Many of you know, Microsoft Paint (MS Paint)  is a drawing tool that can be used for simple drawings and basic image editing. But from Windows 7, Microsoft Paint features "artistic" brushes composed of varying shades of gray, and some degree of transparency that give a more realistic result. this means you can start drawing without buying expensive drawing or painting software. Another benefit is, you don't need to take a lot of time to learn how to use a complicated software. In MS paint, almost zero learning curve.

Why use Microsoft Paint
01:00

Working with a drawing tablet is faster and more efficient than with a mouse. In this tutorial, you need to have a drawing tablet in order to get good result. The No.1 choice no doubt is Wacom series. you can buy from wacom.com or from Amazon.com. You can also buy alternatives tablet if you just start up. My No.1 recommendation is Huion series.

Choose your drawing tablet
01:22

A. Brushes- click the down arrow beneath “Brushes” , choose one of the brush tips.  In this tutorial, the most used brushes are Natural Pencil.

B. Size: We can adjust the size of each brush tip by clicking the “Size” icon. the size will be 4 pixel, 6 pixel , 8 pixel , 10 pixel,  if we choose Natural Pencil.  Hold down Ctrl key and plus key on numpad at the same time will increase the brush size more than 10 pixel. Hold down Ctrl key and minus key on numpad at the same time will decrease the brush size.

C. Side by Side:  When we are drawing, we need to put reference photo on the left side of the screen. Put Microsoft paint on the right side of the screen. So that you can draw while viewing the reference photo.

D. Color 1  and  Color 2 : Please remember, Color 1 is Foreground Color, Color 2 is Background color, so make sure color 1 is selected during your drawing.

E. Color Preset: Before drawing, we can preset some custom colors for us to use. In this tutorial, the reference photo basically is in black and white apart from the dog's left eye. so we first add eight custom colors from white to black. After finished, we need to select it one by one, so these eight color will appear in here.

Graphic Designer, Video Producer, Curriculum Developer

My name's Eric Liu. I am a professional freelance artist, graphic designer, video producer, Senior Curriculum Developer and photographer with over 20+ years experience in advertising, illustration, graphic design, video production and digital publishing. I had studied traditional Chinese painting and calligraphy when I was a kid and benefit from all those skills that I mastered.

I have seen so many people on the internet searching "how to draw a realistic dog step by step?" and "how to use MS paint?", so I develop this course and combine these two questions together in order to help people learn realistic digital drawing from Microsoft's basic drawing software. Although it is lightweight compared to Adobe's Photoshop, but it still has many advantages: Just a regular PC running windows 7, 8 or 10; A drawing tablet from $25-$100 according to the budget. That's enough for anyone to start learning and practicing digital drawing.

Using my method and do some practice, everyone can draw a good picture. For those people who like coloring a book, this is also a good replacement, because it is more creative and fun.
