Course Introduction & Course Benefits - Get Started Reading Music Today!
Learn To Read Music, From Beginner To Intermediate! This course is split into two sections.
In section 1, you’ll learn about pitch, and how to identify notes on both the treble and bass staves – and you’ll learn what those are too!
In section 2, you’ll learn to become a rhythm ninja. Learning rhythms is a bit more complicated than pitch because there are a lot of options. That’s why the bulk of this course will be spent on them. It may be complicated but don’t fret! (especially if you’re a guitar player) We’ll break it down into manageable chunks, so you’ll be able to assimilate the information with ease.

Note Reading
Students will learn to identify musical notes on the treble clef. They will discover how to recognize the notes on the lines and in the spaces of the staff, and how to relate these notes to their corresponding keys on the piano keyboard. This fundamental skill is essential for reading sheet music and understanding basic music theory.
Students will learn about pitch, the highness or lowness of a musical sound. They will discover how pitch is determined by the frequency of sound waves, and how it is notated on the musical staff. This lesson will also cover how different pitches combine to create melodies and harmonies.
Students will learn about steps and accidentals in music. They will discover that a step is the distance between two notes, with a half step being the smallest interval and a whole step being the equivalent of two half steps. Students will also learn about accidentals—symbols such as the sharp (#), flat (♭), and natural (♮)—and how they alter the pitch of a note.
Nice work on Module 1! Let's move on to Module 2.

Students will learn about measures and time signatures in music. They will discover that a measure (or bar) is a segment of time corresponding to a specific number of beats, and is indicated by a vertical bar on the staff. Students will also learn that a time signature is a symbol at the beginning of a piece of music that indicates how many beats are in each measure and which type of note gets one beat.
Students will learn the fundamentals of counting rhythms by understanding the value of different notes. They will discover how to count whole notes, half notes, quarter notes, and eighth notes and how to keep a steady beat. This foundational skill is essential for playing music in time and understanding the relationship between notes and silence.
Here’s some extra rhythms for you to practice!
Students will learn to count and perform eighth notes in a musical piece. They will discover that an eighth note is half the length of a quarter note, and that two eighth notes fit into the space of a single beat. Students will also learn to count them using the phrase "one and, two and," which is a fundamental skill for playing more complex rhythms accurately.

Counting Rhythms III - Syncopation
These syncopated practice rhythms are off. Off beat that is!
Students will learn how to count and perform sixteenth notes in music. They will discover that a sixteenth note is one-quarter the length of a quarter note, and that four of them fit into a single beat. Students will also learn to count them using the phrase "one-e-and-a," which is a fundamental skill for playing more complex rhythms and faster musical passages.
Practice makes perfect. Here’s some more rhythms to wet your whistle with!
Students will learn about dotted rhythms and how a dot affects the value of a note. They will discover that a dot placed after a note increases its duration by half of its original value. For example, a dotted quarter note is equal to a quarter note plus an eighth note. This fundamental skill is essential for playing music with more complex and varied rhythms.
Students will learn how to count and perform triplets, a common musical rhythmic grouping. They will discover that a triplet is a rhythmic figure in which three notes of equal duration are played within the time of two of the same notes. For example, three eighth-note triplets fit into the time of a single quarter note. Students will also learn to count them using the phrase "trip-a-let," which is essential for playing more complex rhythms accurately.
Students will learn about simple and compound meters in music. They will discover that simple meter is a time signature in which the beat can be divided into two equal parts (e.g., 2/4, 3/4, 4/4). In simple meter, the top number of the time signature indicates the number of beats per measure, and the bottom number indicates the note value that receives one beat.
Students will learn to understand and perform in odd meters, also known as irregular meters. They will discover that these time signatures, such as 5/4 or 7/8, are created by grouping beats into combinations of two and three. This skill is essential for performing in a wide range of musical styles, including progressive rock, jazz, and traditional folk music from Eastern Europe and India.
