Section 1: Pre-Launch, Product Validation, and Online Business Fundamentals

How does online business work? I'll show you how the various business models normally share a common structure, and explain the 3 common elements of a successful online business.


It's important that we start with a big list of potential ideas. Don't start with just one favorite idea or you run the risk of falling into the "Launch & Hope" strategy.

We'll start by generating a nice big list of potential product ideas using some simple brainstorming techniques.

It's no use watching the course if you don't follow along! I want to see some brainstorming ideas from you...


It's important that we don't waste any time or money on product ideas with no market. The first filter we'll run our ideas through is Google Trends, which shows us if there are any Google searches for the product, and if search volume is growing or shrinking.

Then we'll use Topsy to do the same with social media, using Twitter mentions to eliminate products that have no social "buzz".


To be successful, we have to make sure that our offer is priced right. This means it needs to be:

a) Competitive with other competing offers online (it can't be way too expensive or nobody will buy) and

b) High enough to allow us to make some profit (we won't survive if we're giving product away to cheap).

What exactly is product validation and why is it so important?


Keywords are EXTREMELY important, they are the words your customers use to search for your products. We'll let Google tell us exactly what they are.


Using Google's Keyword Planner Tool to estimate your market size (based on total search volume), market share (clicks), and optimal CPC (cost-per-click) bids.


The important metrics for your oniine business and how they are calculated.


There are a few situations where surveys can actually be useful. I'll show you how I use a Google survey to pick a name for my new business.


Now for the fun part. I'll show you how to set up your test store (really quickly) using Shopify's free 2-week trial so we can validate our product idea by taking some orders (even if we don't yet have inventory).


Collecting emails is super important. We can offer people a discount code in exchange for their emails, then market to them through email to increase our sales.


To get our first few sales we'll set up an Adwords campaign and make sure we're targeting the right people with the right ads. We'll use a Google coupon code to get $100 in ad traffic for $25.


Google Analytics will allow us to track the people on our site - how they got there, how long they stay, what they do, where they're from, and a whole host of other incredibly valuable data.
