A contra-indication is the presence of a condition which may make the client unsuitable for a treatment. The treatment may not be able to take place, or the treatment may need to be adapted.

When treating a client, if they show signs of any contra-indication, tactfully refer them to their doctor for treatment/advice. Never tell your client what contra- indication they may have even if you are sure, you know what it is. You may be wrong! If you are ever unsure about a contra-indication then do not treat the

client, refer them to their doctor. This way you are always protecting yourself and the client.

CONTRA-INDICATIONS

These are known in the industry as contra-indications and are divided into two groups.

Those that prevent treatment:

Infectious skin conditions such as impetigo

Parasitic infections such as scabies

Eye infections – conjunctivitis

Severe skin conditions – acne, boils, warts

PINK EYE / CONJUNCTIVITIS

Symptoms: inflammation or infection of the eye - redness, itchiness, may have discharge or crusting around the eye. Solution: wait until fully healed, typically 7 days

STYE

Symptoms: a red lump near the edge of the eyelid filled with pus. Solution: wait until fully healed, typically 3 - 5 days

DEMODEX MITES/BLEPHARITIS

Symptoms: Very common. Inflammation of the eyelid - redness, itchiness, greasy, or crusted. Advise client to cleanse thoroughly. Solution: wait until no symptoms remain, typically a few days

Anagen

The anagen phase is also called the growth phase. This is the phase when lashes are actively growing, and it lasts between 30 and 45 days. Only about 40 percent of the upper lashes and 15 percent of the lower lashes are in the anagen phase at any one time. Each lash will grow to a specific length and then stop.

Catagen

The catagen phase is also known as the transition phase. During this phase, the lash stops growing and the hair follicle shrinks. This phase lasts between two and three weeks.

TELOGEN

The telogen phase is also referred to as the resting phase. This phase before the eyelash falls out and a new one begins to grow. Because each individual lash is in its own phase of the growing cycle, it’s normal for a few lashes to fall out most days.
