The Krav Maga principles begin with using natural, instinctive reaction whenever possible. With an instinctive reaction there is really nothing new that a student needs to learn initially, it is simply taking what they will instinctively do and applying it as part of the initial defense. A great example is the instinctive reaction of reaching out for balance or grab hold of something when off balance and/or falling. We don’t think of it, we simply do it as an evolutionary development from walking upright. Now apply this to a defense against choke with a push in which the defender is pushed off balance and will naturally reach up and out in an attempt to stay on their feet. In Krav Maga we use this reaction as the initial reaction for our defense because under stress and without thinking people will make this motion and by making this motion they have put themselves on the first step of the defense, and that without even the need to think about nor analyze the problem. By doing this Krav Maga bridges the gap between a training environment, mechanical practice of each technique for motor memory, and use of a technique under realistic conditions.

Meet the instructor, Joseph Gleed
Joseph Gleed is the Head Instructor at Krav Maga Utah. He is part of a small select group of Krav Maga practitioners in the U.S. that have earned a 2nd degree black belt/expert level in Krav Maga direct from the source in Israel. Joseph earned his black belt through Krav Maga Worldwide under Darren Lavine and his second degree black belt in Israel under the Israeli Martial Arts Committee, instructor certification from Wingate Institute in Israel, his Kru (advanced) level Muay Thai instructor certification under world renowned trainer Grandmaster Toddy, as well as holding other advanced black belts in hybrid systems. He has been devoted to studying martial arts, fighting, and fitness since he began service in the military in 1990, including serving with the famous 101st Airborne. Joseph has taught hundreds of civilians, military, special operations units including SWAT teams, US Army Special Forces, and more, teaching self defense, defensive tactics, weapons defenses, fitness, kickboxing, and MMA.
Joseph is one of a very select group of Krav Maga black belts in the United States and also holds a distinction as a certified Krav Maga Force Trainer, specializing in working with military and police. Joseph was trained and certified a Kru instructor in Muay Thai personally by Grandmaster Toddy, possibly the world's most respected and best Muay Thai trainer. Joseph has also trained with some of the best Krav Maga instructors in the world such as Darren Lavine, John Whitman, John Pascal, Amir Perets, Sam Sade, as well as other top instructors. In addition he has trained and competed in Kickboxing, Jiu Jitsu, and MMA. He is a certified Bas Rutten MMA instructor as well as a Gracie/Brazilian Jiu Jitsu blue belt under 3 time world champ Ricky Lundell and world renowned trainer Professor Pedro Sauer and a blue belt in Four 7 Ju-Jitsu under coach Jason Mertlich.
Joseph brings his years of experience in self defense, fighting, and fitness to each class he teaches and strives to make sure that every student regardless of fitness level or natural ability gets everything they need to “walk in peace.”
