Frequently asked questions
Amazon Kindle Direct Publishing (KDP) is a self-publishing tool. Established in 2007, at the same time as the first Kindle, the digital text platform allows users to upload content to create eBooks. These are then promoted and sold on Amazon's website. In 2016, KDP added a paperback option. Eventually, KDP replaced the organization's original paperback publishing tool, CreateSpace, as the standard. It is now available through one website. Access gets granted to users who have a valid Amazon user ID and password. From there, authors add formatted manuscripts and book covers to be compiled by Amazon. These then get sold as print books on Amazon's website. When a book is purchased, the author splits earnings with the company. The percentage depends on page count and format.
