The iPhone, and smartphones in general, can really produce great quality video. But if you have ever tried filming yourself you will know  there's one big problem - you can't be in front of the high quality rear camera presenting AND behind the camera getting the framing right and adjusting the manual controls at the same time. Many people solve this by using the front facing camera on their phones - but, unless you have an iPhone 7 or later, the quality of this camera is much less that the rear camera. In this lecture we show you how to overcome this problem and record at the highest quality.

We show how this popular video format can be made to look look professional even when you have only got one camera. We show you how to overcome this problem of trying to show two people when you only have one iPhone, and teach you how to create engaging and powerful interviews every time.

To get good results from an iPhone, like any camera, light really is your friend. In this video we'll look at how to get professional quality lighting for next to nothing. We'll show you how you can use natural light to great effect - and if that's not possible in your setup, we'll show you how to get maximum benefit from artificial light, using nothing more than an ordinary desk lamp. By thinking about your lighting you can move your iPhone video production and filmmaking into another league.

Considering it's a visual medium, you might think it's odd that the sound is even more important than the picture. Your audience may tolerate poor video, but not poor sound, and they'll click away. Yet sound is the one element you can easily and cheaply improve. You do not have to rely on the internal microphone on your iPhone or smartphone, that will make your subject sound distant and unintelligible if more than a few feet away. We'll show you how in this video.

iPhone filmmaking or video production relies on light, shadow and color, but when you use these elements cleverly you can make plain backgrounds more interesting, thereby elevating your videos a couple of notches above the average. In this video, we'll show you visual effects created with everyday props that can easily be found around the home.

Editing your video is an important part in the video production process. It is an opportunity to add a little polish to your finished video. But is also a key element in making your story clear and easy to understand, as well as succinct. Your audience has many competing demands on his/her time, so you must keep the length of your video to a minimum. The ideal length is, no longer than it needs to be.

In this lecture we introduce you to three ways of editing your footage, each offering you greater sophistication in your editing.

  1. Top'n'Tailing your clip in Filmic Pro
  2. Basic editing of multiple clips, use of transitions, adding color 'Looks' and music
  3. Full editing in HitFilm Express. A free desktop video editing program for both Mac and Windows.

Tosh Lubek is a multi award winning broadcaster, writer and video production specialist who has worked with radio and TV broadcasters, advertising agencies and direct clients. In a 30+ year career his work includes radio and television advertising, video production and radio programming.

Tosh has also shared his knowledge as a guest lecturer, teaching students at both Aberdeen and Ayr Colleges. In recent years he has worked as a consultant, teaching video production to SMEs seeking to make their own promotional videos easily and affordably.

Tosh works with local and national clients on radio, TV and video production projects. His clients include local government, the National Health Service, Scottish Natural Heritage, Scottish Television, Fife and Ayrshire Chambers of Commerce and numerous advertising agencies.

Tosh started in traditional media but embraced new media as early as 1995 when he created his first website. In 2007 he launched an entertainment channel on Metacafe, then the third largest video sharing site. This allowed him to make videos that attracted millions of views, earning the channel significant revenues from Metacafe’s Producer Rewards program. Further channels followed on YouTube for local video marketing, product review videos and business tips. The revenues this time coming from business clients, Google’s advertising revenue share and affiliate programs.

In 2010 he launched Tosh Lubek Productions, a media production company based in south west Scotland, offering audio and video production services to clients across the UK. His ability to make videos that convert and also make videos quickly has attracted many clients and has been much in demand to make website videos and TV commercials.

The work of Tosh Lubek Productions has helped with the commercial success of many clients. For instance, when Tosh was asked to make videos for Kirbie Engineering Solutions they helped increase sales by almost 200%. A product demo video for a new ladder safety product helped another Scottish client sell most of their initial stock within three weeks of launch. There have also been numerous successful radio commercials. Campaigns for the National Trust for Scotland helped the Trust achieve their “best ever Easter” and doubled visitor numbers at their Haddo House Christmas events.

Industry awards have come Tosh’s way for his work in broadcasting. As writer and producer of a road safety campaign he landed a Gold Sony and Gold, Silver and Bronze medals in the New York Festivals International Advertising Awards. Another advertising campaign for Strathclyde Fire & Rescue and a radio documentary brought further award success in the United Kingdom and the USA.
