to the 5-Day InDesign Mini-Course for Beginners

I’m Lisa, the founder of Pretty Fabulous Designs and your InDesign BFF. The goal for this course is to provide you with easy-to-follow beginner tips and tricks for you to be up and running with InDesign as quickly as possible.

And today, we’ll start with a look at what your options are for purchasing InDesign and the latest updates in the recent 2017 update that recently came out.

Your Buying Options
First, you need an actual copy of Adobe InDesign installed on your computer. And luckily for you, it’s pretty affordable at only $19.99/month. If you think that sounds expensive, consider that it used to cost almost a thousand dollars to purchase a copy of the Adobe Suite and that was only good for a local machine. Or that Quark, InDesign’s main competitor for layout software, is $849. When you think about it, $19.99/month is a pretty good price and in my opinion, worth every penny.

Software Cost Comparison

  • Adobe InDesign $29.99/month but drops to $19.99/month if pre-paid annually
  • Canva Pro Version $12.95/month
  • PicMonkey Royale Version $4.99/month
  • Quark $849 license

Where To Purchase Adobe InDesign

  • Directly from
  • Amazon Digital Services

What’s the difference?
Nothing as far as I can tell. The pricing is exactly the same and you’ll get the same level of support from Adobe Technical Support no matter where you purchase it from.

  • Billing Questions However, should you have an issue with billing, you’ll need to address it with the original purchase vendor.
  • Technical Support For installation issues, you’ll need to contact the original vendor
  • Cancellation Even though Adobe offers a specially reduced price for pre-paying an entire year in advance, they do allow you to cancel and provide a no questions asked pro-rated refund. I’m not sure if Amazon will do the same but have had success in the past with Adobe.

When To Purchase

  • Anytime
  • But Adobe will typically hold a Black Friday sale where you can save up to $10/month off the regular monthly rate or more. I was able to purchase the entire Creative Cloud for only $29.99/month instead of their regular $49.99/month price because I purchased during Black Friday.

Which version to purchase

Start with the free 30-Day Trial available from either and then prepay for the annual price directly from Adobe since you will be able to get a pro-rated refund later should you change your mind.

What is Creative Cloud?
Creative Cloud, frequently referred to as CC, includes InDesign and many other graphic design software applications including:

  • InDesign
  • Photoshop
  • Photoshop Lightroom
  • Illustrator
  • Premiere Pro
  • Muse
  • Acrobat Pro
  • After Effects
  • Audition
  • Digital Publishing Suite
  • Dreamweaver
  • Edge Animate
  • Edge Code preview
  • Edge Inspect
  • Edge Reflow preview
  • Edge Web fonts
  • Extension Manager
  • ExtendScript Toolkit
  • Fireworks
  • Flash Builder Premium Edition
  • Flash Professional
  • Media Encoder
  • Prelude
  • Scout
  • SpeedGrade

Yes, there are many great applications here. In fact, more than you will probably ever use. If you’re thinking that learning one will make it easy to use the other ones, that is true to some extent but it is nothing as easy as learning the Microsoft suite of applications: Word, Excel, Powerpoint, Outlook. In Adobe, although some menu options are the same, each application comes with its own steep learning curve.

As a Blogger, I only use the following applications

  • Photoshop for graphics creation and photo editing
  • Premiere Pro for all video editing
  • Media Encoder for converting video files from Premiere Pro to
  • InDesign for e-books, planners and other printables
  • Acrobat Pro for creating editable PDF documents
  • Illustrator for logos, vectors and shapes

Should You Purchase InDesign By Itself Or The Entire Creative Cloud?

It took me at least a year to become proficient in the small list of applications I use above, which is less than half of the products available. However, I do use the ones listed above on a regular basis and it is more cost-effective to purchase them via CC and not individual products.

If you’re just starting out with Adobe, then simply purchase one tool and see if you like it and how easily you can master that before moving onto another. They do all complement each other and make it easier to use the entire CC suite.
