There are many things that get in the way of active listening (and learning). It's important to be aware of these barriers, many of which are just bad habits, in order to become a more effective listener. Barriers and bad habits to effective listening can include:

  1. Trying to listen to more than one conversation at a time. This includes having the television or radio on while attempting to listen to somebody talk; being on the phone to one person and talking to another person in the same room and also being distracted by some dominant noise in the immediate environment.
  2. You find the communicator attractive/unattractive. You pay more attention to how you feel about the communicator and their physical appearance than to what they are saying. Perhaps you simply don't like the speaker (or what the speaker is saying) so you end up mentally arguing with the speaker and become fast to criticise and reject what they're saying.
  3. You are not interested in the topic/issue being discussed and therefore become bored too soon.
  4. Not focusing and being easily distracted by other external factors, fiddling with your hair, the weather, fingers, traffic, gazing out of the window or focusing on objects other than the speaker.
  5. You are prejudiced or biased by race, gender, age, religion, accent, and/or past experiences.
  6. You have preconceived ideas or bias. Effective listening includes being open-minded to the ideas and opinions of others, this does not mean you have to agree but should listen and attempt to understand.
  7. You make judgements, thinking, for example that  a person is not very bright or is under-qualified so there is no point listening to what they have to say.
  8. Previous experiences. We are all influenced by previous experiences in life.  We respond to people based on personal appearances, how initial introductions or welcomes were received and/or previous interpersonal encounters.  If we stereotype a person we become less objective and therefore less likely to listen effectively.
  9. Preoccupation. When we have a lot on our minds we can fail to listen to what is being said as we're too busy concentrating on what we're thinking about. This is particularly true when we feel stressed or worried about issues.
  10. Having a Closed Mind. We all have ideals and values that we believe to be correct and it can be difficult to listen to the views of others that contradict our own opinions. The key to effective listening (and interpersonal skills) is adapting the ability to maintain an open mind, in view of understand why others think about things differently to you and use this information to gain a better understanding of the speaker.


We can easily pick up bad habits when it comes to listening. Listening is a key interpersonal skill and a prerequisite to many other communication skills, therefore, by learning to listen more effectively you can improve the quality of both your professional and personal life - especially if you go on to practice hypnotherapy with others into the future.

Gerald Egan: Factors that Impede Listening and Learning

Many people, when they think about trance & hypnosis, think of it as going to a sleep, relaxed, mindful place. This is certainly one form of trance - a down-time style of trance - but there, in fact, are many different types. We like to think of that there are down-time trances and up-time trances. 

Down-time trances are where we use hypnosis from a more relaxed, meditative like place. Up-time trances are where hypnosis is used from  a more high energy place. For the later - as this form is generally less well known - think of the Personal development guru Tony Robbins. He rarely says he is using hypnosis but he is, in fact, a masterful hypnotist. Only he uses a much more conversational style up-time, high energy form of trance.

Throughout the training you will notice that Kain & Steve have different styles. Steve tends to make use of the more down-time trance experience while Kain uses much more conversational style up-time trances. 

As this is very early in the program, if this doesn't mean much to you then don't worry! As you progress the distinctions will become clearer.

The million dollar question: Just what is hypnosis?

Aligning conscious and unconscious resources...

In hypnosis we say that we have a conscious mind and an unconscious mind. In reality these work more as 'layers' of the mind rather than 'actual things'.

Your conscious mind is the part of your mind that likes to analyse, critique and break down. Your unconscious is the part that is creative, imaginative, connected with feelings, and appreciates experience as whole rather than something that has to broken down and analysed. 

You can think of these distinctions through the metaphor of the ice berg. At the tip is your conscious whereas everything else underneath is your unconscious.

The Conscious V's the Unconscious Mind

Self Awareness is having a clear perception of your personality, including strengths, weaknesses, thoughts, beliefs, motivation, and emotions. Self Awareness allows you to understand other people, how they perceive you, your attitude and your responses to them in the moment.

We might quickly assume that we are self aware, but it is helpful to have a relative scale for awareness. If you have ever been in an auto accident you may have experienced everything happening in slow motion and noticed details of your thought process and the event.

This is a state of heightened awareness. With practice we can learn to engage these types of heightened states and see new opportunities for interpretations in our thoughts, emotions, and conversations. Having awareness creates the opportunity to make changes in behaviour and beliefs. 

Why Develop Self Awareness? As you develop self awareness you are able to make changes in the thoughts and interpretations you make in your mind. Changing the interpretations in your mind allows you to change your emotions. Self awareness is one of the attributes of Emotional Intelligence and an important factor in achieving success. 

Self awareness is the first step in creating what you want and mastering your life. Where you focus your attention, your emotions, reactions, personality and behavior determine where you go in life. Having self awareness allows you to see where your thoughts and emotions are taking you. It also allows you to take control of your emotions, behaviour, and personality so you can make changes you want.

Until you are aware in the moment of your thoughts, emotions, words, and behaviour, you will have difficulty making changes in the direction of your life. Having a clear understanding of your thought and, behaviour patterns helps you understand other people. This ability to empathise facilitates better personal and professional relationships.

Becoming More Aware of Your Responses

Hypnosis can feel like a strange, altered experience bit it is, actually, a natural one...

Some of the things you can do with hypnosis is incredible. And it an sometimes feel like a strange yet profoundly enjoyable place to be. Even though this is so, that doesn't mean it's un-natural. Trance logic: the beauty of fully engaging in your imagination...

Trance logic is the term we use to describe the phenomena of starting to consider something to be true that previously we wouldn't have considered to be true. 

When we dream at night we do this. We've all had a dream that, at the time, even though it was rather absurd, felt so real that we believed - at some level - it be true. This is an extreme example of trance logic.

Even though hypnosis is not the same as falling asleep, we still experience milder forms of trance logic in trance; where we engage our imagination, while in a suggestible state, to the extent where we start to act 'as if' it's real; where we start to buy into an idea that we perhaps didn't think was true, or possible previously.

Trance logic is one of the vehicles we use within hypnosis to create change. Just imagine you could get a real sense of life without your issues and problems? What do you think could be on the other side? Trance logic is the vehicle that makes it possible to consider this.

Imagination is the ability to form a mental image of something that is not perceived through the five senses. It is the ability of the mind to build mental scenes, objects or events that do not exist, are not present, or have happened in the past.

Everyone possesses a certain degree of imagination ability. The imagination manifests in various degrees in various people. In some, it is highly developed, and in others, it manifests in a weaker form.

Imagination makes it possible to experience a whole world inside the mind. It gives the ability to look at any situation from a different point of view, and to mentally explore the past and the future.

This ability manifests in various forms, one of which is daydreaming. Though too much idle daydreaming may make one impractical, a certain degree daydreaming, while not being engaged in something that requires attention, provides temporary happiness, calmness and relief from stress.

In your imagination, you can travel anywhere in the speed of light, without any obstacles. It can make you feel free, though temporarily, and only in the mind, from tasks, difficulties and unpleasant circumstances.

Imagination is not limited only to seeing pictures in the mind. It includes all the five senses and the feelings. One can imagine a sound, taste, smell, a physical sensation or a feeling or emotion. For some people it is easier to see mental pictures, others find it easier to imagine a feeling, and some are more comfortable imagining the sensation of one of the five senses. Training of the imagination gives the ability to combine all the senses.

A developed and strong imagination does not make you a daydreamer and impractical. On the contrary, it strengthens your creative abilities, and is a great tool for recreating and remodeling your world and life.

By now, you will understand how the word "hypnosis" comes from the Greek word for sleep, Hypnos. The hypnosis you will be learning in this course is not the sleep you sleep at night. Hypnosis looks like sleep from the outside; the subjective experience is often one of heightened awareness.

Only a small percentage of people who practice hypnosis report having no conscious memory of the experience after it is complete. More common are the individual’s statement of feelings of well-being after the session.

Why induce trance? What's the point of it anyway? 

There are actually more resigns than you think. Here's a very brief breakdown of the main reasons that Steve will be exploring in this video:

  1. Absorption: One of the key aspects of a trance induction is to create a state of absorption; to reduce the attention from the many down to a single element of experience.
  2. Imagination: A second purpose is to encourage the use of the imagination. Imagination is the vehicle we use access respires, creativity and new choices. 
  3. Responsiveness: A third is responsiveness. You are looking to create an environment where the person is responding well to you, both consciously and unconsciously. Ideally you are looking to promote and maximise unconscious - automatic - responding, while minimising conscious responding.

All three of the above, individually, create suggestibility; the likes of which can be used to encourage and help create change. When you combine all three you end up with a very potent mix that can be used to create profound altered states that can lead to positive change.

Why Would We Want to Induce Trance?

The scale of trance...

While everyone can be hypnotised, different people respond in different ways to it. Some people find it incredibly easy to go into trance and experience enjoyable and profound altered states; other people find it a  little bit more difficult; and, of course, there are many shades of grey in between. 

Irrespective of how well you go into trance, at this time, you can get something from it. And you can continually improve your ability as a trance subject over time. So for just now consider the following:

  • How skilled are you at coming absorbed? Do you do it easily, or is it something you find difficult?
  • How much do you use your imagination?
  • How comfortable are you allowing yourself to respond instead of always being in fully conscious control?

Answering these questions will give you a basic gauge for how good a trance subject you currently are. The good things is though, no matter where you are you can always improve; and improve dramatically!

The more you practice the three things outlined above, the better and more skilled you will become at hypnotic trance. And, the more profoundly useful altered states you will be able to create.

What Makes a Good Trance Subject?

No-one is Broken. Therefore No-one Needs to 'Be Fixed.'

Your unconscious mind has vast computing power compared with your conscious mind. Also, it reasons through emotion where your conscious mind reasons through logic. And your unconscious is blissfully unaware of time while your conscious mind is sensitive to it. Taken together, your unconscious mind has a very different view of cause and effect.

Given the very different strengths each exhibit, it's natural for the conscious and the unconscious to be on different pages about a particular issue. And since your conscious mind strives to protect your unconscious mind based on its logical reasoning, emotional notions that would help the unconscious mind make a change get shielded out.

So, instead of thinking you are deficient in some way, hypnosis assumes you have the resources you need to make a positive change. It's simply a matter of engaging the unconscious mind while the conscious "takes a break" for a little while.

Hypnosis was never intended to be a 'mystical art', but more of a practical aid which has stemmed from the ancient forefathers of philosophy.

Encouragement is a crucially important relationship principle.

The Greek word for encourage (exhort), parakaleo means to call someone along side. The noun parakletos is translated ‘comforter’, ‘counsellor’ and ‘advocate’. The noun paraklesis is translated ‘comfort’, ‘encouragement’.

In life, we all need encouragement at times. We cannot live life successfully and efficiently on our own. While common culture actively promotes independence, all those who have experienced genuine interdependent unity know that the otherwise is true.

How do we encourage each other? It can be by example. It can be by our physical presence or our practical help. But it is mostly of the things we say. Our words have the power to either destroy or to build, to pull down or to lift up, to cause fear and guilt or to bring peace and joy, to generate doubt or create trust.

You don't want to just throw a person into trance the second you meet them; they need to be prepared and introduced to the process to avoid pushback or abreaction. To achieve this you do the pre-talk. One example of the pre-talk is the following:

The Power of Convincers...

Hypnotic testing can be tremendously powerful! And, it's something that many hypnotists don't even do.

Hypnotic testing has two many purposes:

  1. To test for responsiveness: As we've said previously, 'responsiveness' is one of the main goals of a trance induction. By performing some kind of test you can see how the person is responding to you.
  2. To act as a convincer - or a series of convincers - which then increases responsiveness: Every time we have some kind of dramatic experience, it impacts us; it convinces us that something different is occurring.


By creating little experiences of altered states for the person and then drawing their attention to them, you increase their own level of conviction in the power of their mind. This significantly increases suggestibility and lead to increased responsiveness. 

When you watch the demonstrations soon, you will see lots of examples of hypnotic testing - and convincers - in action.

Active listening is not just about taking information in and processing it. It is also about our physical demeanour and body language.

The late Gerard Egan devised five key component of active listening, known by the acronym SOLER:

  • Sit straight: (this is important in conveying the message I am here with you.’)
  • Open posture: (indicates an openness to listening to whatever the speaker has to share)
  • Lean forward: (indicating an interest in the speaker's words)
  • Eye contact: (another way of expressing interest and reassurance)
  • Relax: (a relaxed posture puts the speaker at ease).

By remembering SOLER, you can adopt an active listening approach with friends, family, and colleagues. Try it next time you are in a conversation.

The Egan Non-Verbal Communications Model

John Grinder (the co-developer of NLP) once claimed that he’d identified three significant barriers that stand to potentially block the mastery of any skill:

  1. Over-reliance on focal vision
  2. Internal dialogue
  3. A feeling of hesitation.

This particularly applies when it comes to learning NLP, which relies heavily on your ability (and willingness) to perceive a much wider view of things and respond more instinctively to people. By finding ways to eliminate these obstacles, you can start to increase your abilities.

Personally, I have discovered that one of the quickest and most surefire ways to get results fast, is by looking at life, situations and circumstances with peripheral vision.


Training Soldiers: Having spent almost ten years in the British Army, I learned a lot about looking at life with peripheral vision. My training Corporal once shared with the most efficient way to see in the dark. He told me to stop looking and start seeing.

One of the things he said was that to see more; I needed to relax my eyes, stop straining in the darkness and just 'feel for movements'. To do this well, It was crucial that I watched with my ears and listened with my eyes, with no internal dialogue running through my mind.

Upon practising this state of complete awareness, I began to notice how much my senses picked up on everything and how completely alert I became. I discovered that day how it was possible to notice everything, see everything and pay enormous attention to detail.


The Conscious Un-focus: Our focal vision is what we use when reading words (like what you are doing right now). It's a small and central element of your visual field that is purposefully useful for distinguishing the finer details of things. Most people have a high degree of reliance on their focal vision (which you can think of as being connected to the conscious mind.)

Peripheral vision, on the other hand, opens up to either side of you, above you and even beneath you. Among other things, peripheral vision is useful for detecting sudden movement (which is more evident in the dark). You might think of this as being fully connected to your unconscious mind, being fully present, fully aware and fully alert.


Practising Your Peripheral: Focus on the number 99 at the start of this sentence. As you continue to focus on the number, start relaxing your gaze, and let yourself become aware of the edges of the page (or computer screen) before you allow your awareness to move further out to each side.

See how much you can perceive outside of what you're now looking at.... This is your peripheral vision!

When you use peripheral vision while in the context of a one on one situation (or conversation), you will notice more about the person, such as their breathing rate, body gestures and even their blink rate. Seeing these things can be phenomenally useful if you genuinely want to connect with another person through developing rapport.

Once you've built up a rapport with someone, you'll start to gain more intuitions about the other person and what’s going on inside of them.


Peripheral Vision Exercise: In a low-risk situation, go into a state of peripheral vision while in conversation with someone else and pay specific attention to what you become aware of, that you weren’t previously aware of.

As you become more comfortable going in and our of peripheral vision in various situations, you will start to amaze yourself by what you are noticing that you didn’t previously.

It's important to note, that building up your ability to go in and out of peripheral vision is similar to building up your muscles down at the gym. The more you practice, the better you become at it!


More Advanced Thinking: If you work with groups of people, peripheral vision will allow you to notice what’s going on for all the people who you aren't directly looking at.

This means that you can be looking at one person while being acutely aware of the signals, gestures and expressions being made by the other individuals in the room who think that you can’t see them.

Wouldn't this be a useful skill to develop? This is the power of exercising your peripheral vision!

The Power of going in and out...

Fractionation is another deepener that you can use to increase the intensity of the trance experience. It is when you take a person into an experience...then briefly take them out...then back into the same experience...then back out...then back into the experience again. And each time they go back in they go into it a little bit deeper than before.

Fractionation works on the principle that our brain works well when it is primed. When we first go into an experience we generally only go into it to a certain depth. However, the next time we go into it, because we have been primed, we will tend to go in just that bit deeper than before. 

By deliberately fractionating - taking a person in and out of trance - you can create a deep and profound trance quickly and easily.

Trust is a critical issue in hypnosis.  Taking the time to cultivate a stable relationship with a hypnotist based on mutual understanding, trust and confidence are worth its weight in gold. Trance is, after all, not a binary state.  You’re not either in or out of trance – it’s not that black and white. There are levels and gradients.

Deeper and more profound hypnotic states can (and should) only be accessed by working with a hypnotist who you have built a rapport with and sense of trust. To be able to surrender yourself that completely, to let go that deeply… that takes confidence!

Think of it like the exercise where you are asked to fall backwards and allow someone to catch you. The experience would be very different if you were expecting a stranger to catch you than if it were someone you implicitly trusted, wouldn’t it?

You want to know that the person guiding you has your best interests at heart, that you’re working toward a common goal and that they are there to help and support you if you run into anything untoward.

Being able to trust the person hypnotising you, knowing that they won’t lead you astray or attempt to lead you into territory that you are unfamiliar with – that counts for a lot. So, how do you build trust? It takes time! And remember, in the way you're assessing whether you can trust Kain and Steve, your future clients will evaluate and assess you in exactly the same way!

Winning Trust: The Purpose of Verbal Communications

Although initial conversations can help us to relax, most rapport-building happens without words and through non-verbal communication channels.

We create and maintain rapport subconsciously through matching non-verbal signals, including body positioning, body movements, eye contact, facial expressions and tone of voice with the other person.

Watch two friends talking when you get the opportunity and see how they subconsciously mimic each other’s non-verbal communication. We create rapport instinctively; it is our natural defence from conflict, which most of us will try hard to avoid most of the time.

It is important that appropriate body language is used; we read and instantly believe what body language tells us, whereas we may take more persuading with oral communication. If there is a mismatch between what we are saying verbally and what our body language is saying, then the person we are communicating with will believe the body language. Building rapport, therefore, begins with displaying appropriate body language - being welcoming, relaxed and open.

As well as paying attention to and matching body language with the person we are communicating with; it helps if we can also match their words. Reflecting back and clarifying what has been said are useful tactics for repeating what has been shared by the other person. Not only will it confirm that you are listening but also give you the opportunity to use the words and phrases of the other person, further emphasising similarity and common ground.

The way we use our voice is also important in developing rapport.  When we are nervous or tense we tend to talk more quickly, this, in turn, can make you sound tensed and stressed.

We can vary our voices, pitch, volume and pace in ways to make what we are saying more interesting but also to come across as more relaxed, open and friendly. Try lowering your tone, talk slower and gently, this can often help you develop rapport with greater ease.

The Main Differences Between Hearing and Listening

The following points are vital so far as the difference between hearing and listening is concerned

  1. An individual’s ability to perceive sounds, by receiving vibrations through ears, is called hearing. Listening is something done consciously that involve the analysis and understanding of the sounds you hear.
  2. Hearing is primary and continuous in nature, i.e. the first and foremost stage is hearing, followed by listening and it occurs continuously. On the other hand, listening is temporary, as we cannot consistently pay attention to something for long hours.
  3. Hearing is physiological, which is through one of our senses in the living organisms. On the contrary, hearing is a psychological (and very conscious) act.
  4. While hearing is a passive bodily process that does not the involve use of the brain. As opposed to listening, it is an active mental process, which includes the use of brain to draw meaning from words and sentences.
  5. Hearing involves receipt of the message through ears. Conversely, listening encompasses interpretation of the message received by ears.
  6. Hearing is an innate ability, but listening is a learned skill.
  7. When hearing, we are not aware of the sounds that we receive, however in the case of listening; we are completely aware of what the speaker is saying.
  8. Hearing involves the use of only one sense i.e. ears. In contrast, listening includes the use of more than one senses i.e. eyes, ears, touch, etc. to understand the message completely and accurately.
  9. In hearing, we are neither aware, nor do we have control over what we hear. On the other hand, in listening, we are aware of what the other person is saying, and so we listen to acquire knowledge and receive information that we are naturally interested in.
  10. Hearing does not require focus whereas listening does.

If we want to sharpen our ability to understand others, it's crucial that we learn to listen more attentively because believe it or not, there are five types of listening:

1) Ignoring: When we're not listening at all.

2) Pretending: When we're trying to show someone that we're interested, but we aren't!

3) Selective listening: When we only hear what we expect to hear.

4) Attentive listening: When we pay close attention to what someone is saying to us.

5) Empathic listening: When we focus on listening to what someone else is trying to say to us.

Empathic listening isn't about agreeing with another or showing sympathy. Empathy is more about understanding the core message that someone is trying to convey. The best way to listen is empathically.

For example, any good salesperson will know the needs of his customer base. He'll assess his product range to decide how they will best serve the needs of his clients. He wants to know if he can offer a practical solution to his client's needs and preferences.

Understanding people is of fundamental importance if we want to connect with those that we know in a more meaningful way than what we have done in the past.

Mature communicators aren't afraid of being told the truth. In fact, they love the truth! Mature communicators also are not scared to show the other person what is happening inside them, or hear what is going on inside of someone else.

So, in your communications and interactions with other people, pursue understanding before all other things. They will even respect you for it!

Developing Effective Listening Skills

Hypnotic language can actually be very straightforward. By definition, hypnotic language is designed to produce a hypnotic trance. Since trance is simply a highly focused state of attention, hypnotic language is language which focuses the attention and turns it inwards.

Interest in hypnotic language patterns has grown alongside interest in the work of Milton H. Erickson, who pioneered the "indirect" approach to hypnosis. Before Erickson, subjects were told what to do - "you are feeling sleepy".  While this works for some people, Erickson realised that the majority of us dislike being told what to do, and will tend to resist any suggestions that are made to us in this way. 

The main reason why we would ever want to use hypnotic language would simply be to influence the emotional state of another person - so that we can win their trust and gain their attention before conducting change work.

Why Use Hypnotic Language?

However good you think your listening skills are, the only person who can tell you if you have understood correctly or not is the speaker. Therefore, as an extension of good listening skills, you need to develop the ability to reflect words and feelings and to clarify that you have understood them correctly.  

It is often important that you and the speaker agree that what you understand is a true representation of what was meant to be said.

As well as understanding and reflecting the verbal messages of the speaker it is important to try to understand the emotions. In this video, Kain explains how to use reflection effectively to help you build greater understanding of not only what is being said but the content, feeling and meaning of other peoples messages.

Reflecting is the process of paraphrasing and restating both the feelings and words of the speaker.  The purposes of reflecting are:

  • To allow the speaker to 'hear' their own thoughts and to focus on what they say and feel.
  • To show the speaker that you are trying to perceive the world as they see it and that you are doing your best to understand their messages.
  • To encourage them to continue talking.

Reflecting does not involve you asking questions, introducing a new topic or leading the conversation in another direction. Speakers are helped through reflecting as it not only allows them to feel understood, but it also gives them the opportunity to focus their ideas.

This in turn helps them to direct their thoughts and further encourages them to continue speaking.

Communication Skills: Reflecting Back

In communications, clarification involves offering back to the speaker the essential meaning, as understood by the listener, of what they have just said. Thereby checking that the listener's understanding is correct and resolving any areas of confusion or misunderstanding.

Clarification is necessary in the context of many social or therapeutic situations, especially when what is being communicated is difficult in some way. Communication can be 'difficult' for many reasons, perhaps raw emotions are being discussed - or you are listening to some complicated information or following instructions.

Clarifying can involve asking questions or occasionally summarising what the speaker has said.

A listener can ask for clarification when they cannot make sense of the speaker's responses. Sometimes, the messages that a speaker is attempting to send can be highly complex, involving many different people, issues, places and times. Clarifying helps you to sort these out and also to check the speaker's priorities.

Through clarification, it is possible for the speaker and the listener to make sense of these often confused and complex issues. Clarifying involves genuineness on the listener's part and it shows speakers that the listener is interested in them and in what they have to say.

Carl Rogers (1902-1987) was a humanistic psychologist who agreed with the main assumptions of Abraham Maslow. He added that for a person to "grow", they need an environment that provides them with genuineness (openness and self-disclosure), acceptance (being seen with unconditional positive regard), and empathy (being listened to and understood).

Without these, relationships and healthy personalities will not develop as they should, much like a tree will not grow without sunlight and water.

Rogers believed that every person could achieve their goals, wishes and desires in life. When, or rather if they did so, self-actualization took place. This was one of Carl Rogers most significant contributions to psychology, and for a person to reach their potential, a number of factors must be satisfied.

Rogers believed feelings of self-worth develop in early childhood and are formed through the interactions between a child and its parents. As a child grows older, interactions with significant others will affect their feelings of self-worth.

Rogers believed that we need to be regarded positively by others; we need to feel valued, respected, treated with affection and loved. Positive regard is to do with how other people evaluate and judge us in social interaction. Rogers made a distinction between unconditional positive regard and conditional positive regard.

Unconditional positive regard is where parents, significant others unconditionally accepts the person for who he or she is. Positive regard is not withdrawn if the individual does something wrong or makes a mistake. 

The consequences of unconditional positive regard are that the person feels free to try things out and make mistakes, even though this may lead to getting it worse at times.  People who are able to self-actualize are more likely to have received unconditional positive regard from others, especially their parents in childhood.

At the extreme, a person who constantly seeks approval from other people is likely only to have experienced conditional positive regard as a child.

In hypnotherapy, it's crucial that we are unconditionally accepting of people, their stories, their behaviours, attitudes and beliefs. Anything other than this will belittle the trust in the context of the relationship.

Abraham Maslow suggested that psychotherapy has always existed in one form or another. These forms of healing have historically included religion, shamanism, hypnotherapy, or the physician within local communities.

Common to all of these, Maslow claimed, is the ability someone has to help other people to help themselves. He outlined what he believed to be the therapeutic characteristics of such relationships.

First proposed by Chris Argyris, way back in 1970, the ladder of inference is a way of describing how you move from a piece of information (a comment made to you, or something that you have observed to happen), through a series of mental processes to a conclusion.

The Ladder of Inference helps you draw better conclusions, or challenge other people's conclusions based on true facts and reality.

Your voice can reveal as much about your personal history as your appearance.  

The sound of a voice and the content of speech can provide clues to an individual's emotional state and a dialect can indicate their geographic roots. The voice is unique to the person to whom it belongs.

For instance, if self-esteem is low, it may be reflected by hesitancy in the voice, a shy person may have a quiet voice, but someone who is confident in themselves will be more likely to have command of their voice and clarity of speech.

It was Albert Mehrabian who came up with the rule determining that successful communication is made up of three parts: the words you use, your tone of voice and your body language.

Communicating passionately, quietly or angrily can completely impact how people interpret you, so it goes without saying that the tone of our voice when talking hypnotically will hugely impact how effective we are at connecting with others.

The Art of Effective Speaking (Tonality)

The terms empathy and sympathy are often confused with good reason. Both of the words deal with the relationship one has to the feelings and experiences of another. Today we explore the differences between these terms and how they are most commonly used.

Both sympathy and empathy have roots in the Greek term páthos meaning “suffering, feeling.” The prefix sym- comes from the Greek sýn meaning “with, together with” and the prefix em- derives from the Greek en- meaning “within, in.”

Sympathy is the older of the two terms. It entered English in the mid-1500s with a very broad meaning of “agreement or harmony in qualities between things or people.” Since then, the term has come to be used in a more specific way.

Nowadays sympathy is widely used to convey commiseration, pity, or feelings of sorrow for someone who is experiencing misfortune. This common sense is epitomised in the category of greeting card most often labelled “sympathy” that specialises in messages of support and sorrow for those in a time of need.

Consider the following examples:

“There was little sympathy in England for David Beckham … when he received a red card in a 1998 World Cup loss to Argentina.” –New York Times,  July 2, 2015

“…the new [Facebook] feature would automatically replace the existing ‘like’ button with a ‘sympathize’ one when users tag their statuses with a negative emotion, like ‘sad’ or ‘depressed.’” –New York, December 6, 2013

Empathy entered English a few centuries after sympathy—in the late 1800s—with a somewhat technical and now obsolete meaning from the field of psychology, which referred to the physiological manifestation of feelings. Unlike sympathy, empathy has come to be used in a more broad way than it was when it was first introduced. The term is now most often used to refer to the capacity or ability to imagine oneself in the situation of another, thereby vicariously experiencing the emotions, ideas, or opinions of that person.

Consider the following examples:

  1. “…many of us believe that if more lives are at stake, we will — and should — feel more empathy (i.e., vicariously share others’ experiences) and do more to help.” – New York Times, July 10, 2015
  2. “I think that’s almost what it is sometimes if you sum up what acting is. It’s just the ultimate expression of empathy.” – Emily Blunt, Los Angeles Times, December 8, 2014

To sum up the differences between the most commonly used meanings of these two terms: sympathy is feeling compassion, sorrow, or pity for the hardships that another person encounters, while empathy is putting yourself in the shoes of another.

The term transference originates from Psychodynamic Therapy where it is defined as a client’s unconscious conflicts that can cause problems in everyday life. It is where the individual transfers feelings and attitudes from a person or situation in the past on to an individual or situation in the present and where the process is likely to be, at least to some degree, inappropriate to the present.

Although the concept is originally a therapeutic one, it is also used to understand what can happen in any relationship whether personal or professional such as that experienced in the coaching (or therapeutic) relationship.

These are two hugely important phenomena to watch out for when practising hypnotherapy on other people, from two perspectives; from them unto you, and also from you unto them.

Pacing and Leading: creating a verbal dance...

Often when people attempt to lead the think about it from the perspective of introducing a new idea or concept to the person they are attempting to lead. This can certainly work but it is far more elegant and seamless if you 'pace' first before leading.

Pacing and leading is where you match a person's on-going experience and then extend it in some way. When you pace and then lead your suggestions become more readily acceptable; because rather than being an entirely new suggestion they simply become an extension to what they are already experiencing.

Verbal pacing and leading is like leading a dance: you turn your attention outwards, observe the things a person says, match them and then lead them some place else.

To pace and lead a person verbally, you do so through the use of truisms. Here are some forms of truisms:

  1. Sensory based truisms: Anything that can be verified by the senses.
  2. Situational based truisms: Specific things the person says that can be parrot phrased back.
  3. Ambiguity: Being so incredibly vague and ambiguous that it has to be a truism because everyone can relate to it - this is what many politicians do.

The Causal art of linking ideas together...

It's one thing to say your truisms one after the other, but it's another to make them sound elegant, flowing and bound together in a powerful package. The way to do this is through causal linkage.

There are different types of causal linkage. Here is a quick overview of these:

  • Simple linkage: Using the word 'and'.
  • Medium linkage: Using words like 'while', 'as', during.
  • Strong linkage: Using words and phrases like 'cause', 'makes', 'because', 'and that means', the more the more'

Causal linkages are hypnotic words that imply a cause effect relationship between something that is happening and something the communicator wants to happen. They are used not only by hypnotherapists, but advertisers and salespeople.

The special, magic words that open doors...

There are certain words and phrases that affect our experience in interesting and profound ways; words that can engage the imagination, change minds, and capture & lead a person's experience. We like to call these 'special words and phrases'. Take a look below for some of these to get you started:

  1. As if/it's almost as if/imagine what it would be like: These three phrases can be tremendously powerful. Often if we are being too analytical then we have to bypass the critical, cognitive faculty of the mind and start to re-connect more with our creativity. These phrases can help you do that. By using them they take away critical resistance points and open up the 'imagination box'..."just imagine what it would be like if you could go into trance and make some profound changes"
  2. Allow: This is truly magical word that can be used to great effect in hypnosis. When we 'allow' something to happen it is a very different experience than 'doing' it. When we 'do' something it generally involves mostly conscious effort; when we simply 'allow' something to happen we do it more automatically, more unconsciously. The word allow promotes unconscious responsiveness. Which is, of course, one of the main goals of a trance induction.
  3. Universals: these are words like, 'all', 'every', 'entire', 'fully', 'completely'. Universal words like these can help take lot's of individual experiences and collapse them into one whole. And, of course, our definition of hypnosis is where we reduce our attention from the many down to a single, whole element of experience, so these universals can assist with the trance development. They can also be used to pull together changes and generalise them into one change: E.G. Now it's time to take all of these insights and look towards the future...and notice how your entire experience of this situation has now shifted.

The most powerful of all language patterns...

Presuppositions are thought to be the most powerful of all language patterns.

A presuppositions is whatever must be assumed in order accept and understand a sentence or phrase. For example if someone was to ask you the following question:

"What are three of the most enjoyable activities in your life?"

In order to answer the question, you have to accept the idea that there are several things - more than 3 -in your life that you enjoy. The idea has slipped in, outside of conscious awareness, and you are starting to respond to it.

One of the keys to presuppositions is to have a think about what idea or direction you want to intrigues a person to. Then craft your communication in such a way that this idea/direction is presupposed.

How to pre-load your suggestions and altered states of reality...

Rather than thrown someone into a hypnotic experience you can pre-load it, creating an expectation that can increase response potential; making their experiences more dramatic.

One way to do this is through 'Pre-loading'. Here is a quick overview of the pre-loading process:

  1. Create anticipation: Using the phrase, 'In a moment but not yet, I'm going to ask you to do X'
  2. Pre-load an association: Then let them know what will happen when you do 'X'. E.G. 'And when I do, you're going to find yourself feeling twice as relaxed that you are right now'.
  3. Create a bind: A bind is where you link together two or more things that become interdependent on each other. I.E As one happens it causes the other to also happen. One way to introduce a bind is through the phrase, 'only at the rate of speed that'. E.G 'Your going to find yourself feeling twice as relaxed....only at the rate of speed as you drift back fully and completely into a past pleasant memory'.
  4. Direct instruction: Now that you've set up the hypnotic reality/suggestion, just go ahead and ask them to do it.

From Therapy to Change-work...

While they might end up being similar things it can be useful to make a distinction between therapy and change-work. 

Generally, when people think about therapy it brings up associations of Sigmund Freud, lying on a therapist's couch trudging through their childhood with a box of tissues close at hand. The term therapy also suggests that change is extremely difficult, takes a long time and that you must go through excessive amounts of pain to get any kind of result.

When you 'frame' the intervention more as 'change-work' though, it creates a different complexion; because we are, in effect changing and developing all the time. Calling your interventions 'change-work' instead of 'therapy' can release the client from any strange association they may have about the therapeutic process and promote more of an atmosphere of development.

Even if you advertise as a therapist, it's useful to make the distinction between the two during your pre-talk.

We all change in many different ways...

When we change there are different layers to the change. Often we are not consciously aware of these layers but, as a change-maker, it is important to know about them to track the changes. 

In general there are two main areas you are looking o make changes in. These are the following:

Behavioural Change: These are the differences a person experiences in the outside world, through their behaviours, goals and outcomes; essentially it is what they are looking to create as a result of your help.

Psychological Change: These are the psychological changes that must be addressed in order for the person to create what it is they want to create. E.G. Perhaps someone would like to get a promotion (behavioural change) but they feel they can't because they lack confidence. The later would be the psychological change you need to help them resolve - or at least make some kind of improvement in. 

As a strategy, it is useful to first come up with a behavioural outcome they want to achieve, address the psychological issues that stop them from achieving it, and then continually come back to the behavioural outcome to check their progress. You can then rinse and repeat this from session to session.

That way, you are always progressing towards something tangible while, at the same time, making improvements on the psychological aspects. Many change-workers or therapist think their job is just to make people feel better but this is a limited way of looking at it: it's also about getting them to move and create.

We notice the foreground and we often forget the background...

The foreground of our experience is what we are focusing on in any given point in time. The background is everything else. Often we think of the mind as digital device - we either experience one thing or the other. But, we'd like you to consider that it actually works in layers.

It might seem like we lack choice because we are so focused in tunnel vision on what we are experiencing but, in the background, we have an infinite number of possible choices to choose from.

The process of change is often not where you create a new choice from scratch, but rather dip into the background and allow one for these potential choices to come more to the foreground.

When you think about the mind like this then many aspects of change becomes merely the process of bringing new choices from the background to the foreground into your awareness.

If you like to use this technique to practice on either yourself or someone else, please use the following five steps to guide you through the process:

Step 1. As quickly as you can drop down through the emotion. Do a kinaesthetic free fall and as quickly as you can name the emotion that is underneath.

Step 2. As quickly as you can drop through that emotion and name that emotion. As yourself “What underneath that?”

Step 3. Continue step 2 until the chain has run all the way through to a ‘void’, ‘nothing and/or unspeakable stage’ and comes out the other side to a positive kinaesthetic stage. Only go to 2 positive emotions.

Step 4. End the chain when you reach the second positive emotion. There should be a noticeable physiological shift as the chain tends to be collapsed at this point.

An ethically dubious experiment...

In this video, Kain will set you the task of looking up a really interesting - although rather dubious - experiment that will deepen your understanding of DTI.

The STANFORD PRISON EXPERIMENT was led by famous psychologist Philip Zimbardo, In 1971, the experiment was executed in order to show how the roles people play can shape and define their behaviour. 

Zimbardo tried to demonstrate that prison guards and convicts would behave in ways they thought was required. Participants were offered $15 per day and the study was to last two weeks.

Twenty-four male subjects, considered to be most mentally and emotionally stable, were chosen. Zimbardo divided the participants evenly into guards and prisoners, at random. 

He himself was going to take on the role of prison warden. The guards were given one rule: no physical punishment allowed, but other than that, they were able to run the prison as they see fit. The guards were outfitted in military attire and sunglasses and also provided batons. The prisoners, in contrast, were dressed in smocks and refused permission to wear underwear.

Prisoners were only to be addressed by their identity numbers and also had a small chain around one ankle. On the first day of the experiment, prisoners were instructed to stay at home and wait to be ‘called’ for the start of the experiment.

Their homes were raided by the real Paolo Alto police, they were charged with armed-robbery, read their rights and had their fingerprints and mug shots taken. They were strip-searched and taken to the basement of Stanford: ‘the mock prison’.

The guards were brutal, humiliating and demoralising to the prisoners. By the second day prisoners were already revolting, wanting to be let out. Zimbardo and his colleagues were also beginning to be affected by the experiment, trying to keep the revolting prisoner subjects in detention and siding with guards.

On the sixth day, Christina Maslach, a recent Stanford Ph.D., (also the fiancée of Zimbardo), was brought in to interview the guards and prisoners. She was stunned by what she saw and demanded that the experiment be terminated. Apparently, Maslach was the only person to even raise any concerns out of the fifty external visitors that had come to examine the experiment.

The NLP Parts Integration technique (applied to self)

  1.  Establish the unwanted behaviour or indecision. Then identify at least two opposing Parts – the ‘Good Part’ and ‘Bad Part’, or the Part that wants to change and the Part that keeps doing the problem.  . . 
  2. Create an image of both Parts, one in each palm of your hands. Any metaphoric representation that symbolizes each Part is appropriate. .
  3. (a) Fixate your attention on one of the Parts first. Then ask that Part what its intention is for doing what it’s doing. Keep repeating that question on whatever ‘answer’ you get, until you arrive at a positive value like love, freedom, joy etc. . (b) Fixate your attention on the other Part next. Then ask that Part what its intention is for doing what it’s doing. Keep repeating that question on whatever ‘answer’ you get, until you arrive at a positive value like love, freedom, joy etc.(c) Notice that what both Parts want (their highest intention) is either identical or compatible. . .
  4. Identify which resources each Part has, that would be useful to the other Part in achieving their highest intention. Imagine both Parts now sharing these resources.. .
  5. Have the hands turn towards each other and see the two internal images begin to merge as the hands progressively move closer together. ..
  6. As the hands come together, create a third image that symbolizes the integration of the two former Parts.  .
  7. Bring the new integrated image into your body through placing both hands on your heart, breathing it in and absorbing this whole new experience. .
  8. Relax for a few minutes and then think about that old issue in light of being a more integrated person now. .
  9. Consider how you’re going to approach your situation differently in the future, now that you’re fully integrated…

An Introduction to Metaphoric Storytelling

Most of us know what a metaphor is, but it would probably help to begin this article with a definition. A metaphor is a figure of speech in which the words we use are applied to something which is not literally applicable. It can also be representative or symbolic of something else. 

A simple example of a metaphor would be comparing your career to a cake. I might say that your qualifications are ‘the icing on the cake’ and am therefore implying that you are the cake, the whole person, enough and edible just as you are.

The icing (qualifications) makes the cake (you) more appealing and irresistible. Sometimes we find it easier to understand and overcome our difficulties if we transpose them into another situation.

Milton H. Erickson, a huge influencer in hypnotherapy, commonly used metaphor. He was very permissive in his manner and a master of the double bind, wherein the only thing a client could find was success or at least a positive outcome from their efforts.

Using metaphor is a very creative way of problem-solving. It is a tool that can be used in everyday life. When a metaphor is employed by an ethical, professional and skilled hypnotherapist, you can imagine just how powerful it can be.

There are numerous types of metaphors which are utilized in both classic rhetorical constructions and also in the context of everyday casual language. The degree of the comparison dictates what kind of metaphor it is.

Though there are more than a dozen distinct types of metaphors, there are three primary types which Steve will share with you in this video.

Conversational Hypnosis is an art form in which you need to have access to the unconscious happening within a person. Stories are a way to access this domain as stories evoke emotion, and emotion is one of the main factors in activating the unconscious mind.

When you tell a story, you are automatically getting another person’s attention, if you tell a good story you are going to be able to absorb that attention entirely. Telling good stories is as easy as making it a topic the listeners can identify with on some level, and since we are all prone to similar experiences, this should be a relatively easy battle to win! 

Once the other person’s attention is absorbed in a story, you will have already bypassed the critical factor (because it is a story and it is unarguable). People tend to not argue with another person’s real life experience, but they will identify with it on an unconscious level.

One of these ways of getting what you want from a story is to offer metaphorical resolutions within your stories. These are often called isomorphic stories, which mean they take on the same structure or shape of something else. 

In the way of using these in hypnosis, the story will be taking on some similar aspects you see in your listener. You want to tell a story that mirrors the situation or problem of your client in an indirect way.

Multiple embedded metaphors is a metaphor therapy technique that forces the listener to concentrate on several metaphor stories at the same time.

Metaphor therapy can be used to treat most psychological problems because embedded metaphors and stories are able to act directly on the subconscious mind.

The multiple embedded metaphor technique wraps one metaphoric story inside another, usually to three levels deep. The hypnotherapist starts a story, gets distracted into another story, then starts another story and doesn't finish that one and leaves the listener hanging on before finishing all the metaphor stories in reverse order.

The idea is to force the listener to keep the unfinished metaphoric stories in their mind for longer than normal. The longer the embedded metaphor stays active in the mind the more likely it is to have a therapeutic effect.

Embedded metaphors tell the audience: You don’t have it all yet.

To maintain your audience’s (or your clients) interest and attention, so they remain open to learning new things, you must let them know that they don’t have all the information yet: there is more to come, things are still open. They have some pieces, but they don’t know everything there is to know on that particular topic - yet.

And you will continue to have their attention until they think they have the final piece. We call this process of setting things up such that the audience knows, either consciously or unconsciously, that they don’t have it all yet, opening loops. Thinking you know everything there is to know about something is not a useful place to be because it prevents you from learning more. Opening loops prevent premature closure.

One way that we use to keep the audience open and in anticipation of more, so that they are taking in everything you have to say, and wanting to know more, is by telling stories - but in a particular way, which we call embedded metaphors or nested loops.

In this video, Steve will give you a demonstration about how to carry one out.

The magic of the open loop...

We all know about the 'cliff hanger'; the final 30 seconds of a T.V show that doesn't resolve itself and leave us salivating for more.

This is what is known as an open loop, and something you can use effectively in hypnotic storytelling. When you tell a story and then don't actually finish it, you create an open loop. This can have several functions:

  1. To create massive curiosity: People want to know the end of your stories so open loops make them more engaging,
  2. To embed suggestions: when you leave a loop open, you create arousal - the mind takes notice. Because of this you have a short window where you can suggest something. This suggestion will have more impact on their neurology because you have created a state of arousal with the open loop.
  3. To create continual learning: Our brain wants to close the loops. so when we deliberately leave a loop open it keeps searching for the answer in the form of learning. This creates a kind of 'continual' learning that can continue well after the story is told.

Metaphoric Open Loops

You can leave some loops open - to create arousal, curiosity and encourage continual learning - but it's best to not leave too many open. For the simple fact that the listener may start to get greatly frustrated!

So we'd recommend - if you are telling multiple stories - that you close some off and leave other open, depending on what your goals is.

Closing your metaphors creates a packaging effect, where the learning is embedded within the framework of the story.
