OVER 270 DELIGHTED TRAVELERS HAVE TAKEN THIS COURSE

———————————————————————————————————————

IMPORTANT 1:

**This course is for people who own American iPhones with American cell phone service providers.**

++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++

Have you heard some of the horror stories of people thinking they signed up for a $25 international cell phone plan and returned home from their trip to a $500 cell phone bill? It's easy to do and they probably had no idea that they were using their cell phone that much in a foreign country.

“Sometime during the 12-day Mediterranean cruise she took in May, MF made a crucial mistake: She turned her cell phone on…her phone synced to the cruise ship's cell tower and instantly started racking up data roaming charges…She came home to a $1,558 bill!" - Business Insider

“I just paid the equivalent to a flight to Paris and back just because I wanted to use Google Maps on the iPhone 3G to find my way around gay Paree." - TechCrunch

“Two weeks of travel with sporadic AT&T EDGE network usage off and on mixed with wifi when available... $3000." - BoingBoing

“I am typing this from the floor right now. I am in complete shock. I finally got my first online bill from AT&T yesterday and it came to $5,086.66!!…Well as you may have guessed by now these are all charges for using the edge network while roaming internationally (in England)." - ArcDesignConsulting

“I used my iPhone 4 data roaming turned on once during my stay in Holland, to check email. Then I turned off data roaming and did not use it again. When I returned home I had a $393.00 dollar charge." - T. Cole

The FCC website calls it “bill shock" and warns:

Roaming is complicated! Take time to understand all the rules and rates before you travel. Advance preparation can prevent disappointments such as lack of service or unexpectedly high charges on your next bill.

Introduction and Overview

04:18

If you're fairly new to Udemy, these practical tips will help you get the most out of online learning.

03:30

Many, many hotels in Europe, even modest 2-star ones, offer free Wi-Fi and restaurants are beginning to offer it too. You should spend some time researching and planning for free Wi-Fi access in your European destinations. Links and tips are included in this lecture.

Section 2: Setting Up Your iPhone for Free Access to Voicemail
02:27

Google Voice is a free VOIP (internet phone) service available if you have a Gmail account. You are setting it up to receive voicemails that come to your cell phone while you are out of the country. Why? Because you can forward your cell phone calls to Google Voice for voicemail and check those voice messages online with a free internet connection. If you try to access your voicemail through your iPhone the way you usually do in the States, it's not free in foreign countries.

03:26

Record the voicemail greeting you want your callers to hear while you are in Europe.

01:36

The Google Voice app will be your easy and free access to your voicemail messages while you are in Europe.

01:44

Receive notifications on your iPhone when you have received a new voicemail message.

02:45

Verizon customers, learn how to forward your phone calls to your Google Voice voicemail.

01:22

AT&T, Sprint, US Cellular and T-Mobile customers, learn how to find your call forwarding settings.

01:06

Test your call forwarding settings.

01:26

Practice calling your forwarded iPhone and leave a voicemail message. Then access and listen to that message using your Google Voice app.

01:10

Turn off call forwarding until your trip.

Section 3: Setting Up Your iPhone for Voice and Video Calls
02:35

The benefits of using Skype and FaceTime while you are in Europe and when to use which one.

05:57

Instructions on getting a free Skype account.

04:07

Why and how to purchase a small amount of Skype credit for phone calls you may need to make while in Europe.

02:27

Download and set up the Skype app on your iPhone.

01:11

Set up easy access to your contacts for using Skype or Google Voice.

02:25

Receive notifications on your iPhone when you receive a Skype or FaceTime call.

05:02

Calling from Skype-to-Skype is free, so it’s smart to add the Skype names of your friends and family to your Skype contacts list.

03:46

It is very important that you practice before you go on vacation to become comfortable with Skype-to-Skype and Skype-to-Phone calls.

Section 4: Setting Up Your iPhone for Text Messages
03:10

You can receive and send text messages through Wi-Fi with Verizon's “cloud texting” app called VZ Messages. Basically, this means that your text messages are acting more like email messages, but they look and feel like text messages to you. Your contacts can text your cell phone number and you can receive and send messages whenever you have free Wi-Fi in Europe.

03:12

If your iPhone carrier does not offer a cloud texting app, you can still send and receive text messages through your new Google Voice number. This will require you to notify your friends and family to use a different phone number to text you while you are in Europe, but it will allow you to text whenever you have free Wi-Fi.

02:04

For friends and family who text via iMessage, you need to ask them to check the following setting on their iPhone before you leave. Without this setting, you cannot receive their messages with cloud texting through Verizon or Google Voice.

03:36

Practice "cloud texting" with a friend.

Section 5: Downloading Maps for Sightseeing Assistance
08:30

While you won’t have guided navigation while you’re sightseeing, you can download maps of the places you’ll be visiting and use those maps for sightseeing. You can also use Google Maps to see your location via GPS, which does not require Wi-Fi or cellular service.

Practice!
