Photoshop has some colorful Adjustment Tools. They are divided in five groups. They include:

  2. Vibrance
  3. Invert
  4. Shadows/Highlights
  5. Desaturate

In this lecture we are looking at the first group Brightness/Contrast which consists tools to modify different types of exposure in an image.

The second group of tools, Vibrance, can be used to adjust the colors often image

The third tool, Invert, affects how the colors are handled with in an image.

The fourth adjustment tool, Shadows/Highlights affect aspects of shadow and highlight. And finally Desaturate can be used to shift and equalize color.

Photoshop provides us with a number of tools which allow us to adjust the image itself. Here you will find the following options:

  • Image size
  • Canvas size
  • Image rotation
  • Crop
  • Trim
  • Reveal all
Section 4: Working with tools

The Marquee Tool is used to select areas of an image, which can then be copied, cut or cropped. Parts of a graphic can be selected to apply a filter or effect to a particular area. There are the following options within the tool available:

  • Rectangular marquee
  • Elliptical marquee
  • Single row marquee
  • Single column marquee

The Magic Wand Tool selects pixels based on tone and color. You have two options:

  • Quick selection tool
  • Magic wand tool

The Lasso Tools are useful for drawing freeform segments of a selection border.

The different options are:

  • Regular Lasso Tool
  • Polygonal Lasso Tool
  • Magnetic Lasso Tool

When using the Lasso and the Marquee Tools from your selection there are a number of tools available under the Select Menu under Modify you will find the following:

  • Border
  • Smooth
  • Expand
  • Contract
  • Feather

Cropping means removing parts of an image. You can easily trim an image using the Crop Tool.

The Healing Tools allow you to fix image imperfections such as scratches, blemishes, etc. It will match the texture, lighting, and shades of the sampled area to the source area. The result of the repair makes the whole image blend together.

Here you have to following options:

  • Spot Healing Brush Tool
  • Healing Brush Tool
  • Patch Tool
  • Content Aware Tool

The Clone Stamp Tool allows you to duplicate part of an image. It will also help clear out scars or blemishes on a photo.

Photoshop offers four tools for painting and editing image color:

  • Brush Tool
  • Pencil Tool
  • Color Replacement Tool
  • Mixer Brush Tool

The Brush Tool and the Pencil Tool work like a traditional drawing tools applying color with brush strokes.

The brush types are different in:

  • Thickness
  • Weight
  • Texture
  • Oil Brush
  • Water Brush
  • Shape
  • Leaves
  • Stars

The Color Replacement Tool lets you paint roughly over an area of an image. The Mixer Brush tool allows you to paint more realistically in Photoshop.

The Dodge Tool and the Burn Tool lighten or darken parts of an image.

You can use these tools to improve your images in different ways:

  • To improve the exposure of your photo and bring out detail
  • To direct attention through creative use of highlights and shadows
  • To create impact by adding dramatic highlights and shadows

The Dodge Tool will lighten colors in your photo. For example:

  • The more you use this tool in one area, the more it will become white.
  • Make teeth whiter.

The Burn Tool will darken colors in your photo. For example:

  • The more you use this tool in one area, the closer it will get to black.

Gradients are a great way to add something special to a background or image. According to Adobe, “The Gradient tool creates a gradual blend between multiple colors.” Choose from preset gradient fills or create your own fills.

You have the following options:

  • Gradient Tool
  • Paintbucket Tool
  • 3D Material Drop Tool

Here are three different tools available:

  • Blur Tool
  • Sharpen Tool
  • Smudge Tool

The Blur Tool will allow you to blur parts of your photo. The Sharpen Tool allows you to make the edges of a selected area of your photo stand out. The Smudge Tool is helpful when you want to remove dust and scratches on old photos. This can also be used to make a photo appear as a painting when used across the entire image

You can draw shapes and designs freehand. The Path Tools remain editable, and these edits don’t affect the resolution at all, which is a huge benefit.

The family of the Path Tools contain the following:

  • Pen Tool
  • Freeform Pen Tool
  • Add Anchor Point Tool
  • Delete Anchor Point Tool
  • Convert Point Tool

The Pen Tool in particular is that it gives you the ability to isolate an area of a photographand do so in a very, very precise way. The tool also has a magnetic option that gives it the ability to detect edges.

Section 5: Working With Layers

A Layer is the term used to describe the different levels at which you can place an object or image file. In Photoshop you can stack, merge or define layers when creating an image.

A quick layer summary:

  • You are working on top of or on copies of that photo.
  • You can use blending modes to change the way layers interact.
  • You can change the opacity of any effects.
  • You can add layer masks so that you can work selectively on your photo with any adjustment you make.

A Layer Group act as folders for layers you choose. You can add, remove or shuffle around the layers within a group. Use layer groups to organize layers and make duplicating multiple layers easier.

Adjustment Layers don’t change anything actually below them. You can apply an adjustment on a transparency layer and it will become an adjustment layer.

To adjust layers Photoshop offers numerours options:

  • Solid Color
  • Gradient
  • Pattern
  • Levels
  • Curves
  • Color Balance
  • Brightness/Contrast
  • Hue/Saturation
  • Selective Color

  • Gradient Map
  • Invert
  • Threshold

The Type Mask Tool enables you to cut type out of solid color or image layers.

Section 6: Working with Text

Photoshop offers some pretty amazing options for creating and utilizing text in your images.

There are four different options within the Type Tool menu:

  • Inflate
  • Squeeze
  • Twist
Section 7: Working with Filters

Under the Filter Menu you will find the following options:

  • Filter Gallery
  • Adaptive Wide Angle
  • Camera Raw Filter

The Render Filter does not affect a photograph. It actually generates new textures based on what you choose.

The Sharpen Filter simply sharpens your image. Note that the Sharpen and Sharpen More options are subtle and they have no controls. Smart Sharpen and Unsharp Mask gives you control over the result.

The Stylize submenu contains a number of options as well:
