Section 1: Getting Started

Meditation can help you even if you don't think you are a good meditator. But, this won't happen if you don't practice. Give yourself a chance to see the results in your own life and you won't be sorry!

Even "bad" meditations help. Just do your best.

Use this to feel peace right away. This is a meditation for beginners. Use it as often as seems helpful. Eventually you'll learn how to get into it yourself. Inner peace can become a habit!

Meditation is not just sitting and blanking the mind of thoughts. It's an art and a skill that must be developed over time like learning to play a musical instrument, or how to excel in a sport.

Think of meditation as "spiritual hygiene." Like brushing your teeth or bathing. We do many things to take care of the body, but little to take care of the mind and spirit. Meditation is great but it can't help you, if you don't practice.

Why Focus on the Breath?

Learn a powerful breathing technique to control your emotions and stay centered in difficult situations.

Learn how to make a chair fit you perfectly for meditation.

Learn how to use a meditation bench and how to adjust it to fit your body.

Sitting in a cross-legged posture for meditation is not helpful if you are not comfortable and relaxed in the position. This video will help you figure out if this position is for you at this time and offers some tips to improve your experience when sitting this way.

The second guided meditation for Chapter 1. This practice is to prepare you for the technique we introduce in Chapter 2. It would be good to practice this until it feels comfortable for you before proceeding to the next chapter.

If you are just starting out meditating and want more energy, to feel less drowsy, or to be more alert and focused, practicing these before you meditate can really help.

These are a couple of exercises taught by Paramhansa Yogananda, to prepare one for meditation. They are just a sample of the full set which includes about 40 different techniques. The full set only takes about 12-15 minutes once you know them and I can highly recommend them for improving physical health as well as meditation.

Instructor Biography

Turiya Moore, Meditation and Yoga Philosophy Instructor

Turiya has been sharing the yoga, meditation, and the practical “how to be happy all the time” teachings of Paramhansa Yogananda since 2001.

The science of Yoga is universal and non-sectarian. Yogananda did not invent these teachings. He simply explained them in all of their subtlety in our own language, for the specific challenges we face at this time.

Turiya founded and developed the Ananda Meditation Center in Torrance, CA, and served as its spiritual director and main teacher from 2001 through 2010. He teaches several levels of meditation and yoga courses as well as courses on Patanjali’s Raja Yoga, The Bhagavad Gita, and Happiness and Success Through Yoga Principals by Swami Kriyananda.

He also makes meditation benches and sells them at and designs websites for spiritual organizations and small businesses. His goal in this course is to offer support, guidance, and inspiration to those who seek lasting happiness, success, or inner peace through meditation.
