Understanding Why Do We Use PowerPoint? In Chapter Two we covered why Power Point is used ?It's is simply used because  :It is easy to learn ,accessible, flexible, easy to read, the slides are reusable, and it is powerful .PowerPoint has achieved its status because:

  • We are in the Information age and we’re processing more information than ever before.
  • We don’t have as much time to read anymore, thus a visual medium is more powerful.
  • We use presentations to talk and read less .

Planning :Benjamin Franklin said :”If you Fail to Plan You Plan to Fail” :In Chapter Three you learned the Three P's: Plan,Plan and Plan you learned how to plan your presentation, a planning template was discussed by a screen-cast voice over , the Planning Template should include the following :

  • How many minutes you will spend on each slide
  • What to write on each slide
  • What to say when presenting each slide.
  • Which resources are needed for each slide .
  • A planning example is found in the resources with the PowerPoint associated with it, this example will show you how to plan your Presentation step by step .

Consistency: you learned in Chapter Four the main areas that need to be consistent to improve the look of your slides they are:

  • Consistent Text: don’t use too many types or size of text, use one type of text for the title, one for the subtitle, and one more type of text for the text on the slides .
  • Consistent Color: use the same colors as much as possible throughout your presentation.
  • Consistent Layout : use the same slide layout throughout the whole presentation:If you decide to use Title and Content, try to stick out to the same selection throughout the Presentation.
  • Theme : Use the same theme(design) throughout the whole presentation
  • Use a Slide Master ( Screen-cast with voice over was given in Chapter 5  )
  • Consistent Images:  When you are using several images throughout your presentation, choosing pictures and clip art that are similar in style will improve the look of the presentation; also consider repeating a particular graphic throughout the Presentation to represent the same point or concept.
  • Consistent Formatting: Consistent formatting will give your presentation a professional look ,use the same formatting of fonts, Images, Lists, animations  backgrounds animationsbackgrounds, etc.

Font : In Chapter Six you learned what type of Font to use , what size of Font ,and  what type of Format of Font to use by showing you on the screen some examples to compare ,in the resources you will find a document comparing Serif’s and Sans Serifs Fonts

  • Serifs are the small line “tails” at the edges of letter, Sans-Serifs do not have the tails at the edge of the letter Sans-Serif means “without” Serifs. Sans-Serif retain their shape when blown up thus ,Sans-Serif are best to be read on the screen and your advised to use them in your Presentation

KIS (Keep IT Simple) : In Chapter Seven you learned how to (KIS) the presentation by keeping it simple this is done by not using many types ,and colors of Font .

  • You learned to shy away from all caps, italics and using many colors when formatting your text , this will make your Presentation complicated and difficult to read by the audience, this was done  by a screen-cast with voice-over .
  • You learned to abide by the 6X7 rule which states: No more than 6 lines per slide No more than 7 words per line.

Lists : In Chapter Eight you learned the difference between bullet-ed and numbered lists , when and how to use them , by: knowing the difference between bullets and numbers ,limiting the number of list items  ,emboldening the main point ,keeping text to a minimum then given an example from the course Presentation

Contrast: color contrast is the difference in lightness or darkness between a foreground and background color in Chapter Nine you learned how to use Contrast to make your Presentation readable and the Color Wheel is discussed briefly where opposite colors on the wheel have the highest contrast, the contrast document is kept in the resources at your disposal.

Pictures, Sounds ,and Transitions : In Chapter Ten you learned not use : Pixilated ,small, and stretched images , in addition to that you learned not to use many images on the same slide. Then you learned: How to use sounds, and transitions, then a demonstration was given to you to show you how to handles pictures when inserting them into your slides without stretching them , you were also advised not to overuse sound ,transition effects, and animations .

Tips and Graphs: In Chapter Eleven you were shown how to create a professional Graph in eight steps, these steps are:

  • Removing Back Ground Grid Lines
  • Adding Data Labels
  • Deleting Vertical(Value) Axis
  • Adding Chart Title
  • Resizing the Graph
  • Formatting Data Cells
  • Re positioning Data Labels
  • Changing The Fill Colors
  •  You also learned how to make your screen Back or White, and why you need to do that? Then you learned how to hide the mouse pointer? You also learnt when to use handouts ,PowerPoint notes and how to print them.

Summary: In Chapter Twelve you were given quick summary of the whole course by screen casting the course presentation showing you how the tips and techniques discussed in the course were used, the course presentation is uploaded in the resources for you to view , read the notes they will give you more insight to the course ,in addition to that Presentation 1 is the example used to create the Slide Master is kept in the resources for you to view and use .

Assessment: At the end you have a Ten Questions assessment to take in order measure the knowledge that you have gained during the course.

In a nutshell, in Presentation just write the key points that you want to discuss don’t read the text off the screen, that’s an insult to your audience, they know how to read .

Face your audience when you talk , try not to look at the screen you have to give the audience added value by discussing the presented text on the screen in depth , you can write a script or use notes in power point then print them on paper for you to remember what to speak.

Don’t forget to Plan.Plan and Plan , rehearse  a few times before you present , if you have something you want to emphasize just make the screen black by pressing the B button on the keyboard while in slide show view , this way the audience will be attentive to you rather than their eyes being glued at the screen .

In Presentation use Sans-Serif type of Font because they retain their shape when blown up, thus Sans-Serifs are best to be read on the screen , especially with people having reading difficulties or dyslexia , Serifs are better to read when printed ,because the strokes at the end will help by making a flow of letters , thus do not print the slides  print handouts using Serifs .

The magic recipe to a perfect presentation is to (KIS) Keep It Simple , this is done by not using many types of fancy fonts , colors ,pictures, animation , and slide transitions , last but not least use the DIM option to give focus on the point being discussed .
