Instructor Biography

Kalena Jordan, Director of Studies and Digital Marketing Consultant

I suppose you could consider me a SEO veteran - if only that didn't make me sound ancient! I was one of the first search engine optimization experts in Australia and New Zealand and I'm quite well known and respected in the search industry, particularly in the US. I've been marketing web sites online since 1996 and blogging about search since 2002.

My first SEO success came in 1996 as Marketing Manager for an Australian computer systems company, when I was able to design their web site and have it rank in the top searche results for "kitchen design software". This resulted in a million dollar joint venture for the company with a US firm and my SEO career took off. I was also ranked number one on Google for "grumpy bitch" for 5 straight years, before being knocked off the top by someone grumpier than I ;-)

In 2004, I co-founded Search Engine College, an online training institution offering instructor-led short courses and downloadable self-study courses in Search Engine Optimisation and Search Engine Marketing subjects. Since launch, the College has attracted students from over 60 countries worldwide and I'm incredibly proud of our global reach and the standard of education our team provides.

Currently based in the coolest little capital city in the world (Wellington), I give training workshops across New Zealand on behalf of the Institute of IT Professionals, as well as providing consultancy services for global clients. I write a regular column for Site Pro News, as well as an agony aunt style search engine advice blog called Ask Kalena. I have a Bachelor of Arts in Communication from the University of Newcastle in Australia.

When I'm not suffering through Group Power classes at the gym, I enjoy hearty banter on Twitter and trekking around New Zealand in search of tricky geocaches.
