Curriculum

Section 1: Introduction To The Course
02:09

This is the introduction to the course. I explain what you should expect from the entire course moving forward.

03:00

In this lecture I explain why keyword research is important as a first step before you start producing new content on your website.

01:20

I write about SEO, productivity, project management, and niche sites. My work has been featured all over the web, including Ahrefs, Empire Flippers, Niche Pursuits, Side Hustle Nation and more.

I am a Digital Marketing Consultant and a Project Management Professional (PMP, certified in 2008 by the Project Management Institute).

I started my digital career after experiencing great success building Amazon Associate niche websites. I started Niche Site Project to help people create niche sites using project management.

Before that, I was your typical worker bee working a 9 – 5 gig, though it was more like 8 – 8.

I really didn’t like it very much, but I learned a bunch in a very short time in management consulting.

I worked all over the country, traveled full time, and lived out of a suitcase.

I’ve been a software engineer, a business consultant, software tester, and of course, a PM. If you’re interested in my professional background, see my LinkedIn profile.

I live in Montana with my amazing wife and awesome Border Collie, Brodie. I enjoy running, hiking, Southern barbecue, and homebrewing beer (of course, when the homebrewing is done I get to enjoy drinking it with friends).

Section 2: Keyword Research Tools
01:48

In this lecture I introduce you to the Google Adwords Keyword planner. This is the free tool that Google provides to do basic keyword research. Most other keyword research tools also use this data for finding keyword data.

04:05

In this video I walk you through how to use the Google Adwords keyword planner to search for new keyword ideas. You also learn how to download those ideas into CSV format.

02:21

In this lecture I walk you through searching for bulk keyword volume with a list of keywords. This is useful if you wish to get data on lots of keywords all at once.

01:22

In this lecture I walk you through taking multiple keyword lists and combining them to quickly merge different types of keywords. I don't often find myself using this tool but it can come in handy in the right situations.

Section 3: Comparing Keyword Tools
02:19

In this video I introduce you to a tool called Long Tail Pro which is an amazing keyword research tool. In some ways it's much better than the free keyword planner but can be limiting without the platinum upgrade.

07:26

In this video I walk you through using Long Tail Pro for researching keywords and understanding the basic functionality of the tool.

02:20

In this lecture I compare some of the main differences between Long Tail Pro and the Google Keyword Planner.

Section 4: Using Long Tail Keywords
01:29

In this section we introduce you to long tail keywords and why they are important. Long tail keywords are generally easier to rank for and contain more specific phrases.

02:33

A good way to do some basic research is to use the Google results page. You can start to type in specific keyword phrases and get basic ideas of what others have already searched for.

Often times Google won't even report on this data in the Keyword planner but most terms will in fact yield traffic if you use them for creating new content.

02:48

Another trick you can use to find out what's currently working on your website is to use Google Webmaster tools. This is only going to provide data based on how people found you but it may give you some ideas on what content you can also better optimize or improve upon.

07:17

Google Trends shows the popularity of a search term so you can see if it's getting more or less popular. When you search for a term on Trends, you’ll see a graph showing the term’s popularity over time in (nearly) real time.

You can also see related terms.

06:02
Google Correlate finds search patterns which correspond with real-world trends.Google Correlate is a tool on Google Trends which enables you to find queries with a similar pattern to a target data series. The target can either be a real-world trend that you provide (e.g., a data set of event counts over time) or a query that you enter.

Section 5: Other Sites To Use For Long Tail Research
02:23

Soovle provides autosuggest words for various search engines, including Amazon.

04:13

Ubersuggest is the biggest, most powerful autosuggest tool. It queries Google for you and you can copy & paste the keywords out of the tool.

02:45

The Keyword Tool is slightly less capable than the Ubersuggest tool. Some people do like the layout and use the paid version of the Keyword Tool.

03:01

Quora is a high quality Q&A site. It's a great place to get ideas about content and will give you ideas for keywords to search for.

03:19

Keyword Xtreme is a really awesome research tool which covers various search engines such as eBay and Amazon as well as the Android app store among many others. I highly recommend checking it out.

Section 6: Determining Commercial Intent
02:30

It's really important to understand the intent of the user. In our case, we want to think about whether the user wants to buy something.

04:56

There are 4 kinds of keywords:

  1. Buy Now - pre purchase
  2. Product - Earlier pre purchase, researching a specific product
  3. Informational - "How to", "best way to" - The vast majority of keywords online are Informational keywords
  4. General information
05:01

Adwords Suggested Bid is basically the CPC, the average that an advertiser will pay to show the ad. It gives a good idea of the commercial intent of a search term. But if you’re doing an affiliate program (like Amazon or Clickbank) the CPC does not apply directly.

Section 7: Competition Analysis
02:29
You found keywords and they are buyer driven. What else? Your competition… You mainly focus your analysis on the top 10, first page of Google. The Search Engine Results Page (SERPs). It’s an art and takes experience to understand a term that is hard to rank for and a term that is easy.
05:30

MozBar is a free plug in by Moz.com. It tells you metrics of a site or page and is super helpful when reviewing the competition.

It lets you:

  • Access important SEO metrics at a glance as you surf the web.
  • Create custom searches by search engine, country, and region or city.
  • See how difficult it is to rank for a given keyword.
  • Expose page elements with the Analyze Page overlay.
  • Preview and validate authorship, schema.org, and other markup inside the browser.
  • View social metrics for Facebook, Twitter, and Google+.
07:48

Majestic is one of the best backlink clawlers and can give you great insights about your competitions backlinks.

SEMRush
05:30
06:33

Ahrefs is my preferred backlink crawler and seems to index new backlinks faster than Majestic.

06:30

We go through an example of analyzing the competition for a low competition site.

Section 8: Case Study - A Perfect Long Tail Keyword Generating Revenue
09:25

In this video I walk through:

  1. Showing a long tail keyword with decent traffic volume (390/month)
  2. Showing the article ranking #1 for the keyword on Google
  3. How on-page SEO was done - using the keyword as needed with a high quality unique article
  4. How Amazon affiliate products were used in the article
  5. How the article is earning profits from getting Google organic traffic
Section 9: Conclusion To The Course
03:18

This is the conclusion to the course. Thank you again for taking the time to go through our course. If you have any questions feel free to send us a message or start a discussion here on Udemy.
