When I was struggling with depression years ago, I wanted to learn how to treat depression without medication, but I didn't find much help with this at all.

In fact, depending on who was talking, treating depression without medication wasn't even an option, and my only solution was to find the best medication for anxiety and depression that I could find.

Unfortunately, pharmaceutical companies and drug manufacturers spend millions and millions of dollars each year to promote this kind of message, which is a big reason why you'll find relatively little information on how to deal with depression without medication (and you might even be told that depression treatment without medication is impossible).

Indeed, if you're like me, you might have been told that you need drugs, pills, or medication to stop being depressed, and that you won't stop getting out of depression without them, which makes you feel more helpless, stressed out, and depressed than ever before!

But is this really the case? And is the best medication for depression really antidepressants?

The answer might surprise you...

Note: if you are currently on antidepressants, do not stop taking antidepressants without someone else's help.

But if you're given a pill, your thinking changes to: maybe my situation will improve, and maybe I can get rid of depression and have a better future

Remember: the most important factor for getting rid of depression is to improve your thinking

Here, the powerful change in thinking is to go from "I can't or won't stop being depressed" to "I can stop being depressed", and the change in thinking feels great

You don't need a sugar pill to change your thinking this way!

The important lesson is this: you don't need antidepressants to stop being depressed. Indeed, just believing that you can get rid of depression is about as effective as taking an antidepressant!

Or, let's say that you think that being depressed makes you a more "profound", "deep", or "intelligent" person, and that it makes you have a much more meaningful life in some way.

Again, you're seeing lots of value in depression, so it won't make sense for you to get rid of it, which means you'll predictably struggle with depression more.

The key lesson, here, is that you've go to be absolutely clear in your mind that it's ok and great in every way to get rid of depression, and that you don't lose anything of value by becoming depression-free. (Instead, you gain lots of positive value, without any sacrifice or loss at all on your part.)

Once you're completely clear about this, it will be completely sensible for you to get rid of depression, even if the rest of the world wanted you to remain depressed, for some weird reason.

And since it makes complete sense for you to get rid of depression, you find it much easier for you to do so.

For example, if you're thankful for the food on your table, then you see positive value in that food, and that positive value you see is already good enough for you to be pleased and satisfied with it.

This kind of mentality naturally already helps you feel good and happier about having this going for you in your life, but there is just one ingredient missing: you've got to allow yourself to be happy with that positive value you see, in order to actually feel happy.

For example, if you're thankful for the food on your table, but you think it's bad or wrong for you to be happy with it, when there's so much suffering and starvation in the world, then you won't actually feel happy, because you're blocking feelings of happiness by seeing it as bad or wrong.

In order to feel happy, you've got to allow yourself to be happy, and you do that by appreciating that it's ok and great for you to be happy, no matter what.

So here's a simple formula: gratitude + allowing yourself to be happy = happiness.

And the happier you become, naturally the less depressed you become, since you're replacing depression and negative emotions with greater happiness, which is your entire goal in the first place!

So how do you make this happen quickly and easily?

An easy way to turn this knowledge into action is to use the Daily Happiness Tool every morning, first thing in the morning, to be thankful for at least one thing every day. It reminds you to allow yourself to feel happy, and the result is that you naturally become happier.

But let's say you change your thinking to think like this: "I can accept and handle being depressed, and I can also take action to eliminate it."

With this kind of thinking, you naturally feel more calm, more confident, and you feel better in so many different ways that naturally help lift you out of depression faster and easier.

So this is what it means, when you change how you think to change how you feel. You're just replacing a "negative" thought that makes you feel bad and more depressed, with a more "positive" thought that makes you feel better, happier, and helps you become depression-free.

Now, how can you turn this knowledge into action?

It's very simple. You can use the Feel Good Tool every day (ideally, every morning) to change how you think and change how you feel.

Simply enter in something that you feel bad and depressed about, and that you want to feel better about.

For example, I want to feel better about: "Not having a job".

Even if you're dealing with a negative thought that is completely true or valid, you can follow this process to feel better and happier.

For example, let's say you're thinking a negative thought like: "I have no friends".

To eliminate this negative thought, first remove your mind's motivation to think this way, by appreciating that it makes you feel bad and depressed, and it doesn't add any positive value to your life.

So even if it's true or valid, so what?

It just doesn't make sense to think this negative thought, when you can just as easily think a true or valid positive thought that helps you, instead.

After you understand this, now it's time to pick a positive replacement thought by taking the following steps:

First try an opposite positive thought, and see if you can consider it true or valid (for example, try "I do have friends, and I am thankful for them", and see if you can consider this positive thought true or valid

If you don't find this opposite positive thought true or valid, you can reframe the negative thought using "Even if", "but", or "even though". (For example, "Even if I have no friends, I can make friends")

For our example, let's say you think it's definitely true to think: "I have no friends".

In that case, you can replace this negative thought with the more positive thought: "Even if I have no friends, I can make friends".

This change in thinking will naturally help you feel better and happier and less depressed.

Now, how do you turn this knowledge into action?

It's very simple. Every day, use the Positive Thinking Tool in the morning to replace at least one negative thought that makes you feel bad and depressed with a more positive thought that makes you feel better and happier.

The result is that you'll consistently replace negative thinking with positive thinking, and by doing so, you'll naturally achieve your goal of becoming happy and depression-free.

I'll know I've successfully achieved this, when:

1. I take the downloadable "Depression Test" (CES-D Test) included in this course, and I score 16 or less

2. I don't feel depressed anymore, and I haven't felt depressed for the past week (this is the big one)

I have been consistently happy to some degree for the past week (even if I'm not the happiest person in the world, I can still honestly say that I'm feeling better and enjoying life again, at least a little; I can honestly say that I've felt happy to some degree for at least 4 days or more, the majority of the past week)

Whenever I socially interact with people, I want to feel great, and happy, and find it easy and effortless to enjoy interacting with them, and find it easy to smile, laugh, and enjoy my time with them, without even thinking about it

Whenever I am exercising, even if it's just a quick 10 minute walk, I want to feel great, and happy, and more energized by getting exercise, and to exercise easily and effortlessly, without even thinking about it

Whenever I go outside and get some sunlight, I want to feel great, and happy, and enjoy feeling the sunlight on my face, and enjoy my time in the sunlight easily and effortlessly, without even thinking about it

Whenever I take Omega 3 Supplements in the morning, I want to feel great, and happy, and enjoy knowing that I am doing something to improve my thinking and brain function, and regularly get plenty of Omega 3 easily and effortlessly, without even thinking about it

LOCK IN THIS SUCCESS

Think of the visual imagery as a clear road map of what you want to do in the future.

Just as you can see a route in your head of how you want to get home, you can also see a route in your mind of how you want to be and how you want to act in the future.

The more familiar you are with this route in your mind, the easier it is to immediately and automatically act that way in the future, without even thinking about it.

For this reason, it's important that you visualize the desired journey and actions you want to take, and not just the desired destination.

VISUALIZE THE JOURNEY, NOT JUST THE DESTINATION

For example, instead of just visualizing how good and happy you feel having lost weight, visualize yourself feeling good and happy with every specific step you take to get there.

For example, visualize yourself feeling good and happy turning down dessert, even if everyone else around you is ordering dessert.

Visualize yourself feeling good and happy exercising in the morning, and feeling good and happy eating smaller portions of food, and so on.

By knowing exactly how you want to act and feel in the future, and creating this vivid roadmap in your mind, you naturally find it easy to act in those ways in the future, which gets you to where you want to go more easily.

Your goal right now is to get rid of depression and be happy, instead. You also now know the specific, actionable steps you're going to take to make this happy.

That's great.

But how do you know when you've succeeding in getting rid of depression? What does "success" with this mean to you?

It's important that right now you identify clear criteria for success with eliminating depression, so that you can know without a doubt whether or not you've achieved your goal.

You can come up with your own criteria for success, or you can just use the recommended criteria for success that I state below:

I'll know I've successfully achieved this, when:

This will already put you on the road to getting rid of depression faster and easier.

Visualizing the kind of success you want to achieve, when you take action to get rid of depression, helps you do 2 things:

It helps you see the goal or target you want to hit even more clearly (therefore, you have more success hitting your target, since you have a better idea of what you're aiming for)

It helps you see the desired route in your mind that you want to take to hit your target (the more you know the route, and the better you feel about that route, the easier it is for you to automatically follow that route to achieve your goal)

So right now, just take a moment to visualize the kind of depression-free success you want to achieve.

For example, visualize yourself feeling happy, with a smile on your face, and visualize yourself feeling great about yourself and your life. Visualize how great it feels to be free of depression, and how great it feels to enjoy having more self confidence, more energy, and how great it feels to easily enjoy socially interacting with other people, and enjoying their company.

See this visual for success in your mind, and lock it in. This is the target you want to hit.

Now, go a little deeper, and visualize an enjoyable path that leads to this success, an enjoyable path that is naturally easy for you to take.

For example, visualize yourself feeling great, better, and happier each morning, as you use the Daily Happiness Tool to feel better and more positive each day.

Similarly, visualize yourself continuing to feel great, even better, and even happier each morning, as you use the Feel Good Tool to feel better about something every day.

And finally, visualize yourself feeling fantastic, as you feel even better and happier each morning, as you use the Positive Thinking Tool to get rid of a negative thought for good, and replace it with a more positive thought. Visualize how good it feels to be changed on a very deep level that naturally makes you feel happier and helps sets you free of depression.

The idea, here, is to visualize each and every step you're going to take to improve your thinking each day, and how great it feels to do it, so that you find it easy to naturally and automatically take this path and improve your thinking each day.

By connecting each of these steps with wonderful, positive emotions, you naturally find it easy to take the steps that lead you to being happy and depression-free, which means that you naturally find it easy (or at least a lot easier!) to become happy and depression-free, since you enjoy each and every step of the journey.

For this reason, to make it even easier to get rid of depression and be happy, visualize how great and wonderful it feels to use the Daily Happiness Tool, Feel Good Tool, and Positive Thinking tool right before you go to bed, to put yourself in a more calm, positive, relaxed, happier state, and how good it feels knowing that these kinds of positive emotions will naturally help you get better, more restful sleep, which makes it even easier for you to feel happier and depression-free.

And visualize how great and wonderful it feels to get in bed in time to get plenty of restful sleep each night (at least 7 hours of sleep that will leave you feeling more refreshed the next morning...

And visualize how after you use the Daily Happiness Tool, Feel Good Tool, and Positive Thinking Tool in the morning, how great and wonderful it feels to go on a brief 10 minute walk outside that helps you clear your mind...

And how great and wonderful it feels to feel the sunshine on your face as you walk outside...

And how great and wonderful it feels to say hello or smile at the people you meet, and enjoy a brief social interaction with them...

And so on.

It is up to you to make these visuals as personal and as relevant to you as possible, seeing each of the actionable steps that you're going to take to get rid of direction in a very positive, enjoyable way, so that you naturally find it easy to take these steps.

Your assignment: use the Confidence & Success Tool and enter in your visuals in Step 2 of the "Know How To Achieve Your Goal & Determine Successful Completion" right under the area where you listed your criteria for success.

You will be amazed by how doing so naturally helps you get rid of depression even faster and easier, since it naturally makes your journey so much easier, more enjoyable, and automatic for you.

You've increased your motivation to get rid of depression, wanting to do it for yourself, even if no one else wants you to stop being depressed (the more motivated you are to achieve something, the more confident you can be that you will achieve it)

You've determined why it makes complete sense for you to get rid of depression, and why it's not bad or wrong in any way for you to stop being depressed, but instead ok and great in every way (this naturally makes you more comfortable with getting rid of depression, and the comfortable you are with doing something, the more confident you are)

You've identified clear, actionable steps that you can take to achieve your desired goal of getting rid of depression (such as improving your thinking with the Daily Happiness Tool, Feel Good Tool, and Positive Thinking Tool each morning)

Now, when you reflect on all this, it's time for you to appreciate everything you've already done, as well as everything you have going for you, to establish how confident you are that you can eliminate depression in a certain amount of time, if you made it a priority to achieve this. (Like, 4 hours, 1 day, 1 week, 1 month, 1 year, etc.).

The idea, here, is not to establish a "deadline" that you have to get rid of depression by, but to clarify to yourself that you definitely are confident that you can get rid of depression, since you believe you can get rid of it within a certain time frame.

By establishing this degree of confidence, you're naturally making yourself even more confident, by appreciating your capabilities, and appreciating what you are capable of achieving.

This is absolutely crucial to do, because if you lack confidence in yourself, and you think that you "can't" get rid of depression no matter what -- that it will never end for you -- then it's already game over for you.

Here's why:

If you think you "can't" get rid of depression, it will kill your energy and motivation to do anything to improve your situation, so you won't do anything to improve your thinking or lifestyle, and you'll predictably remain depressed. In this way, the belief that you "can't" get rid of depression becomes a self-fulfilling prophecy.

On the other hand, if you think that you definitely can get rid of depression within a certain amount of time, it energizes you even more to take action to achieve it, and you naturally take action to get rid of depression, since you believe it's possible to do this. The result is that your confidence in yourself and your abilities naturally opens the door to helping you get rid of depression.

For this reason, before you go any further, it is absolutely crucial that you establish what degree of confidence you have that you can eliminate depression, by seriously thinking about how fast you can get rid of depression by improving your thinking and lifestyle if you made it a priority.

No matter how depressed you are right now, I believe you could definitely achieve this in 30 days or less (or even 7 days or less!), if you made this a top priority for you, and you diligently used the Daily Happiness Tool, Feel Good Tool, Positive Thinking Tool every morning and evening, and you also did the other lifestyle changes that will make you feel better and happier.

But at the end of the day, here, what matters is what you believe about yourself and your situation, not me.

So just establish a degree of confidence that you can comfortably and honestly accept.

Section 6: Beat Depression Faster & Easier

Blaming yourselves and others for your depression only makes you more depressed.

In this lesson, learn how to let go of the blame, so that you become depression-free faster and easier, and learn what to do instead of blaming yourself and others for depression.

Remember, to achieve your goal of getting rid of depression and being happy, instead, you've got to take action to achieve it.

For example, knowing that you can get rid of depression by improving your thinking is one thing.

But actually using the Daily Happiness Tool, Feel Good Tool, and Positive Thinking each morning to actually improve your thinking is another.

Yes, taking this course to get rid of depression is a positive action in and of itself, since it gives you the knowledge of how to become happy and depression-free. Also, the improvements in thinking that you've learned in this course will naturally help you become happy and depression-free faster and easier.

But again, it now boils down to taking action every day to become and remain depression-free and happy, and this means consistently taking action to:

Improve your thinking

Get exercise

Get sunlight

Have enjoyable social interactions

Go to bed in time to get plenty of restful sleep each night (at least 7 hours)

By this point, you've probably already done all of these things (or at least some of them!)

So now it's time to reflect constructively on your actions and learn from them in a way that makes it even easier for you to get rid of depression and be happy.

Evaluate what to stop, start, or continue doing to get rid of depression even faster and easier

Appreciate that every action you've taken to get rid of depression is a success in and of itself (so even if you haven't eliminated depression, yet, you haven't 'failed'; quite the contrary, you've inherently already succeeded in some way just by taking action to improve your condition)

See positive value in everything you've learned, gained, and achieved as a result of your actions

This kind of thoughtful reflection with your actions will naturally make you happier with everything you've already achieved, help you identify areas for improvement where you can achieve what you want even faster and easier, and overall, it will leaving you feeling even better, more motivated, and more confident.

In such a way, this kind of thoughtful reflection on your actions naturally leads to greater success, as well as help you enjoy your success even more.

Assignment: do this kind of thoughtful reflection in the last step of the Confidence & Success Tool.

Am I suffering from depression, or have I finally gotten rid of it? How do I know if I am depressed or not?

Near the beginning of this course, you learned how to take a depression symptoms test that enables you to test yourself for different symptoms for depression, and thereby determine whether you meet the criteria for clinical depression or not.

So, first things first: how do you know you're depressed or whether you're not dealing with depression anymore?

A good place to start is by taking the test for depression, which tests for depression and anxiety symptoms, as well as depression physical symptoms. By doing so, you'll see whether you meet the criteria for clinical depression or not.

But you've got to do more than just this.

Remember, when we established the criteria for success for getting rid of depression, one of the criteria for success was being able to comfortably and honestly see and accept yourself as no longer being depressed.

This means to "successfully complete" being free of depression, you've got to be able to see yourself in this positive light, and no longer be thinking thoughts like "I am so depressed right now".

In other words, you've got to comfortable and honestly be able to see yourself as free of depression.

But when is it the "right time" to see yourself as depression-free?

Learn the answer in this lesson.

Additional Lecture Notes:

It's important to appreciate that there is no "right" time to see and accept yourself as being free of depression. For example, you don't have to wait 90 days before you can do this.

Instead, you can do this as soon as you can comfortably and honestly adopt this view of yourself.

For example, if you did this course in one day, and you spent a bunch of time with the Daily Happiness Tool, Feel Good Tool, Positive Thinking Tool, and Confidence and Success Tool, and the next morning you woke up feeling fantastic, and happier than ever...

Then guess what? In this scenario, you could comfortably and honestly accept yourself as no longer being depressed after only 1 day of taking action.

(And even though this might seem incredible to you to be able to do this, it is certainly possible, since the most important factor for getting rid of depression is to improve your thinking, and you have access to tools that help you do this very, very fast.)

Bottom line, the moral of this story is this: see yourself as no longer being depressed as soon as you can comfortably and honestly accept this, and without delay.

Furthermore, regardless of whether you have eliminated depression yet or not, it's important that you always see yourself, your situation, and your progress in the most comfortable light that your mind can comfortably and honestly accept.

For example, take a look at these views of yourself and your situation:

I'm depressed, and I can't do anything about that (this is the worst possible view to adopt, because you're focusing on your situation in a negative way, and you're not recognizing your capabilities)

I am taking action to get rid of depression, and I know I can become depression free (this already a much more positive view of yourself and your situation that helps you feel better)

I am feeling better and better and less depressed each day, with every action I take, and I know that I'll soon no longer be depressed at all and be consistently happy (this is even stronger)

I am not depressed, and I feel happy and enjoy life (even stronger; when you can adopt this view, you've already achieved what you set out to achieve

I am completely depression free, and I feel happier than ever, and I know that I can consistently feel this way by taking action to think and live in positive ways each day (even stronger)

The overall lesson is to always see yourself and your situation in the most positive light that your mind can comfortably and honestly accept.

So from this moment, under no circumstances see yourself as someone who is depressed, which is a huge, common, mistake most depressed people make. (It's certainly understandable why so many people do this, but it's still not good at all, since it only make you feel worse about yourself and your situation, and makes you feel more depressed.)

Instead, at the very least, see yourself as someone who is taking action to get rid of depression, and someone who can become depression free. (This view naturally helps you feel better about yourself, helps you feel more self confident, and all of this naturally helps you eliminate depression faster and easier.)

If you've done all the lessons in the course up to this point, then you already know that you can comfortably and honestly accept this positive view of yourself.

So from this point forward, it's simply a matter of taking action to improve your thinking & lifestyle, with the clear, actionable steps you've identified, until you can comfortably and honestly accept yourself as being no longer depressed, and instead being happy.

And once you do that, you can enjoy knowing without a doubt that you've achieved exactly what you've set out to achieve, since you've met your criteria for success.

Assignment: Using the Confidence & Success Tool, write down the most positive view of yourself and your situation that you can comfortably and honestly accept in the last step of the tool. Keep "upgrading" this perception as you take action to get rid of depression, until you get to the point where you can comfortably and honestly accept yourself as no longer being depressed anymore.
