A short introduction to This domain and hosting how-to course and to Tony.B your course instructor.
What Domain Registrars and what they do, a brief description of their purpose.
We learn that anyone or any company can be a bridge between available domain names and the organization that polices who actually owns them. And we all need to register a domain name.
So it's a good idea to go with a domain registrar that has some history and a good reputation.
And here's that link to Wiki https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Domain_name_registrar
What is Hosting a quick overview
Once you have a domain name you'll need somewhere to store the files associated with that domain name.
That's where hosting comes in.
We all need hosting because we'll be storing our website files on the servers of the hosting company.
That ensures when someone types in our web address into their browsers, the hosting company serves up out new domain and any files associated with it.
There are literally thousands of places you can buy your domain from online as mentioned in the previous lesson.
There are some big brand names like Namecheap and Godaddy that we'll take a look at.
We discuss how to find a reputable domain registrar and where to get discounts from namecheap at
where you can find them and how to choose them in this lesson and by the end of lesson you'll be able to buy your own domain names whenever you need one quickly and easily.
By the end of this lesson you will able to:
Understand the many uses of TLDs and extensions. How to pick a 'top level domain' that represents your brand plus which new extensions can be beneficial and which can damage your brand and you need to stay away from.
The link to the Country TDL page at wikipedia is attached in resources.
Doing a little research on your host is best practice, look to see if your hosting provider ticks your required boxes.
After this short tutorial you'll know
3 good reasons why it's a good idea to keep the roles of domain registrars and domain hosts separate.
It's no fun having your website held to ransom. Which can happen if you have domain name and hosting on a 'buy one get the other free' deal!
Take a look at the small print.. OR better still contact them via chat to find out exactly what (if anything) you will be tied to.
Here is where we go through:
Getting a new domain name registered
Once we've found a suitable domain name to buy it's only going to take a minute of so to register that domain to our account. It's a simple but essential step.
As with the rest of the video's Tony walks you through step by step through the processes mentioned above.
I pay for the services with paypal, though you can use a credit or debit card.
Here is where we go through:
Buying a new hosting account with Bluehost and Namecheap.
Once we've found a suitable domain name to buy it's time to get a hosting account to connect it t.o.
We also know now that's it's not such a great idea to have hosting and domain name at the same place. So here's another simple but essential step.
Tony walks you through step by step through the processes mentioned above.
Again I use paypal, though you can use a credit or debit card.
Connecting DNS To Hosting also know as Changing Nameservers
We go back to where we purchased our domain name, in our case namecheap
Trere we change our nameservers to a "custom setup' .. The usual configuration is
ns1.hostinname.com
ns2.hostinname.com
Some domain names have more than 2 nameservers some may have 3 or 4 like:
ns1.hostinname.com
ns2.hostinname.com
ns3.hostinname.com
ns4hostinname.com
Once we have changed our name servers to a custom set your website files will be 'served up' from your new domain.. in our case www.setupwp.uk will become active as a live web address that can be found on the internet.
Well done - you've completed registering a domain name and getting a hosting account.
