Ruth Amos (born 1989) started in business when she was 16 with her idea, The StairSteady. The StairSteady is an aid to enable people with limited mobility to use their stairs confidently and safely. The StairSteady was designed as part of her GCSE resistant materials project as a response to a teacher's challenge to design an aid to enable people with limited mobility to use their stairs. The company StairSteady Ltd was set up in 2006 to protect the product and bring it to market which was achieved in 2008 while Ruth was studying for her A-levels.
In 2011 Ruth set up the Drols, a toy company,encouraging children to learn through play. In 2013 Ruth became the Managing Director of the Eliot Kennedy Steelworks Academy, looking after a small team of dedicated staff and subcontractors.
Ruth is also a consultant and advisor, the most recent of which was for the department of education and industry called 'your life' which launched in 2015. Your Life is a three-year campaign to ensure young adults in the UK have the maths and science skills needed to succeed in the current competitive global economy. It looks to inspire young people, to study maths and physics as a gateway into wide-ranging careers whilst also triggering employers to recruit and retain this talent. Ruth was part of the founding team, lead by Chairwomen Edwina Dunn of DunnHumby, that devised the first campaign strategy, advised the delivery team and helped source corporate partners to take it foreward.
Ruth is an Enterprise UK ambassador, was Young Entrepreneurs (runner up) 2006, Derbyshire Young Achiever 2006 and Intel Science and Engineering Fair finalist 2008, a Cragrats ambassador, and enterprise Role model in South Yorkshire and speak at events across the country promoting engineering and enterprise. In 2008 she attended the Intel ISEF science and engineering fair in Atlanta representing the UK in mechanical Engineering. Ruth is the youngest person ever to be on Management Today's 35 women under 35 (she appeared in their 2009 list), and winner of the women of the Future 'young star' Award. In May 2010 Ruth was on the Yorkshire 42 under 42 and in September of that year she was recognised as a 'women of achievement' by the Women of the Year Foundation. In September 2011 Ruth was the Network of Aspiring Women's Young entrepreneur 2011 and Overall winner. In November Ruth was recognised as a Striding Out Future 100 Young Social Entrepreneur 2011. Ruth Speaks as part of Room 54 ltd and speaks at educational, corporate and TEDx events.
