Course Description

Have you ever had those Kodak moments or funny home videos that you were so excited to immortalize? Most of us figure saving these precious moments on our computers will keep them with us forever. Nobody ever thinks that one day that hard drive could crash. This is a surprisingly common occurrence.

Did you know 20% of hard drives fail in the first 4 years, and that this percentage steadily increases every year? All hard drives fail at some point, usually with little or no warning. In an instant, you can lose years of memories that you can never share with the next generation.

You know you're supposed to backup your hard drive, and you've heard about the unlimited storage space available on the cloud, but where do you start?

With this beginner's course, saving all your priceless memories on the cloud couldn't be more easy. This course helps you to backup all of your photos and videos to the cloud in a few easy steps, so that no matter what happens to your computer or even your home, your memories will be safe and easily accessible.

I have been in the computer industry for over 10 years. I have seen people lose thousands of photos and videos needlessly. You don't have to be one of those unfortunate souls. Sign up for this beginner's course and learn the quick steps you can take to save the memories that are dear to you. Backing up videos and photos is as easy as A-B-C. So, why bother paying for this course, when the program you use is free? Well, not everyone is techno-savvy, and that's OK. With this beginner's course you can save the time and frustration of trying to pin down kids who don't have the time or patience to teach you. Your videos and photos are priceless, why depend on someone else to back them up for you?

Plus, the problem solving skills you learn can be applied to other computer issues.

With this course you will:

Section 1: Introduction
01:47

Learn about me, Andrew Morgan, and what this wacky course is all about (it’s about backing up your photos on the cloud).

Article

Here are a few notes about working with courses on Udemy.

02:43

The program we will be installing today is called Google+ Auto Backup. It comes with Picasa, another Google Service, but we won’t be using Picasa, we will only focus on Google+ Auto Backup

  • What is Google+ Auto Backup?
  • What do you want backed up?
  • Where are those files?
  • You will need to complete this whole process for each computer or device you want backed up.

About Picasa, from Google (optional): http://bit.ly/1ykdaLh

Section 2: Install and Configure
01:45

Make sure you know where all your photos are before backing up.

  • Do you have all the photos you need on one computer?
  • Which folders do you want to backup
  • Are there any folders you do not want to backup?
05:06

You can download Google+ Auto Backup here: http://bit.ly/1xsUsRv

06:45

We cover the installation process for Google+ Auto Backup, and what a Google Account is, and how to use it.

  • What is a Google Account?
  • Figure out if you have a Google account.
  • Create a new Google Account (if you don't have one already): http://bit.ly/1vRXmNG
  • Sign in to your Google account.
  • Learn how to enable your Google Account for Google Photos
04:53

The settings during the installation process are important, and affect which pictures and videos get backed-up.

  • Pick which folders will be backed up.
  • How to backup your cell phone (mobile phone) when you plug it into your computer.
  • Don’t bother with the advanced settings, nothing much in there.
01:32

Google will give you free cloud backup and unlimited storage for your photos and videos , but at a price. Learn if you can live will the file size restrictions, and what to do if you want to upgrade at a later date.

  • Full size images – any amount of pixels (px), up to 100 Megabytes (MB) per file.
  • Full size video – Any length, any resolution.
  • Learn about how Google calculates your account storage - you start with 15 Gigabytes (GB).
  • Standard size photos – 2048 Pixels (px) on the longest side, and Standard size videos
  • Warning: “If you run out of storage, we'll automatically switch to backing up at standard size.” meaning you will lose the higher resolution version on the cloud, but it will stay the same on your computer.
  • What counts?
    1. Pictures over 2048 pixels (px) on the longest side.
    2. Videos longer than 15 minutes.
    3. Videos with a resolution larger than 1080p.
  • Use the Full size option if you have a lot of videos.
  • If something is too big, it just won’t be backed up, so there is no danger of deletion.
Section 3: Edits and Changes
09:41

Starting the backup is easy, but may take awhile.

  • When you click Start backup, the backup process will start, and continue forever until you stop it.
  • The first scan of your computer could take hours or even days, depending on how many pictures and videos you have.
  • You can change the settings at any time.
  • Your Google Storage (must be logged in): http://bit.ly/1zqaYPl
05:09

Learn what the cloud is and how to see your photos on the cloud.

  • Your photos, on the cloud (must be logged in to your Google Account to see them): http://bit.ly/12BYBWj
  • The cloud is a group of computers that pool resources to create a distributed network that is faster and less prone to failure, since the same data is on several computers.
  • You can access the webpage where your pictures and videos are, by clicking on the Google+ Auto Backup icon in the system tray.
  • Learn to navigate the website.
03:55

Google+ Auto Backup comes with some great basic photo editing tools, even some that work automatically!

  • Explore the features of Google’s photo editing service.
  • Understand what Auto Enhance does, and if you want it.
  • Download individual or sets of photos.
  • Share individual or sets of photos.
  • Deleting a photo online does not delete it on your computer.

There is a new button appears called Manage Devices, which allows you to configure how your cell (mobile) phone ‘s pictures are backed up.

01:48

This is only here for reference; it will undo everything you’ve done in this course. I’m only telling you in case you want to stop using the service.

  • Windows: Click the Start menu, click All Programs, click Google+ Auto Backup, click Uninstall.
  • Mac: Open the Finder, click Applications, find Google+ Auto BAckup, click and drag it to the Trash.
  • Does not delete photos on your computer, or on the cloud, just stops new photos and videos from being backed up.
07:52
