Ask yourself: Do I want to be happy? Is what I value most deeply a sense of peace and joy that is with me continuously, regardless of my life’s circumstances?
If you answered “yes” to one or both of these questions, then ask yourself: Am I willing to invest two dollars along with 30 minutes of my time per day, for thirty days, in order to increase my base level of peace, joy and happiness?
If not, then this class is probably not for you.
If so, then welcome! I greatly look forward to supporting you on this journey …
Structure Of The Course
This course is divided into ten lessons, each of which is practiced (with naturally emerging variations) for three days – making for a total course length of thirty days. It can be repeated, from start to finish, as many times as you’d like. Each time will reveal new insights, lines of exploration, and depth of release into naturally effortless peace and joy.
In each lesson, there are things to do; things to understand; and an invitation to rest as Pure Awareness: enjoying the space of aware “being.” There also is optional homework – things for you to contemplate, explore and experiment with as you move through your day. We could think of this process, in its entirety, as something like a beautiful dance between “doing” and “being” – between applying intelligent effort, and then releasing and relaxing deeply.
The attitude I encourage is one of openness, curiosity and play. Which isn’t to say that the task at hand is a frivolous one. Quite the contrary! It’s just that, in the big picture, success is guaranteed – so why not have fun along the way?
Required equipment: (1) your precious human body-mind; (2) a handheld timer of some sort; and (3) a notebook and a pen.
Here you'll be introduced to the overall structure of the course, and offered suggestions on how to proceed most skillfully through the lessons, to maximize their benefit.
Lesson One: Beliefs About Happiness
This first lesson will be devoted to clarifying your desire for happiness, by exploring your beliefs about what the source of happiness is. Upon completion of this lesson, you will understand more clearly the beliefs that you hold about what is going to make you happy.
After the "doing" and "understanding" portions of the lesson, you'll be invited to simply rest as Awareness: a truly delicious way to be!
Optional Homework: How to deepen and expand this exploration, via a simple fun inquiry that you can do throughout your day, pretty much any time you feel interested.
For the task of introspection (i.e. “looking within”) it’s a settled, relaxed and gently focused mind that serves as our tool, akin to the scientists’ microscope or telescope. Here you're supported in fully grokking the possibility and radical implications of your human body-mind becoming a scientific instrument.
Learn how to cultivate concentration by following the breath. The capacity to remain gently focused is a skill that will later be applied to remaining tuned into and aligned with unconditioned happiness -- so it's very useful!
As you'll notice, each lesson ends with a period of resting as Open Awareness. This is the thread drawn through all ten lessons. It's there right at the start, goes with you through the middle portions, and -- like a good friend -- is there also at the end.
Optional Homework: How to honor your interest and enthusiasm – and notice that when you’re engaged in an activity for which you have genuine passion, concentration flows naturally.
Imagine walking around in your backyard on a moonless night. You’re carrying a flashlight – the only light available – that you shine here and there ... Thus begins a very fun thought experiment, which will help you understand what "turning the light around" is all about.
A guided meditation which will allow you to directly experience "turning the light around," i.e. tuning into Awareness rather than the objects of Awareness.
And Optional Homework: Encouragement to expand the visual experiment that you learned in this lesson, to include sounds and tactile sensations.
Here you'll learn the "cat and mouse" experiment, which is great fun! In the course of playing with this, you'll experience directly an aspect of yourself that is naturally watchful and awake.
Two deep inquiries are offered here: Can Awareness be located in the same way that a chair or flower or thought or internal image can be located? And which is more "real" -- objects which come and go, or unchanging Awareness?
And Optional Homework: An invitation to be curious about your "true identity," and to pay close attention to your use of the words "I" and "mine."
Here you'll be guided through the process of moving "upstream" from the name of an object, to perceiving it "nakedly" (i.e. prior to the name), and finally to resting as Awareness as the source of the perception.
Here you'll be presented with a truly provocative and revolutionary hypothesis, which is the key to the door of unconditioned Happiness.
And Optional Homework: Encouragement to continue to play with the inquiries and exercises that you've been introduced to -- but only when your interest is genuine.
Wouldn't it be nice to not feel completely lost in or taken over by difficult emotions? Here you'll learn how to remain free in the face of any and all emotional energy. How is this possible? By recognizing and knowingly abiding in the Awareness within which the emotions arise and dissolve.
An invitation to consider the possibility that Awareness is universal, shared, transpersonal – i.e. unlimited and without boundaries -- rather than individual, separate, personal.
And Optional Homework: As the lessons that you've learned begin quite naturally to permeate your thoughts, words and actions, you'll be inspired to deepen the inquiry.
What do reflections in a mirror and characters in a movie have in common? Here you'll explore the answer to this question via a fun experiment with a mirror -- which will support you in understanding the relationship between perceptions and Awareness.
Awareness is the "true substance" of any and all phenomena!
And Optional Homework: Considering all phenomena -- including your human body and mind -- as no more real than the reflections in a mirror.
Does Awareness share the limits of the body or mind? Here you'll be guided, in a step-wise fashion, through this powerful investigation.
A guided meditation around the question: Who am I without any problems to solve?
And Optional Homework: Further encouragement to deepen your contact with limitless and problem-free Awareness.
Though Awareness has no phenomenal attributes, glimpses of Awareness can have various non-phenomenal “flavors.” Here you'll be introduced to some of these flavors.
A guided meditation, in which you're supported in the process of tuning into various flavors of Awareness -- and recognizing its indestructible nature.
And Optional Homework: While Awareness is beyond “one” or “many” – it can appear in these various “flavors.” Here you're encouraged to explore this paradox more deeply
In this exercise you'll directly experience how perceived external objects as well as visualized images always arise within Awareness. They never stand alone, but rather are simultaneous -- fully permeated -- with Awareness.
An invitation to deepen your understanding, via the ocean/waves and mirror/reflections metaphors. Or: In the same way that dreamt characters are never separate from the dreaming-mind, phenomena are never separate from Awareness.
And Optional Homework: How resting in/as Awareness is of spontaneous benefit to all (apparent) others. Your final "assignment" will simply be to notice how knowingly abiding as Awareness translates effortlessly into friendliness, compassion, kindness and response-ability -- and to enjoy this fully!
I’ve been exploring yoga and meditation, in various forms, for quite some time. It’s always fresh and new! And there's also been an incremental opening to deeper and deeper levels of insight, via a series of glimpses into unconditional peace, joy and freedom. Now, there’s a thread of happiness and contentment that’s available more-or-less 24/7. And my teachers have encouraged me to begin to share this insight, in service to those who value powerful tools to touch more deeply the peace and joy that is our shared birthright. This course is such an offering, and my wish is that it be of great benefit to many.
