Let's be honest here, if you're taking this course then getting in the right mindset is something that you've been thinking about. Once the Mindset & Goal Setting Module is complete students will have confirmed that they are ready to start the entrepreneurial journey. They will have a task management application set up and use it for setting goals that will be trackable. They will be able to use this application to be accountable to themselves on achieving actionable goals that they need to accomplish to move forward.
This is one of my personal favorites in the business development process! You will now know what you will be fighting for! I cannot stress enough how critical this is in the development process. At the conclusion of this module, student will be able to identify their top 3 strengths, 3 passions, and finally have an idea that they can turn into a revenue generating business. The business that fabricates is usually one that is at the intersection of ones strengths and passions. It is on the difficult days that the student must remember why they are doing what they are doing, because sacrifices will be made in order to make an idea a business.
Now that we are in the right mindset, accountable, and have an idea worth fighting for, at the conclusion of this module, we will be able to identify the size of the market as well as if it is a valid one. The last thing that we would want to do is have an idea that does not have a serviceable market worth going after. Being able to identify the size of the opportunity, regardless of the cause is critical for developing later strategies to target your customers.
If you've made it this far, then this is where the real fun begins. At the conclusion of this module students will now be masters at creating not just a business plan, but an executive summary as well. They will understand when to create this document and how in depth they need to go depending on their business needs. What type of business each student is creating will dictate when and how detailed the business plan needs to be. They will learn the importance of creating a summary for their business which they will revisit as the business matures.
Although not my personal favorite section of starting a business, that doesn't mean that it's not important. Finishing this section will show students the differences between what type of incorporations make sense for their business. It will show them how to identify a great location and frankly if the location is even a critical piece of the success of the business. Another critical piece learned in this module is also understanding state and local regulations pertaining to their business operations. There are many things that can be overlooked at this phase, but with the completion of this module, that shouldn't be the case.
Who doesn't love naming stuff? I know I do! identifying a name for a business can be a critical step in creating ones brand. Finishing this section means that students will have a name for their business and have identified as to whether the domain is available for use online or if it is Trademarked. It's not the end of the world if it is taken online, but it's better to know this ahead of time.
Well if we are Trademarking stuff then it's probably pretty awesome. Completing this lecture will allow students to have a trademarked business! Surprisingly, it gets better! Not only will a student's business have a Trademark if they so choose, but they will have a logo as well. Now a student can finally make a sticker for their new "baby" and at least put it on their laptop to showcase to the world!
We are progressing nicely at this point and are finally creating a brand worth marketing. At this point students are now well versed in how to brand their product. Students will understand the basics of design and how to apply popular trends to their business. Creating a strong brand is not easy, the last thing we want to do is choose a color that makes no sense for our market. A major lesson will be learned at this point regarding web design and basic needs of a business. Students will know when to hire a web developer and when not to, and how important that is to saving money and time.
Well I can tell you this much, my story is as vintage and as real as they come. I didn't expect for the startup bug to bite me and for it to consume my life. But, I wouldn't change a thing, because there is one constant in my life and that constant is change.
Not all that long ago, I was doing the corporate grind and frankly didn't really have a problem with it. However, there is a fundamental difference between not having a problem with something and doing something because you truly love it.
It was that self revelation that allowed me to find my other self which has propelled me to start a few businesses and truly live the struggle of learning what mistakes not to make. Most people would wish to never fall flat on their face, but I seek failure at this point, because I know that if I fail fast then I will learn and hopefully never do it again.
