Empathy, according to Wikipedia, is the capacity to understand or feel what another person is experiencing from within the other person's frame of reference, i.e. the capacity to place oneself in another's position. Basically, you are able to feel exactly what someone else is feeling, which can be really confusing at times. And draining as well.

What happens as a result of being an empath or HSP is that we become highly sensitive to any disturbances in our fields of energy. Whenever negative energies, or unnecessary drama, or arguments happen, we are instantly disturbed by it, causing us to lose energy faster than others. It's like we have a faster leak in our energy sources than other individuals do.

Everything affects us more. We are so much more sensitive to everything in our environments, external or internal.

Some Techniques To Deal With Energy Vampires

Energy vampires are individuals who suck the energy out of you, either deliberately or unintentionally. They are the kind of people, who after spending time with, you feel tired, drained, and needing a nap. You don't know why, because a lot of times, your engagements with these people are pleasant, and even fun. 

Energy vampires are a landmine for empaths and HSPs. Not only are energy vampires draining towards all beings, but they are especially harmful to empaths and HSPs who are able to give away their energies so easily and who are so sensitive to everything going on around them.

I highly recommend staying away from any energy vampires if possible.

What Is An Energy Vampire?

The unfortunate thing is that energy vampires are everywhere. They might be a close family member, or a parent, or a friend, or a colleague, or just random strangers on the street or a subway car.

The fortunate thing is that energy vampires are really easy to spot. In one or two meetings with them, you will be able to realize that you've encountered an energy vampire. Like I said, you will meet up with these people with so much energy, and you will notice that after a meeting with them, you will be so drained that you barely have energy to lift an arm.

I recommend you make a list of energy vampires in your life right now that you encounter on a daily basis. We don't necessarily need to eliminate them completely from our lives, but we need to be aware of them, so we can prepare for their draining nature.

Where Can We Find Energy Vampires?

I think energy management should be a priority for all of us, but especially if we are empaths or HSPs. We should constantly be thinking about it all the time. 

We should constantly be asking ourselves questions like:

What is draining my energy right now? What is my energy level like right now? Is there someone who is causing me to feel drained and depleted? Can I avoid that person or situation forever or for the time being?

Our energies can be depleted not only by unpleasant and draining people, but also situations, drama, work, emotions, and so much more.

It is our prerogative to be constantly alert and aware of energy ebbs and flows.

Other Ways Your Energy Can Get Depleted

In the next four lectures, I will be chatting about the four main ways I conserve and protect my energy from all of the drain on it daily. The four methods are physical, shutters method, mental, and distraction mode. 

I'll expand on each of these in the next few lectures, but I want to say that this is definitely not an exclusive list of all the ways to protect our energies and I would be delighted to hear from you on other means of protecting our energies.

Four Techniques To Manage Our Energies

This is the easiest and fastest way of avoiding energy depletion and one of my favourite ways, because it can be executed without any special training.

In most cases, energy drain is happening in a specific area or situation. I could also call this method, 'The Avoidance Method' or 'The Walkaway Method.' 

Seriously though, the best way to avoid an energy drain is to avoid the person or situation completely, or to walk away from the situation/person if you can't avoid it completely.

I have noticed that after I avoid or walkaway a couple of times, the person or situation doesn't bother me anymore. It is the best way to keep our energies and motivations high.

Protect Your Energy Through Physical Means

The Shutters Method is something I developed when I was much younger and dealing with a bunch of trauma in all formats. I was too young to avoid or walk away from such situations. I didn't have the money or wherewithal to run away. So I used the Shutters method to close myself off mentally from all the vagaries and pain of life.

Basically, in this method, I use visualization to imagine that I have a strong solid shutter that is protecting my inside world and energies from everything out there.

My mother has commented on it as something happens and all of a sudden I'm shut off from the entire world, even though I might be physically present. This technique has been really useful to me in the past and I still use it on a regular basis. 

If you have ever imagined yourself to be somewhere else rather than here, you can imagine yourself with shutters protecting you from this cruel crazy world.

Protect Your Energy Through The Shutters Method

Because our energies are present in our bodies and our minds, one of the main ways we can protect our energies is by forming a sort of physical shield around our bodies. 

It is pretty similar to the Shutters method, but in this method, we are creating a shield on the outside of our body, rather than on our heart or mind.

I use this method when I am surrounded by a lot of varying energies in a crowd of people, and I don't know if I need to protect myself or not. This way, I keep my energy inside of me in case there is an energy vampire around, or if something untoward happens.

This technique is more about playing a good offence, rather than always working on defence. 

Protect Your Energy Through Mental Means

This technique is especially useful again when we are in a crowd of people that we don't know, especially in a situation like a subway car or any crowded public place. In this method, we use noise-cancelling headphones or a book or a laptop to distract ourselves from everything around us.

If we are unaware of the madness that is going on around us, mostly it keeps us protected and safe. 

For me, my headphones are the best investment I have ever made in energy management. It is absolutely crucial to me. If you are not a music fan, then you can either listen to audiobooks, or you can just use plain earplugs to protect yourself from the noise and madness around you.

Protect Your Energy Through Distraction Mode

In most cases, we should be lucky enough to recognize an energy vampire and walk away from them right away or soon enough. They are highly easy to identify and there are very few things we can do if they are going to be around us all the time. 

It is their natural inclination to suck energy from everyone around them, because perhaps they don't have enough of their own, or they are trying to fill a void. Whatever it might be, we have a essential need to walk away from them to protect ourselves.

The longer we stay around an energy vampire, the more energy they will drain from us. No matter how often we recharge ourselves with sugar, or sleep, they will keep on taking and taking as if we are an unlimited source of power to them. 

Walk away. Just walk away.

Recognize And Walk Away From Energy Vampires

Sometimes though, we are unable to walk away from an energy vampire right away, because they are a boss, or a parent, or a child. In those cases, be extremely careful of spending time with these people.

Not only should you use the four methods I have described above incessantly, but you should also remember that time in these cases can you be your friend or enemy. The more time you spend with these people, the more drained you will be.

Finish your business with these people asap. Also, try to hang out with them once you've completed all of your important tasks, or work on your important creative projects. 

When You Can't Walk Away From An Energy Vampire?

As I said in Lecture 12, headphones are seriously an empaths' best friend. I never go anywhere without mine. You never know when you might encounter a situation where you need to shut yourself off from something that is happening on the outside that could potentially drain you.

Headphones can protect us physically by keeping all the noise away from us, but also it gives us an opportunity to become an observer. No one ever bothers with an observer in my opinion. They are too boring.

When an energy vampire is draining your energy or a situation is depleting you, I think we need to remember that none of this is personal. This is all about the situation we are in.

Unfortunately, or fortunately, we were born as individuals who are drained and depleted easier. It causes us to have to be more cautious than others.

I know people who can spend hours and hours in the company of an energy vampire and still have enough energy to go do their work. I admire and am jealous of them. But that's life.

None of this is personal. It's just life.
