What Will I Learn?
  • By the time you finish this course, you will be able to throw your hair up into a braided chignon, a half-Dutch accent braid into a twisted bun, a French tuck, or pretty much whatever else strikes your fancy. You can mimic runway looks, do your own hairstyles for special events, and help your friends get ready for their big nights.

  • To achieve these looks, you need bobby pins, small and large hair rubber bands, a brush, and two mirrors for checking on your progress.

Braids and creative updos are everywhere these days, and according to the New York Times, they are "woven to each personality."

This course will teach you how to weave the look that's right for you. It will teach you how to create original head-turning hairstyles by combining simple techniques.

By watching fifteen short instructional videos, you'll learn:

  • Accent braids
  • French braids
  • Dutch braids
  • Herringbone braids
  • Chignons
  • Pinned Updos

But most importantly, you'll learn how to combine them to create infinite possibilities for a personalized daily look.

You can jump around in the course to find the looks you want to learn, or you can take it step-by-step and learn all the basics. Depending on how much you choose to practice along with each video, the course will probably take you between two and four hours.

Who is the target audience?
  • This course is for anyone who wants to change their look or hang up their blow dryer. If you have hair, you can learn to braid and twist it!

How to Braid + Accent Braids
3 Lectures 03:59

In this short video, you'll learn how to braid. Can you already braid behind your head? Feel free to skip this one!

Basic Braids Video

Guess what you can do now! Already! One of my favorite looks!

I love accent braids. Come love them with me. Check out this video to see how to do a simple backward angled accent braid that could go back into a ponytail, bun, or other updo. Don't know any other updos to put it into? Well, be sure you keep up with the course!

These techniques are just so handy. They go with everything. They look good messy or tight, for work or for play. In this video, you'll learn the basic bun, the braided bun, the rope bun and how to twist a bunch of pieces together into one twisty bun I call the "set of twists."

French Braids and what to do with them
4 Lectures 14:59

I finally learned to French braid my own hair when I arrived in college and realized my mom wasn't going to be doing it for me anytime soon. All it takes is willpower and a little instruction. Watch this video for the instruction, but you'll have to provide the willpower. I bet if you try it three times you'll get it down!

French Braid Video

The French tuck is a lovely and under-used hairstyle these days. Chances are you'll have a one-of-a-kind updo on any given day if you wear this simple style. Watch this video to learn how to French braid a little more loosely and tuck the end up underneath the braid.

What would I do without the lace style? I use it all the time, and so will you, after learning how to do it from this video. You can lace a French braid, a Dutch braid (more on that to come) or a rope braid (yeah, more coming on that too). Basically it takes half the work but it looks as good or better. And people don't know how you did it. So watch this video and make your life a little easier!

The ability to angle a braid from anywhere on your head is quite handy. Once you can play with angles, you give yourself a dozen more options every morning. You might pull a braid back from your right temple or your left, angle it across the back of your head, or even angle it from the nape of your neck up toward the crown. All of which is to say, don't miss this video!

Dutch Braids and what to do with them
3 Lectures 12:21

I think the Dutch braid is a bit prettier than the French braid, but I don't see it much on the street. Which is kind of cool. You'll be a trend-setter. Plus, with the pulled-out look shown at the end of this video, you'll know how all those Pinterest shots of big fat braids are being achieved. The pulled-out look (which also works great with the herringbone braid - don't worry, it's coming!) is way easier than I thought it would be. Watch the video and find out for yourself!

I include this in part to spark your imagination. You know how to Dutch. You know how to lace. You know how to do a braided bun and an accent braid. So you could have made up this look yourself! Assuming of course, that you are practicing as you go! (Ahem, PRACTICE AS YOU GO! YOU CAN DO IT!) Watch this video and remember that even if you pause now in the course, you could create dozens of new looks just based on what you've learned so far.

Herringbones and what to do with them
2 Lectures 06:19

Too bad for this look "bone" somehow got involved in the name. Though, I hear it widely referred to as "fishtail" as well. Ack. Nevertheless, it is really a gorgeous look, and quite easy. Try it for yourself with the help of this video. Then go see a few more ways to wear it here.

Herringbone Braid Video

The great thing about the French Herringbone is it involves two main strands instead of three (insert huge sigh of relief here). What, you mean you've mastered the French braid so fully by now that you don't feel relieved? You wish there were four strands? Too bad, the French Herringbone really is very easy and doable. Check out the video.

Rope Braids and what to do with them

The first few times I saw rope braids I thought they must be close to impossible. But it turns out a couple of simple twists and you've got one. I don't know why the hair doesn't just untwist and fall out but it doesn't! This look is probably only going to take you a few minutes to learn so be sure to give it a whirl. Ropes are fun accents and of course, you already know they make an easy bun. This video is just over a minute, so there's no excuse not to watch it!

Basic Rope Video

It looks hard but remember, the great thing about lace is that you only have to do half the work of French. And the great thing about a rope is it has just two strands not three. So really, this look makes things as simple as possible! Watch the video and practice a bit, you'll be lace roping in no time (and no, that has nothing to do with arts and crafts or cattle).

This look, which I've never seen on anyone else, has been the most popular on my blog thedailybraid.blogspot.com. It received hundreds of hits in its first couple of days online. The thing is, it's beautiful and it takes only minutes and the absolute easiest of techniques to master (a flip through and the basic braid). You must not miss this video. It will set you up for your next date, interview, or day of lounging around the house feeling extra gorgeous.

Now that you can do the braided chignon, you might as well diversify and try this look too. Because it's just a tad easier and just as pretty. I made this one up, and you'll probably be the first person in your state to wear it.
