This is one of the coolest sounding mutes, either stem in or stem out. Hear it and learn the difference between the two. The mute I'm using in the vid is a bubble mute made by Jo-Ral. The tune I played is Dizzy Gillespie's "Birk's Works," a minor 12-bar blues in concert F minor(trumpet G minor).

Note: the first part of this is a quasi-non-technical discussion about some aspects of waves in trumpets. I conclude with a discussion about my understanding of how this impacts MY thought on why I like the horns I play. You could take the same information and arrive at a totally different conclusion, based on your needs physically and musically. That is totally fine and to be expected. In the meantime I hope this offers a little food for thought. Peace. Nick drozdoff

This clip is intended for two audiences. First are trumpeters viewing my online lessons site. Second are students involved with Science Olympiad. As a judge for S.O. I encounter many metal tube chimes, flutes and strings. There is remarkably little variety. Only two times has anyone brought in a brasswind. I hope this little clip might inspire some studetns co consider it.

This is a ten minute discussion intended both for my Online Lessons page and the Science Olympiad page. It deals with overtones/timbre as applied to brass winds. However the simple theory underpinning it applies to all instruments. I only allude to Fourier Synthesis. A link will appear on the Science Olympiad page for further study.

This is my take on the studies used by Vince Chicowiscz. My teachers in graduate school were former students of his. I never studied with Vince personally, so this is second hand information - MY TAKE on this approach to tone development. You really need to continue your research on this matter, and not consider this discussion the end point for your learning on this matter.

In this second installment of the Rafael Mendez special entitled "The Trumpet," Mendez begins with discussing the origins of the trumpet and then plays an exceptional rendition of the third movement of the Haydn trumpet concerto. For those of you familiar with this piece it will be a breath of fresh air to hear Mendez's version. This was the first piece written for the keyed trumpet, and Haydn wrote this concerto to really showcase this brand new instrument. Unlike other classical trumpet performances of this piece where the trumpet sounds like a part of the orchestra, Mendez electrifies the show by playing with such vigor and virtuosity. I think Mendez is doing Haydn a great favor by playing this piece not as part of an orchestra, but as a trumpet player. Haydn intended this to showcase the trumpet, and Mr. Mendez does just that.
