This course will help you gain a good understanding of the basics of abstract art. Besides an interesting journey through the history and development of the abstract movement you'll be taught a clear step by step practical method that involves moving gradually from a figurative drawing to a unique abstract painting. Anniek developed and teaches these techniques to students in art classes in London and overseas. This is the first time her courses are taught online. So wherever you're based, now you can join in and learn in your own time and space. Anniek has a positive approach and gently guides you through the course programme. Before you know it you've created a beautiful painting of your own!
In this introduction video you'll hear a brief overview of the course Discover Abstract Painting Part 1 from realism to abstraction. Anniek Verholt, a professional artist, artistic therapist, art educator and your tutor on this course explains the journey you are about to embark on.
In small steps you will be guided from the figurative and representational reality all the way into abstraction where the focus is on form, composition, colour and line.
The online classroom provides an extended learning space for students. In this closed group students have the opportunity to connect, share their progress, ask/answer questions and offer/receive feedback.
This lecture shines a light on abstract painting, what it might entail and how it is experienced by famous artists.
We'll have a close look at a definition and meaning of abstract art. What is abstract art really? We break this question down and offer some insights and a way of understanding this painting style.
In this lecture we look at a visual overview of abstract art and get to know some of the most inspiring abstract works of all times.
What aspects or examples of abstract painting do you feel most drawn to? In this lecture we look at personal taste and differences as a method to come closer to defining your own preferred style.
Now let’s get ready for some creativity. In this lecture you get practical advice on how to prepare your creative space. Where will you paint? What do you need? Where and how can you feel most comfortable?
A list of art materials is provided so that you can make a start with the first part of your creative studies.
We look at an inspiring artist 'Piet Mondrian' and use his step by step approach as an example to highlight the gradual but powerful journey from realism to abstraction.
We will look at selecting a suitable subject for this study. We focus on a still-life and use a variety of forms.
This is a first creative exercise as part of a warm up. A blind drawing of your still life is a way to move closer to the mindset needed to paint and understand abstract art. This can be fun and liberating. A demo of a blind drawing is included.
A two minute sketch is the second creative exercise still part of the warm up. A way to look at the composition and connection of your objects. A demo of a two minute sketch is included.
The ten minute sketch is now easier to create after the two warm up exercises have been completed. You will now have a better understanding of the dimensions and variety of the objects. A demo of a ten minute sketch has been included.
This lecture covers the next step of your drawing, refining. This allows you to continue to work on your previous observational drawing and achieve a result you are happy with. A demo of the final drawing process has been included.
We try and find an answer to the questions 'what is the essence of my chosen subject?'.
This lecture will guide through the process of gradually abstracting your drawing yet retaining the essence of your subject.
We pay extra attention to composition. What is a composition and how can you use it?
This lecture describes the creative and personal input that can enhance your drawing.
This lecture offers a list of painting materials that are needed for the next stage of this course.
This lecture gives an overview of what colours maybe used, how to mix colour and how colour can change your painting.
This lecture explores the use of paint and brushes before starting your abstract painting.
This lecture describes the process of your abstract painting, the final stage of your creative study. You will introduce colour and depth to your abstract composition.
This lecture looks at the importance of pausing and reflecting during a painting process.
At this point you have finished your painting and we acknowledge that.
This lecture explores other ways you can use this exact method to creating your own abstract paintings.
Thank you very much for taking part in the creative course, Discover Abstract Painting Part 1.
Discover abstract painting Part 2 will take you further into the world of abstract painting. Instead of using a figurative subject to work from we will work with a more experimental approach using our senses and imagination...resulting in dynamic and fully abstract paintings.
