In this course, you will be learning a powerful complex problem solving framework known as Design Thinking and a new approach to Business Innovation based on insights and understanding of human needs.
The concept of Design Thinking has been around for decades, but in the past ten years, IDEO, a design consultancy firm, has championed the process as an alternative to a purely analytical approach to problem-solving.
A complex business problem is a multi-dimensional and difficult problem to solve because of incomplete, contradictory, and changing requirements that are often hard to recognize. More over, complex problems often cut across social, cultural, political and environmental issues affecting diverse groups of people and has no clear boundaries or solution template to follow.
Design Thinking offers a new approach to tackle complex problem and create innovative solutions:
You will learn the principles, process and methods of Design Thinking and new ways of looking at problems and finding solutions. This new design approach to Innovation will enrich your organization with greater knowledge and skills for the future.

This lecture gives an overview of Design Thinking as a problem solving framework and approach to Innovation inspired by understanding human needs.
Design Thinking focuses on End-users. Knowing their needs and challenges by observation, empathy, interview and interacting with them by using prototypes or simulation. Design Thinking aims to create innovation that meet users' needs, technically feasible and financially viable for the company.
In this lecture, the important Design Thinking process is defined and illustrated. The process is important as it empowers and helps the design team to focus on specific activities together. However, as the process is dynamic and interactive, the stages may vary depends on the issues uncovered in the process. Iteration and refinement is an important element in Design Thinking process to get closer to the optimal solutions.
Understanding the principles of Design Thinking is important and useful. Principles timeless and generic for application to specific situations and the five principles covered here will be useful as a guide to complex problem solving and innovation.
In this lecture, we cover the Five principles of Innovation. Innovation can be incremental or radical. Innovation is about mindsets, skills, process and culture of an organization. Leaders in organization ought to develop innovation as a strategic capability for long-term success of the organization.
In this lecture session, we will look at a Design Innovation case study of a hospital and healthcare design approach for solving Ageing population in Singapore.
This final lecture we want to look at the importance of developing personal, group and organizational capability in innovation. Creative confidence is a valuable energy resource that we can learn how to tap into it to enable innovation to be driven by design rather than by chance. With personal breakthrough in Creative Confidence and team works, self-organizing teams in an organization are great assets for creating future success in innovation.
