In this section, the course objectives will be outlined, and learning expectations will be provided.
In this section, we will begin to understand the differences between risks and threats, and how they relate to each other. From there, we will examine what are referred to as, "countries of concern" and what causes them to be classified as such. Finally, we will examine the reasons for even studying a course such as this.
After completion of this module, you will have an understanding of tradecraft methodologies and tactics that can be employed against you by trained Intelligence personnel. You will gain knowledge of how foreign actors could approach you, and attempt to exploit you for information that you possess or have access to.
We will examine various potential threat groups and/or actors such as Spies, Terror groups, Organized Crime, and will learn about Kidnapping and the inclusion of ransom demands. Also covered will be lists of countries to consider when traveling with regard to this subject matter, typical tactics used by these groups, specific nomenclature and case studies based on historical events.
In this section, areas covering prevention and awareness, the "OODA loop", application of logic and deduction and steps to consider before you leave for your trip will be addressed in detail. Once complete, you will be equipped to apply common sense to an uncommon situation.
After this module, you will be armed with strategies, tactics and training and knowledge of resources available to you while in a foreign country. We will also build on aspects of the previous module where you will be able to recognize Indications and Warnings (I&W), and be better able to "listen to your gut".
Throughout the course, you will be shown a variety of potential threats and risks that could present themselves to the unprepared traveler, and you will be able to understand how and why you could be targeted by foreign adversaries, how to recognize basic tradecraft, and how to employ your own tradecraft as a way of ensuring your defense and safety while abroad.
