The instructor introduces himself, explaining his education, experience, and certifications. He provides the students an overview of the outcomes they can expect from the course.
The instructor provides students with a brief introduction to each segment of the course.
Even if you are not a PM, if you aspire to become an IT/cybersecurity leader, you need to communicate effectively. The lack of the ability to communicate effectively on IT/cybersecurity projects increases the chances that those projects will fail.
The instructor begins with a story, based on actual events, that illustrates emotional intelligence. Myers-Briggs Type Indicators describe characteristics that relate to communications styles. These indicators impact the characters in the story and IT/cybersecurity professionals at large. Researchers associate leadership and extroversion; however, most IT/cybersecurity professionals are introverts. Fortunately, this does not prevent IT/Cybersecurity professionals from developing leadership skills.
Continuation of Section 1.
Each part of the brain contributes to communications differently. The reptilian, limbic, and neocortex process different information types at different speeds. You will understand the areas in your brain that processes impulses, emotions, and higher thought.
The parts of the brain enable four brain phases: Instinct, Emotions, Intellect, and Intuition. Processing instinctual fear is challenging. Our emotions enable us to label our feelings so we can examine them and express them to others. We express our emotions both verbally and non-verbally. Our intellect enables us to respond and behave rationally. Our intuition enables us to make quick judgments based on our instinctual, emotional, and intellectual experiences

Continuation of Section 2.
Besides understanding brain operations and brain phases, it is important to understand different thought types. The REB Model includes types of thought, adding the depth required for processing meaning.
This segment begins with a business narrative that challenges you to imagine yourself in an intense communications situation. It integrates the brain phases and the REB Model with the communications cycle, producing a complex architecture for transmitting the meaning from within you to your communications partner, and then understanding the how your communications partner transmits the meaning within her back to you through feedback.
IT and cybersecurity professionals invest heavily in technical skills, but soft skills are also essential for success in the workplace and for the success of IT/cybersecurity projects and programs. The Talk Continuum demonstrates how communications progresses from self-talk to dialogue, enabling the effective exchange of information between communications partners.
This segment begins with the conclusion of the challenging communications situation introduced earlier. The instructor then provides the Keys to Emotionally Intelligent Communications in the form of a modified Deming Cycle: Plan–Do–Don’t–Check–Act. The instructor concludes with a summary of Part 1 of this course.
The instructor provides an overview of stakeholder engagement, leadership, social styles, and mindful credibility.
The instructor explains the stakeholder engagement concepts needed for interacting with and involving others. You will explore the management of change and of stakeholder expectations.
You will explore leadership from various perspectives, enabling you to form your own point of view concerning leadership.
This is a story about an IT leader who faced challenging leadership situations with an internal stakeholder. The instructor based the story on actual events.
Social styles are the observable behaviors that identify a person’s preferences. You will learn to recognize the characteristics of the Analytical, Driver, Amiable, and Expressive social styles, understanding their own style and the styles of others.
People with personal credibility have earned the belief, trust, and confidence of others. They mindfully know their own behavioral tendencies and they are adept at practicing versatility, becoming mindfully credible. Versatility requires becoming comfortable with discomfort. You will learn to use Social Styles and emotionally intelligent communications to be versatile, mindfully building credibility with their team and other stakeholders.
Continuation of Section 1.
The instructor provides an explanation of social styles and personal credibility within the context of The Incredible Craig business fable.
The instructor provides a holistic summary of communications, emotional intelligence, leadership, and personal interaction concepts that can improve the IT/cybersecurity professional’s leadership and communications skills.
Description
Cyber Expression is a unique leadership course tailored to meet the special needs of IT and cybersecurity professionals.
According to Harvard University, “Emotional intelligence—the ability to, for instance, understand your effect on others and manage yourself accordingly—accounts for nearly 90 percent of what moves people up the ladder when IQ and technical skills are roughly similar.”
According to TechGenix(.)com, “IT professionals who can work in the direction of developing a combination of technical, business, and soft skills are likely to get preference over others who are solely limed to tech expertise.”
CIO(.)com quoted the CIO of Ford Motor Company who said, “Not starting out as a pure technologist helped me leading with relationships, building trust, and seeking to understand first, and then come with the solution next.”
This course helps IT and cybersecurity professionals understand how to apply the soft skills of emotionally intelligent leadership and communications to transform themselves into effective leaders. IT and cybersecurity professionals will receive the knowledge required to adapt their leadership behavior and their communications styles to manage relationships, build trust, and influence people from diverse backgrounds.
Purpose
IT and cybersecurity professionals face a leadership dilemma. Research shows two-thirds of information technologists are introverted. However, researchers have also found that extroversion is the factor most strongly related to leadership.
I created this course to provide IT and cybersecurity professionals a resource to help them adapt their communications and leadership styles and become effective leaders, overcoming this dilemma.
Why Cyber Expression?
While leading a large IT and cybersecurity program for a US government agency, I found that most of my team leaders had little or no leadership training. They were excellent technologists, and as a result, their previous managers promoted them into leadership positions. However, the technical skills that got them promoted were not the soft skills they needed to succeed as leaders. As a result, they suffered in their positions and their projects were prone to failure.
The Target Audience
This course is perfect for technical and non-technical professionals. IT and cybersecurity professionals who have worked hard to gain technical experience, education, and certifications, but need leadership and communications soft skills to improve their performance will enjoy and appreciate this course. It provides the soft skills training to complement their hard, technical knowledge, the soft skills needed to advance their careers and to succeed in leadership positions.
This course also can help non-technical professionals increase their emotional intelligence and communications soft skills, improving their collaboration and leadership ability.
Cyber Expression is Unique
Most leadership courses provide generic, one-size-fits-all training. Cyber Expression is different because I tailored it for the unique needs and interests of IT and cybersecurity professionals.
I have over 33 years of experience in IT and cybersecurity, and I use IT and cybersecurity anecdotes and stories to help you understand communications and leadership concepts.
I started my career as an analyst and as a developer. Now, I am a retired US Air Force communications and information systems officer with experience managing several multimillion-dollar IT and cybersecurity programs for several US government agencies. Along the way, earned elite certifications - I am one of few people worldwide who have PMP, PgMP, and CISSP certifications. Also, along the way, I learned to overcome my communications and leadership challenges, my anxiety and lack of confidence, to lead effective and successful teams. I developed this course, Cyber Expression, to help you do the same.
