This course is a mix of many features, tools, and ideas that are combined together to master custom Windows image that works on all desktops & notebooks you have.

We will create a virtual Windows machine (Windows 7, 8.1, or 10) using either Hyper-V or VirtualBox, whatever is convenient for you. Then, we will modify the image, add files to it, install applications, updates, and whatever modifications we want. Respectively we will capture that Windows machine using ImageX to extract a WIM file with all these modifications.

Next, we will see how we can use this extracted WIM file to create a bootable Windows image, moving to use an XML file that we can create to automate installing Windows almost without any user interaction.

Section 1: Introduction

A quick overview on our course, we will cover main topics, and the tools we are going to use

Section 2: Preparing The Reference Machine

What is Virtualization and why it's useful? Why we need it here? We will also enable and configure Hyper-V on Windows 8.1 and install Windows on it.


You have Windows 7 or you don't prefer Hyper-V? We will see how we can create virtual machines using VirtualBox here.


We will install some software on the virtual machine, add some folders, and prepare it for the capture.

Section 3: Capturing Windows Image

We will see what is WinPE, and link to where you can create it from scratch (direct download available), and see how to boot to it


This is the real part, we will see how we can capture our customized image while booting in WinPE, and save our captured image in a WIM file.


While the virtual machine is offline, we will move our WIM file to the physical machine, merge it to the proper location, and then create a bootable ISO image (no shareware app is needed, all is FREE).

Section 4: Automating Windows Installation

We will see an XML answer file, discover how it's written (no coding details), and see how it's constructed to sections


With no coding skills needed, we will see how to generate an XML file with all the settings we want, and what modifications we better do on the file before saving it.


Now, we have that file, how we can add it to our image in order to allow Windows to read from it? Let's see.
