In it's basic form, the modern novel can be separated into certain parts which help to clarify the structure and aid the author in creating the story.
The most common elements agreed upon by all writers are the theme, plot, descriptions, and characters and dialogue. Although all of the parts are needed to create a great novel, it's the characters the reader identifies with and remember far after the book is finished.
The author should pay great attention to character creation - it's one of the biggest reasons that your readers will abandon your book. In this lecture I outline the importance of character creation and give guidelines for the new author.
It's an old maxim that an author should base his stories on what he knows. I'm not sure about this - what about science fiction fantasy novels, for example?
That said, the one thing we really do need to know about in great depth are our characters. We need to know them inside out, and the only way to do this is to analyse them. The question is: How can we analyse something that doesn't even exist yet? The lecture explains the process of creating character profiles.
The character arc is really a process affecting some of the people inhabiting your imaginary story-world. Not all characters undergo it, but the ones that do need special treatment by the author.
In this lecture I define the character arc and it's relationship to the Story Arc.
If you listed all of the characters in any modern novel, the number would be quite impressive. However, there are relatively few main characters the people we care about and follow through the story. The other types have one purpose - to move the story forward or to create situations that enable the hero or heroine to take action. What differentiates the different types of characters?
Characterization represents the methods employed to inform the reader about your character's personality.
The purpose of this lecture is to give you a variety of tools for describing your main characters.
Characters don't just appear in a novel, but just like real people, they have to be introduced to the reader in a variety of ways. In this lecture I discuss some of the techniques authors use.
