If you are part of hiring and training in an organization...if you want to make your organization a place that new employees can thrive in...if you are looking for ways to improve your company's or non-profit's bottom line, by positively impacting retention and reducing errors and safety incidents, then this is your class.
Hi, I'm Katy Caselli and I am excited to meet you! I am a learning and development expert and Industrial/Organizational Psychologist, and I work with people just like you to excel with impactful, engaging and effective training programs. They impact the bottom line because they change performance for the better.
In this course I give you a path for creating an orientation that leads students to success. I reveal the secrets of course design that boosts the confidence of your new hires, and introduce your new hires to the unique culture of your organization.
By the end of this course, you will have completed a plan with my experienced guidance to start your own world class New Employee Orientation! So let's get started!
Hi all! I am a 17 year veteran of the Learning Development field and an Industrial/Organizational Psychologist. I've have set up and redesigned orientation programs for four global corporations and have really enjoyed working closely with students and instructors. The best fun is making the program meet the needs of the new hires while surprising them with a memorable, engaging classroom experience.
I'm here to help you to make your orientation program the best that it can be, with sessions that both provide cultural immersion as well as logistical support to give your new hires what they need to get up to speed and on the path of success fast.
I'm also a gigantic learner myself and I hope you are too. I have worked to perfect my knowledge in my field over the last 17 years, and I have proven success in human performance improvement, showing the impact of training and performing accurate needs assessment, and I have had a blast in the classroom using impactful and engaging training techniques.
Be sure to download the plan in Lecture 3, so that you can take notes and form a plan that works for your organization and your unique situation. Thanks for joining!
What is so critical about an effective, timely and engaging new hire orientation?
This plan has been made to prompt you to take what you learned and apply it after each lesson so that you can develop an effective orientation program.
You may access it as a PDF document print...
Here is a secret: Your organization's new hires will get an orientation to the company whether or not you offer them a formal course or session. Unfortunately, generally when people learn without instruction, it is tough, slow going, and often they learn the hard way, through mistakes. A structured orientation takes away some of the mystery: The new hire can then decide (hopefully) that they made the right choice in joining the company.
Now is your opportunity to think through all the stages a person will need to learn their job, and decide the scope of your orientation project.
There are many ways in which we can present a cohesive, new hire orientation...
Question: What if we are a small organization and we only hire a few people a month, or a handful per year?
Or- What if we have a huge hiring push ahead and will need to offer orientation to hundreds? Or in multiple locations?
Let's plan what students will be able to do when they walk out of your orientation class. This is more important information than how much time the total program will take, so we will leave that question until a later lecture.
For now, put your self in the shoes of the new employee...
Make sure and thank employees for choosing your company and have a little gift or even a note signed by team members. This welcome could include lunch or breakfast, with their leader or a high level employee. Some companies have balloons for participants, others ceremoniously roll out a red carpet, and others make a showing with top leadership coming to shake hands. Whichever method you chose...
Plan to construct new hire orientation to pull from two key pools of information:
You will want new hires to leave with a clear idea of the company culture, heritage and values. You will also want ....
OK, now this part may be in the scope of your project, or just being thought of and penciled in as a future expansion of orientation. Which ever is in your plan, check out three types of department training methods.
This is adapted from the draft book: Building Giants-The Secrets to Transforming Your Workforce through Effective Training coming soon from Building Giants Press.
Getting support for your orientation is critical for several reasons. For one, you will need leaders to give up their new hires to training on their first day. They may be used to taking them the minute they officially enter the company, or starting them on any day of the week they want....
Have you heard of this acronym?
A=Attainable (also actionable)
R=Relevant (also realistic)
Try setting SMART objectives...
Please! Deliver your students from too many wildly dull, and wordy PowerPoint Slides! In instructor led training there are much better ways! In Webcast Learning there are better ways! Even in eLearning there are better ways!
The idea is to substitute activity for too many words where possible. And as far as possible. You are only limited by your imagination.
One term I like to use for training that consists of too many words is "the firehose effect...."

It is time to estimate how long orientation will take!

Key points to make sure you've got it!
I just wanted to share with you that of all the ways I have learned about my profession, by far what has helped the most is feedback. Feedback is a training professional, and instructor's best friend.
Now that you have the basics of how to put together a world-class orientation program- you might be wondering what else you could learn to develop your skills in other areas. For example, you may be just getting your feet wet in instructional design, needs assessment, and proving your value as a Learning and Development or Human Resource professional. Keep learning! Other classes in the series are coming, so check back often!
This class was partially adapted from Building Giants: The Secrets to Transforming Your Workforce Through Effective Training-Coming Soon!
Congratulations on finishing this class! Don't forget to print your certificate of completion for your records, and check back for additions!
