Worship Revolution - What is Free Form Worship?

“I want you to read about Moses”. I had no idea what I was being led into.

I am Charlie. I was on the road years ago with the Christian Rock Band Wisdom. We hadn’t been touring long when we had an audition with a major record label, and that's when it happened. What happened? Something that I was not expecting; God Spoke to my heart - "you are a worshiper."

He Was clearly Calling me to learn to worship. The Message was loud and clear. I had no idea how much it would absolutely change me.

I played with the band until we came back home and settled in, but my life and music direction leaned hard into worship. I was asked to lead worship after serving on a worship team for 6 years. Like many worship leaders, I gained experience as time went by. I would attend conferences to learn more. As my hunger for God and worshiping Him grew with the passage of time, I also came to the place where I began to cry out for more.

It was in 2014 that The Spirit of God told me to read about Moses. I was about to learn and understand depths about worship that I yearned for deep in my heart. I had read the story about Moses several times, but I had never thought of him as a serious and dedicated worshiper. But, it's right there in scripture. There is much for the worshiper to learn from his life, but we will focus on this episode. Check this out:

Exodus 34:5-8 Now the Lord descended in the cloud and stood with him there, and Proclaimed The Name of The Lord. And The Lord Passed before him and Proclaimed, The Lord, The Lord God, Merciful and Gracious Longsuffering, and Abounding in Goodness and Truth Keeping Mercy for thousands Forgiving iniquity and transgression and sin by no means clearing the guilty, visiting the iniquity of the fathers upon the children and the children’s children to the third and the fourth generation.

We know that it's a worship service because Moses ''made haste and bowed his head toward the earth, and worshiped." God Modeled this Proclaiming The Name of The Lord' for him. Notice this Proclaiming Is done by declaring Himself in His Beautiful Characteristics:

Lord

God

Merciful

Gracious

Longsuffering

Abounding in Goodness

Truth

Keeping Mercy

Forgiving

Not clearing the guilty

Now look at Moses with me a little later in Deuteronomy 31:30 and 32:3

Then Moses spoke in the hearing of all the assembly of Israel

For I proclaim The Name of The Lord.

Ascribe greatness to our God.

He is The Rock, His work Is perfect

For all His Ways are Justice

A God of Truth and without injustice;

Righteous and Upright Is He.

Notice, this is very similar to What God Had Said in Exodus 34. He even says the same words that God said - I proclaim The Name of The Lord. Do you see that Moses has learned to proclaim The Name of The Lord after seeing God Model it for him?

So we see Moses worshiping God in His Awesome Characteristics and Attributes.

But we don’t see this template and type of worship only in the life of Moses. Look at Psalm 18:2,

The Lord is my Rock and my Fortress and my Deliverer;

My God, my Strength, in Whom I will trust;

My Shield and The Horn of my salvation, my Stronghold.

I will call upon The Lord, Who is Worthy to be praised.

Notice there are at least 10 Attributes proclaimed here.

Let’s also look at a couple more references from Paul the apostle:

Now to The King Eternal Immortal Invisible, to God Who Alone Is Wise be Honor and Glory forever and ever. Amen. 1 Timothy 1:17

He Who Is The Blessed and Only Potentate, The King of kings and Lord of lords Who Alone Has Immortality Dwelling in unapproachable Light Whom no man has seen or can see to Whom be Honor and Everlasting Power. Amen. 1 Timothy 6:15-16

There are easily a dozen Characteristics/Attributes here that Proclaim our Great and Magnificent God, and there is much more in the scriptures that we are constantly reading.

launch into discussions about worship and The Attributes of God? They discuss the same content that God led me into and taught. They discuss the amazing benefits of worshiping God in His Characteristics and Attributes and how they greatly affect the believer and the life of the believer.

Notice that it is in the theological environment, and not in the worship environment.

Do you, worshiper, worship leader, think that maybe we should look more closely at this approach, look more closely at this template to worship? The template that God Himself showed Moses and included in scripture? Do you think that we should make a study of of Proclaiming His Greatness, His Great Name by calling out His Characteristics/Attributes and how God Himself Demonstrated it? ? Do you think that we should bring this scripturally based template of worship into the worship environment? How could we ignore or forego this phenomenal content?

Worship has amazing benefits

We should worship God - no matter what is happening to us or where we are in life, simply because He Is Worthy.

But worship has incredible built in benefits. One of them is this - a healthy undistracted worship routine provides a sure avenue of spiritual sensitivity to His Voice. If we desire to be led by Him so that His Kingdom comes, and His Will is done on earth, then we should be worshipers. What kind of advantage can we receive when we listen to, and allow The One Who Knows the end from the beginning, to lead us through life? To lead us through the big and small decisions?

And you know what? With Free Form Worship, I can worship - with or without a worship song playing. Naming God in His Many and Amazing Characteristics has resulted in the transforming of how I think of Him. I now see Him in a much broader and fascinating way and sometimes when I have a few free minutes during my day, calling out His Characteristics and Attributes provides a mini devotion pondering Him in His Greatness.

I'm not saying that the things that I incorporated as a younger worship leader were wrong , but Free Form Worship is a variation to the common established worship approach. It is scriptural, it's very do-able and simple to understand, but has profound transformational value. It has the ability to bring someone wanting more depth in their worship life to a new and different level of understanding and competency. I know, because this has been my experience in the last 10 years.
