In this chapter, we introduce wolves as a species and as a canid among other Canidae. We see how wolves are classified from a biological perspective. We’ll explore some physical characteristics. And we will mention about different types of wolves and different subspecies of wolves. All of this is important to get oriented, to give a frame and create a common ground where to meet, that is: what a wolf is? What is this extraordinary animal that we will discover and understand through this course?
Wolves are social animals. They invest everything in their family, in maintaining cohesion within the family members, and in raising the pups. In this chapter, we’ll explore the importance of the breeding pair, the parents, mummy wolf and daddy wolf. We will invest an important time in deconstructing the term Alpha, that is obsolete, it carries some misunderstandings about wolves and dogs, and does not apply to the true role of the parent wolves. Then we’ll see some important aspects of wolves communication. Communication is so strictly related to the sociality of wolves (of course), and to the protection of a territory that represents the home of a family, the identity of a pack.
We are all passionate about pups, right? Here we see the early life of wolves, how they develop. In the first year of age wolves go through a very impressive process of growth and transformation, and the scientific knowledge available about all of those stages is abundant. So we will see in quite a detailed manner what happens, step by step, in the life of wolves from birth to adulthood. MIND: along the way you will find a TABLE with some details. That is part of the materials I've created for the students of this course. Please download it, it will help you during the process.
We need to talk about wolves on the hunt, not really to describe how great they are like hunters, but to highlight a very underestimated aspects in wolves life, that is, how hard and dangerous can be for wolves to hunt. They literally can risk their life. To reduce that risk, they need to make important considerations. They need to make some choices and they need to be cohesive and cooperative. In all of that, if a family pack have puppies, part of adults’ attention needs also to be given to puppies, which makes the hunting even harder in certain cases. We will also mention how wolves on the hunt are important for some other species that also feed on what wolves capture on their hunt. And this allows us to start to wear "special lenses", ecological lenses, through which we can see wolves on the hunt as an important ecological event, vital not just for wolves themselves but for other animals present in their same ecosystem.
This chapter is crucial. We well see how wolves, as well as other predators, play a critical role in the ecosystem. Their absence may generate an environment unbalanced in some respects, resulting in an unhealthy ecosystem. Conversely, if wolves are present, or are reintroduced in an ecosystem, that environment will benefit of wolves presence in so many ways that ultimately it will thrive. This is an extremely important aspect relating to wolves, that doesn’t just describe the beauty of this animal but also gives the proportion of its importance on a broader spectrum.
Humans have been in conflict and competition with wolves for thousands of years, and that conflict became drastic on the last three centuries. Here we explore some historical reasons behind the conflict, some underlying causes, some beliefs that have increased, where not determined, that conflict. Therefore, this chapter is tough. First, because there are numbers, records and we need to go through that because that gives the appropriate proportion of an issue. And secondly, because those numbers are incredibly high and very biased, that is, the number of people attacked and been victims of wolves is ridiculous compared to the numbers of wolves being victims of humans.
If you are taking this course with your kids, I suggest taking time to accompany them through the upcoming lectures and to discuss with them the contents. If you are a teacher or an educator I hope you can find a way to bring this specific aspect into your teaching. And for everybody else I hope that the contents of this chapter clarify some important points and maybe motivates you in supporting wolves, in whatever way that may be expressed in your life.
This chapter is where we re-build trust. We explore some aspects relating to the conservation of wolves, some solutions that are already being applied, and we’ll see some example of how different type of professionals find different ways to connect with wolves and to support them. The range is really wide. There are many good projects and inspired people out there that are doing important researches, studies, and actions to understand more and more wolves and to support them in any possible way. I've been very inspired by many of the, and I hope that can be inspiring for you too. See you inside.
Here we steer toward another dimension of the significance of Wolves into human perception. That is, Wolf as a symbolic animal, as a totem, and in its spiritual value. In fact, wolves are powerful animals not just in the wild, but also from a spiritual perspective. WOLF has been seen as a guide and as a symbol of protection in different cultures and particularly among native Americans.
Some students may be exited about this perspective, some other less. Which is ok, we need to be open mind and be inclusive to each other. I believe that, to some degree, what we explore here reconnects to all of the other aspects and can be seen as an integral part of the process of understanding wolves and nature. Using this type of lens, and for those who may feel more emphatic with this level of understanding, we'll also see how we can connect with the spirit level of WOLF (and other animals) as we have inherited by Native Americas and other traditions.
- At this Point! -
Dear Students: here there are some gifts for you.
These are some of my favourite footages. I believe that you, at this point, got on the Wolf frequency.
Those videos will enforce your perception and understanding. They also represent an opportunity to see "in action" many aspects that we have studied through the course. I watched, and watched, again and again, those and other videos since years, and I keep learning.
While studying, researching, travelling, reading, experiencing, the dots are connecting. The more time goes by, the more I believe wolves are extraordinary animals. At this point, I hope you feel the same.
Enjoy the vision!
