This unique take on a classic exercise is designed for giving the student a basic level of upper body strength. The press up movement is essential for building a greater level of punching power. A traditional stance movement is added on to the press up, which allows the student to develop a more functional foundation whilst building their upper body strength simultaneously
By completing this fitness test the student can determine they have reached the basic level of fitness preparing them to train in the Sil Lim Tao system. Testing allows the student to gauge their basic fitness and gain an understanding of their capability. Students are able to track their progress as they steadily improve a will know when they are ready to continue to the next phase of their training.
It’s important for the student to self check their movements by referring back to the lesson material to see if the technique, positioning match the demonstrations. You should recognize strength improving and ensure everything is up to standard before moving on with the course.
These hand exercises are essential in developing correct positioning. Each exercise will give you a basic understanding of the dynamic hand positions found in the Sil Lim Tao. (palms are used rather than fist in to hard areas of the body to avoid injury danger injury. One hand attacks as the other guards.
This movement is used to attack both sides of the neck, generating power from the moving goat stance. At all times the student should be aware of the positioning of both hands. The front hand carrying out the chop. The rear hand guarding, ready to support and respond as needed later
The student will work both the hands and feet together. A good understanding of the basics of stance work, weight bearing and balancing will enhance the student’s ability to move. Allowing the student to progress easily. The student must be able to carry their own weight efficiently around to make the movement functional in combat. This is the principle of “Know Yourself”.
This exercise builds upon the previous lessons, building on the fundamental principles of the hand and feet moving together to generate power. A punching movement is added in this exercise to ensure that the student is familiar with moving and attacking in the 70:30 positions.
This exercise further ensures that the student’s hand and feet coordination is strengthened by the addition of a second kicking exercise. The front kick teaches the student how to make use of the heel when attacking and further ensures that the student understands the standard 70:30 position in the Sil Lim Tao.
Static kicking ensures that the student develops greater balance, coordination and technique necessary to develop kicking power. Each exercise enables the student to possess the basic understanding needed to develop each movement used in Sil Lim tao. Static position training will allow the student to break down movements to a more simplified version to develop strength and techniq
This exercise ensures that the student develops the balance and coordination needed to use the front kick in the standard 70:30 position. This exercise further explains how to move and practice kicking correctly when making contact with the heavy bag. The use of the heavy bag and practicing in the 70:30 position enables the student to practice kicking with resistance both technique, coordination and weight transfer efficiently.
This movement ensures that the student develops the correct foot positioning and balance needed to make the round kick functional. How to practice the round kick with the use of the heavy bag is explained once again to ensure that the student develops clean technique and agility to move around a solid target.
This exercise also helps to develop the correct line positioning and coordination necessary to use the sidekick effectively. The sidekick is practiced in the 70:30 position once again to develop clean kicking technique and coordination. The use of a heavy bag is demonstrated once more to help the student to understand how to effectively move and deliver the kick against a solid target.
The final static kicking exercise ensures that the student develops the balance and correct positioning needed to use the chop kick effectively. As a highly versatile kick in the Sil Lim Tao system, the heavy bag is used to allow the student the confidence in delivering a powerful chop kick against a solid target.
This exercise covers the application of the basic blocking and chopping exercises. The application reinforces the importance of training the wrist to be strong. The importance of applying the static form positions together with basic stepping in earlier lessons is essential to performing the application in combat.
This exercise covers the use of the triple punch and “anti grab” movements. The hands and feet must move simultaneously to cover distance for the triple punch attack. A good understanding of how to “break out” of grabbing attacks, using the cutting movement from the Sil Lim Tao form is essential.
This exercise covers the entirety of the Sil Lim Tao form. A fundamental understanding of hand positioning and correct technique in each section of the form is needed to link each position to combat use. The practitioner should consistently practice the entirety of the form to ensure that a good understanding of posture, hand positioning and body mechanics is maintained. Constant practice ensures that the student is able to apply all techniques seen in previous lessons to a good standard. Take some time to practice; I will see you on the energy drill lesson.

Clean technique & correct positioning, will allow the student to further understand the purpose of each movement. This is a crucial checkpoint for the student to ensure there form & application is good. If it is, then they will be able to move on and improve much more easily.
Wall bag exercises are essential to enable the student to develop power against a solid target. This type of training can also be used to develop the student’s distance control as well as conditioning the fists to build greater wrist strength and punching power. The sectioned areas of the wall bag are essential in developing accuracy in the Sil Lim Tao system.
This exercise develops the student’s static punching power and focuses on the use of the rolling motion of the triple punch. The sectioned areas of the wall bag simulate different areas of the body and allow the student to target and deliver multiple punches to the bag quickly.
