This lecture provides an introduction to the course content and to the presenters while explaining why this learning is important in the current situation.
On completion of this lecture, you will have an understanding of what we mean by climate breakdown and its consequences.
At the end of this lecture, you will understand what we mean by collective action and why this is important to address climate breakdown.
This lecture provides an introduction to the second section of the course where we will look at some of the changes you can make to reduce your impact on the climate.
This lecture will help you understand the travel and transport options available to you to minimise the impact of climate breakdown.
This lecture looks at the impact of the food we eat on the climate.
In this lecture you will learn about the things you can do in your home to minimise the emissions of greenhouse gases.
At the end of this lecture, you will know about some of the impacts on our climate of desire to consume goods.
This lecture introduces the idea of "products as services" and the circular economy as alternatives ways of gaining access to the goods we desire.
This lecture introduces you to the impact of waste. It explains how to carry out a simple audit of the waste you create.
In this lecture we put the results of your waste audit into the context of waste generated overall.
When you have completed this lecture, you will know about the waste hierarchy and how you can apply it to your individual and household waste.
For those of you with access to a garden, this lecture gives you some idea of the action you can take to reduce the impact of the garden on climate breakdown and can store carbon. We expand this to talk about "rewilding" on a landscape scale.
On completion of this lecture you will understand the concept of a carbon footprint and how it can help you measure your impact on the climate.
This lecture will illustrate the output from a carbon footprint calculation and provide some ideas of further action you can take to reduce your impact on the climate.
The conclusion to the course and ideas for other study.
This leads on from our first course, "What do we mean by Climate Breakdown?". This course - “What can we do about Climate Breakdown?” - provides a reminder about the causes of climate breakdown and what it means but goes on to explain why we need to take action in our homes and in our everyday lives. Climate breakdown is one of the defining issues of our time and if we do not take action to avoid the consequences, the outcome for our ability to survive on the planet is in question. Through our work in environmental education over the past 20 years, we have realised that few people know much about this subject and that there is a lack of awareness about the urgency of the situation. We need to take action now and this course explains what action is required. We also highlight that the action we can take individually has to be matched by the businesses and organisations we interact with and by relevant changes in government policy.
By the end of the course you will understand how we, as individuals, can make a difference to the serious issue of climate breakdown but that everyone needs to act! We have all contributed to this problem and now need to take steps to resolve it.
