Geographical Information System (GIS) is comprising of computer hardware, software and applications that captures, edit, analyze, manipulate and visualize geographic data.
GIS on web provide a new paradigm for how people from anywhere can access and use geographic information to take the meaningful decision, plan and execute operations. WebGIS enabled people use GIS maps on their desktops, tablets, and smartphones to perform sophisticated range of activities.
In this course we will be learning basics of GIS and web mapping application development. We will start with a brief introduction on What is GIS and then quickly move to Web Application Development which will cover right from installing GIS mapping libraries and database and gradually move towards developing our first web mapping application using simple HTML, Javascript and CSS.
Install geoserver on windows by installing java 11, unzip geoserver, set geoserver home and data directories, start service, and access localhost:8080/geoserver to view layers in the open layer platform.
Learn to style GeoServer layers using the CSS method by installing the CSS plugin, creating a CSS style, applying it to a layer like India states, and configuring labeling.
Combine multiple shapefile layers in Geoserver by creating a layer group, add India states and districts, generate bounds, and publish as a single WMS service for efficient rendering.
Enhance a web mapping app by grouping base and overlay layers with collapse and expand, and display real-time lat/long plus a dynamic scale bar.
Explore live search in a web GIS app with an expanding search box, threshold typing after three characters, and dynamic results that pan the map to states or districts.
Learn to edit geospatial features on the web by adding, modifying, and deleting polygons, roads, and more with layer selection, snapping, and GeoServer WFS transactions.
Develop a solid GIS career foundation through targeted education and hands-on experience in GIS and web technologies, focusing on ArcGIS and QGIS, cartography, spatial analysis, database management, and programming.
