  • How Light Bounces1:53

    Whether you know it or not light bounces off walls in a room exactly like sound does when you hear an echo. In this section i show you the differences between light bouncing off a white wall compared to being absorbed by a black wall. The result will astonish you and understanding this effect will change the way you position yourself and your lights forever.

  • How to Shape and Control your Light2:46

    When you position a light in front of you to hit your face you probably do not realize that the light is going everywhere. I demonstrate how you can easily cut light so your main light only hits your face. We do not want your face light (key Light as we say in the industry) to hit the background. This will make your face bright but your background dark achieving separation in your image.

  • Eliminate Light Spill from Unflattering Colors1:55

    If you point a standard white (5500k) light at a green piece of fabric the result will be green light bouncing back and giving your skin tone an unflattering look. This same concept is true regarding the clothing you wear, the couch in your room or even the desk beneath you. Being aware of your surroundings and how your lights are bouncing off them will help you eliminate any unflattering light spilling into your image.

    I use our trusty lego set to demonstrate how we use all of the fundamentals of light to craft a cinematic image for our streams and youtube videos. I show you how they all tie together and why we need to be conscious of each when we light our own setups.


    We control light by cutting the key light off from the background and we create separation by adding a background light but block it from hitting our subject. We black out the floor so no light is bouncing back and spilling on our background. Finally we turn on a backlight to separate our subject from the background creating depth and an overall cinematic image.
