In this section i show you the differences between light bouncing off a white wall compared to being absorbed by a black wall. When you position a light in front of you to hit your face you probably do not realize that the light is going everywhere. I demonstrate how you can easily cut light so your main light only hits your face. We do not want your face light (key Light as we say in the industry) to hit the background. This will make your face bright but your background dark achieving separation in your image.
If you point a standard white (5500k) light at a green piece of fabric the result will be green light bouncing back and giving your skin tone an unflattering look. This same concept is true regarding the clothing you wear, the couch in your room or even the desk beneath you. Being aware of your surroundings and how your lights are bouncing off them will help you eliminate any unflattering light spilling into your image.
