Learn the foundation of weather observing and meteorology: sun-driven heating, pressure gradients, fronts, stability, and how models, satellites, radar, and National Weather Service guidance shape forecasts.
Please note that the JO 7900.5D has been now replaced by the JO 7900.5E (with Change 1).
Please note that there is an error on Quiz question 2. Hawaiian standard time is UTC-10. The correct answer is 1500L
Explore how to assess and report aviation visibility, including prevailing and sector visibility, surface and tower visibility, runway visual range, and obscurations from haze, fog, and mist.
Master reading and encoding temperature, dew point, and sea level pressure, and set altimeter settings in inches of mercury; understand dew point as moisture and why relative humidity isn’t reported.
Master the remarks section of weather observations by learning mandatory vs optional remarks, proper order, and plain-language encoding, including timing, directions clockwise, and sensor vs observer checks.
We are excited to introduce an in-depth, 8-hour+ course on Aviation Weather Observing taught by an experienced aviation meteorologist and Certified Consulting Meteorologist.
We didn't cut corners in the development of this course- you'll learn here! This course is specifically aimed at those who want a deeper understanding of how weather fits into the aviation industry and exactly how to observe the current weather conditions and encode them into meteorological aerodrome reports (METARs).
Following successful completion of this class, each student may move forward with pursing a career with the FAA (or contractor) observing weather at commercial airports - with average [USA] pay ranging from $12/hr to over $40/hr. Of course, you'll have to meet their requirements and pass their test - we have no control over that, and have no affiliation with them. However, we recently learned that one of our US students successfully landed a job in weather observing after taking our course.
This course has been taken by students on every continent and has a well-established high rating. It is simply one of the best courses that you can take to further your skillset in meteorology, and is applicable around the globe (although every nation has its own set of encoding rules). Or, you can simply just take to course to better understand the weather in your backyard. We look forward to having you!
