Watercolour painting basics | Checklist
1. Paper - 300 GSM paper | Hot pressed OR handmade - I strongly recommend using watercolour pads when you are starting. Watercolour is a challenging medium and you must practice regularly in order to make progress. Disappointment will be your constant companion through this journey. A watercolour pad can ensure a constant supply of paper for marathon practices while keeping it light on your pocket. Paper size for this painting - A3.
2. Water - Running Water (At least 2 litre) - Taking less quantity of water can make it muddy and affect your hues and tones
3. Palette - Invest in a good palette with lots of mixing space
4. Watercolour Tubes - Always buy artist-quality watercolour tubes. To begin with, have these basic hues - Cobalt Blue, Lemon Yellow, Scarlet Lake, Payne's Grey, and Chinese White. You can practically create any other hue with these colours. We will explore colour theory in depth in our next courses.
5. Brushes - For this painting, stick to a round brush and a flat brush (Sizes mentioned in the video). As a thumb rule, use slightly larger brushes as they help produce big, bold shapes creating the much-needed looseness in watercolour paintings. To begin with, synthetic brushes are recommended. You can transition to squirrel hair brushes as you progress.
6. Masking Tape: 1 inch OR 2 inch
7. A watercolour pad to stick the paper on
8. Tissue Paper
Drawing is an irreplaceable element of any visual art form, be it any medium - watercolour, acrylic or oil.
Initially, our hands tend to be rigid as we try to replicate the OBJECTS we see.
But as we practice more, OBJECTS become insignificant and SHAPES start gaining attention.
With more practice, our hand starts to loosen up, enabling us to create bold and loose sketches.
Recommended: Use a 6B pencil and carry a sketchbook wherever you go. Look around, observe, and keep sketching at the airport, at the bus stand, and even while sipping coffee in a restaurant.
Paper: 300 GSM paper.
Tape: 1 inch Cello Tape (Suggested Tape: Masking Tape)
Tones are undoubtedly among the most foundational elements of painting.
In this video, you will learn:
What are tones in watercolour painting
Simple ways to create different tones in watercolour painting
How to create light tone, mid-tone and dark tone in watercolour painting
Always Remember:
Objects that are near, have darker tones. Objects that are father, have lighter tones.

How about you trying your hand at painting this?
I am sharing a photograph. It is an open-source image from Pixabay. I have also attached a quick painting that I made using this photograph as the reference picture.
How about you trying your hand at painting this?
Tip: Paint using only the big, flat brush and no round brush.
Here, I want to introduce you to a concept called Economy Of Strokes. A painting is created in an artist's mind. The hands and the technique just help translate that on the paper.
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
I want you to keep looking at the reference photo and visualise and imagine how you want your painting to look. It is simpler than you may think. Just close your eyes and try to visualise!
Follow this simple process -
1. Simplify the shapes. A triangle, a square, a rectangle, one random shape here and there and hey, you are set.
2. Decide which side the light is coming from
3. Draw a rough sketch on a palm-size paper with these two points (1,2) in mind.
4. It's your painting! Feel free to make changes. Omit some unwanted shapes, OR elements from the photograph. Feel free to rearrange the shapes. Maybe, add a human figure. Be free, be bold.
5. Economy of Strokes: Now, ask yourself this simple question - How can I complete this painting with the least number of strokes? Can the sky be done in 1 stroke? Can I complete the shadows under the roof in one or two strokes? How about painting the road in just one quick swipe of the brush? It will take time, but persevere, and this practice will help you master your strokes and bring a sense of urgency to your paintings.
6. It is this urgency that will create mesmerising results. Try this. And don't forget to send me your painting. I'll definitely revert with suggestions.

My Watercolour Journey | Who am I?
I am Pranav Kulkarni. I am a Mechanical Engineer by qualification and a journalist by profession. As a child, I always loved watercolour but it was only in 2007, when I was in my first job that I actually picked up the brush and started painting.
It was a difficult path in the beginning. Repeated failures often pushed me to give up painting. But what kept me going was my love for watercolour and more importantly, the boost given by small milestones that I achieved while overcoming my fears.
Today, I can confidently say that watercolour is my best companion and continues to stand with me, making my tough times easier and enriching my happy times.
Why watercolour? Why everyone needs a hobby, especially in today's times?
In these digital times, when moments of solace are few, I believe that watercolour, or for that matter, any art form is the path to unadulterated happiness. It is an activity that makes you forget the noise around you and brings time to a standstill. I experienced it 15 years ago, and continue to experience it even today. It just never gets monotonous. It never gets boring!
And it is this unadulterated happiness that I want to multiply by sharing it with everyone! I want everyone around me to fall in love with watercolours! They have given me a lot and I am committed to reciprocating and spreading the magic of watercolours to everyone who intends to add this happiness to their lives. Join me today, and I assure you that we will together pursue this journey and add colour and happiness to your lives.
Happy Painting,
Pranav
