Watercolor Materials and Preparing Your Watercolor Paper

Material List and Where to Purchase - PDF Included "Downloadable Resources". You will see it on the left hand side of the video when it's playing.

In this section we will cover all the basic materials needed to complete this scene. We will also go over how to prep your watercolor Paper.

Materials Needed for this Watercolor Course

In this Demo I use Ultramarine Blue, Lemon Yellow, Sap Green, Veridian Green, Raw Umber, Alizarin Crimson, and White Gouache.

  • Best option for watercolor Paper  Arches Brand but any will do. (5x7") is recommend for beginners but feel free to go larger!

  • Optional: Mat and Frame (Sized to fit your painting)

  • Backer Board or something to tape down the paper onto (cardboard is fine)

  • Blue painters tape or masking tape

  • Black Sharpie for signing work (or paints)

  • Small detail brush (Size 0 or 1) Nylon will hold less paint to create smaller dots/details.

  • Oval Wash Brush

  • Mixing Tray

  • 2 Small Containers for Water (One to rinse and one for clean)

  • Paper Towels

  • Chinese White (in watercolor palette can be used in place of gouache {harder to achieve results} but you must use very little water to achieve this since it is not an opaque paint).

  • PLEASE NOTE  you may, chose to create a different sized painting or use other colors in place of the materials that I use. Please keep in mind that when you do this, especially with larger paintings, you may need more inks and blending solution or other items than what I use in the demos.

I find that most high end Art supplies stores have all the supplies needed. I try to keep the amount of items and materials limited while giving a bit of variety to the design and openness for expression.

Let's work on a practice session with a wet in wet demo. By the end of this process you will feel more comfortable mixing your colors directly on the paper and learn to create a smooth transition of colors and create clouds in your sky without over working.

You will learn to create a wet in wet  sky and clouds background for your painting. We will work fast and mix colors on the paper. We will be working quickly before the paint dries. Make sure you are comfortable with the practice session before moving onto the original painting.

Practice Session- Wet in Wet Sky and clouds to create a Watercolor Background

Preparing to add your first layer of wash for your ocean or lake (depending on how you see it). We will start with a lighter shade and later provide more details and depth to your painting. Then we will add the first layer of a beautiful Lime Green shade (and learn to mix the color) to create a layer of trees in the background.

Creating the First Layer for your Water
+ First layer in your Birch Tree Gouache and adding Second layer of color
5 lectures 13:07

In this lecture we discuss White Gouache and paint in the Birch Tree to create a base for our Bark and then we will add many layers on top to create some texture in the Bark to make it look more realistic.

Creating Birch Tree Bark with Gouache by laying down an initial wash

Here we will be adding a second deeper shade layer to the trees across the water. We will continue to add more details later. I recommend creating a simple color wheel to practice making your different shades of color. I"ll add a sample link in the resources that you can follow to create your own.

Adding more shades to create depth in the Trees

We are continuing to add more depth and finer details to our background trees. Learning to add layers of shadow.

Using a third shade of green and creating more details in your background trees

Now that you have your mixing greens almost down, let's add more shades to our Grass area. Once that is complete I'll show you how to create some random leaves using a light shade of yellow and lime.

Let's begin adding more layers to our Grass and begin adding leaves

In this section you will learn to create tall grass using the tip of your brush to create fine lines. We will also add more layers of color to your leaves.

Practice Session - Creating Birch Tree Bark

Now that you have practiced on your scrap paper let's begin on your painting. We will be adding more layer to this.

Creating the Birch Tree Bark on your painting

Now that the first layers are down we can begin adding more details to the water. We'll start by adding some white gouache to give the appearance of sun shining on the water and giving it some reflections.

Let's begin adding details to our water by adding some more layers of color

Now that we have the first layers in the bark down we will begin to add some more finer details to our tree, creating a more defined tree.

Adding more layers to the Bark

We will be finishing up our darkest shade of green and then more onto our final touches.
