Swatching is a crucial part of watercolor painting as it helps you to understand the behavior of different watercolor paints and to choose the right color for your painting. Here are some tips and tricks for successful swatching:
(here are some extra tips)
Choose a swatch book or create your own: You can use a commercial swatch book or make your own by taping paper into a cardboard or notebook.
Use high-quality paper: Choose a heavy-weight, acid-free watercolor paper that will not buckle or wrinkle when wet.
Label your swatches: Label each swatch with the color name, brand, and date. This information will be helpful when you are trying to replicate a color in the future.
Test the transparency of the paint: Swatch each color by applying a small amount of paint to your paper, then add more water to see how transparent or opaque the paint is.
Test the staining power of the paint: Apply paint to your paper, then try to remove it by lifting it with a damp brush. Staining paints will leave a residue even after being lifted, while non-staining paints will be easy to remove.
Test the granulation of the paint: Apply paint to your paper and let it dry. Granulating paints will form textured patterns on the paper, while non-granulating paints will dry flat.
Test the mixing capabilities of the paint: Mix two or more colors on your swatch book to see how they interact and what new colors they produce.
By following these tips and tricks, you can create a comprehensive swatch book that will be a valuable reference tool as you develop your watercolor painting skills.
