Course content

1 section8 lectures1h 0m total length
  • An introduction to the course - start here5:21

Find out how the course works and how to get the best out of it. I suggest taking one project (lecture) a week, having a go at the demonstration and then practicing the techniques with other pictures. And above all, be confident in yourself and have fun!

  • Colour Harmony : hold a painting together with a wash7:02

Here we are having a go at painting in the style of Frank Webb, using a background wash to provide color harmony. We will also be using a flat brush to get nice straight edges and crisp corners, and working in three stages from a pale background, through mid-tones and finally to darks (plus a bit of tidying up at the end).

  • Absolute minimalism : cut out all but the bare essentials7:14

This winter scene based on a painting by Edward Seago is quick and fun to paint, but you need to just let go and let it happen. Here is where the fewest brushstrokes can make the best paintings.

  • A Box of Tricks: use every tool at your disposal8:15

Painting details and textures does not have to be tie consuming or difficult. In this project you will learn how to create textures fast and loose.

  • Big Shapes-Small Details : paint the big shapes first, then add details8:24

This project in the style of Claude Croney shows how an impressive picture can be painted with bold shapes followed by just a few details.

  • Fast Foliage : create distinctive foliage with just a few marks8:34

We will paint a woodland scene in the style of Jack Merriott who managed to depict a variety of recognisable plants with just a few strokes of the brush. Woodland scenes can be complicated, but you will find out just how easy they are to paint if you follow his method.

  • Strong Contrasts : place dark against light for powerful pictures7:32

Tony Couch was a master of using darks against lights to give punch to a painting. in this painting of a barn on a snowy hillside we can practice this technique and learn how to create pictures that really capture the attention.

  • Make the Ordinary Extraordinary : transform any scene into a spectacular painti8:15

In this quick painting you will use all the skills you have developed so far - economy of brushwork, speed of painting, drawing with a brush over a few pencil guidelines, and hopefully a new found enjoyment in painting fast and loose!

Requirements

  • You will need some watercolor paper (15" x 22" is a good size), a large and a small round brush, a flat brush and a rigger. You will also need a small selection of paints: ultramarine blue, cerulean blue, yellow ochre, burnt sienna, alizarin crimson, cadmium red and cadmium yellow.

Description

In this unique 7 part course I'll teach you how to paint in a fast, loose and free style. Each part of the course is based on the style and methods of a particular master of watercolor impressionism. From these great artists you will learn how to paint in a way that is free, fast and full of expression and passion. The course will be most suitable for those who already paint in watercolors but is really for anyone who just wants to loosen up. The lessons are not difficult, so even beginners will be able to follow along.

  • The 7 parts of the course look at the work of

  • Claude Croney,
  • Jack Merriott,
  • Tony Couch, and
  • Edward Wesson.

I suggest you take the course one step at a time, and so build up your skills. With each lecture there is an audio introduction which will help you to get started. Then download the pdf pages that show you step by step what to do, and also give you more ideas and information. Finally watch the video of me painting the project, and then have a go yourself.

I suggest you take a project a week, so that once you have painted the set piece you can spend some time practicing the techniques before moving on to the next project.
