Hello and welcome to my Graphite Watercolour Course! In this course you'll find 6 subjects that you can learn to draw and shade with graphite pencils then wet them like you would watercolour pencils! My first love was watercolour so using these pencils is a fantastic experience.
To remove the need for free-hand drawing, each subject has a feint outline drawing that you can print off. We'll go over the outline, draw the details then shade the picture with various shades of graphite. Next we'll grab a brush and go over the picture with a little water :D
The 6 subjects are as follows. Here are the subjects:
1. Cabin
2. Wheelbarrow
3. Drill Monkey (graphite only - no wash)
4. Medway Queen
5. Hopalong Cassidy (graphite only - no wash)
6. Lady with the Red Hat
For the Drill Monkey and Hopalong Cassidy we do not wet the pictures as I feel the effects we achieve look great without, however can wet your picture if you like :o)
You'll notice that we apply a tiny touch of colour to two of the pictures (a bit of red in the Drill Monkey and Red Hat), for this I used Albrecht Durer Watercolour pencils (made by Faber-Castell). You can use any other brand of colouring pencil, these are just my favourite.
Note: if you're going to wet the picture then make sure they're watercolour colouring pencils ;)
Graphite Pencils I Use
The pencils I use and recommend are the Aquarelle Faber-Castell Graphite Set. There's 5 tones in the pack:
HB
2B
4B
6B
8B
I feel this is plenty for achieving the effects I desire and so it makes this set very affordable to pick up. They can be found all over the internet and also on our own store. These pencils are also designed to be used with water. You do not have to use the set I use, but do make sure the graphite pencils you use are water-soluble if you are going to wet the picture.
I would recommend using a smooth watercolour paper, around 300gsm thickness. We sell a good quality smooth watercolour paper on our own store if you are unable to find some locally.
The brush I use is a No.6 Sable Brush. This is only a recommendation, I like it because to you get it to a fine point but can also wet large areas too.
So to clarify this is what you'll get with each subject:
1. Feint Outline Drawing (to go over - if you want to trace or draw the subject free hand please do! We have a free hand drawing course using a grid system I developed also on Udemy). If you do trace the drawing we recommend using a Tracedown Graphite Carbon so that the lines can be erased if you make a mistake :-)
2. My finished picture to use as reference
3. Video lessons on how to complete the picture
Please see the resources section of Part 1 in each subject to get the outlines and reference photos.
Enjoy!

Please read our introduction lecture first to see a break down of the materials. As mentioned in the introduction I chose not to wet this picture and keep it as pure graphite. This was just my personal preference and I feel it shows just how good these graphite pencils can be.
To download the outline drawing please see the resources section of this lecture.
