Description
The goal of this course is to train participants on the overview of the criminal justice system, including recent reforms. Although it is aimed at violence peer counselors, this course is suitable for anyone who provides peer support services and/or works with young adults. The information covered in this course include:
- Juvenile Justice System in California
- Diversion and Recidivism
- Recent Criminal Justice Reforms in California
- Diversion from Incarceration
Through this course of 5 lectures, over 35 minutes of video content, informational handouts and 1 quiz, participants will have a better understanding of the criminal justice system and recent reforms in legislature, be able to define diversion and recidivism and understand how reducing recidivism is a component of peer counseling with survivors of violence, and have an introduction to the Juvenile Justice System through a case study focusing on opportunities for diversion.
As peer counselors or anyone who provides peer support services, it is important to have an understanding of the Criminal & Juvenile Justice Systems. Understanding the system will enable better service to the community and clients. Thus this course will greatly benefit those in this field of work.

Youth Alive! is a violence prevention and intervention organization that helps young people become leaders and advocates for the change they would like to see in their communities. We also mentor and support healing for young people who have been violently injured, and work with families grieving in the wake of a homicide.
