What you'll learn

  • Master the "Golden Rule" of hardware loop avoidance to ensure zero-loop redundancy.
  • Architect high-availability fabrics using both Single-Sided and Double-Sided vPC topologies.
  • Navigate ASIC-specific behaviors across Nexus 7000 and 9000 platforms to avoid performance bottlenecks.
  • Synchronize the Control Plane effectively using CFS (Cisco Fabric Services) and Peer-Link best practices.
  • Solve the "Split-Brain" crisis by mastering Peer-Keepalive logic and the "Sticky Bit" role selection.
  • Integrate Layer 3 flawlessly by implementing Peer-Gateway and handling routing over vPC without blackholes.
  • Eliminate Spanning Tree limitations while maintaining a safe, loop-free failover environment.
  • Optimize Data Center Interconnects (DCI) using professional-grade BPDU filtering and PortFast strategies.
  • Manage "Orphan Ports" and single-attached devices to maintain 100% connectivity during failures.
  • Troubleshoot with confidence by understanding Type-1 and Type-2 consistency checks and failure matrices.

DO NOT IMPORT THE LAB FILE IN EVE-NG! This is meant to be used on PNETLab.

If you accidentally imported the file in EVE-NG, you will need to run restore-db command to fix your environment.

Requirements

  • CCNA-Level Networking Knowledge: Students should be comfortable with basic switching concepts, including VLANs, Trunking (802.1Q), and standard EtherChannel (LACP) operations.
  • Familiarity with Spanning Tree Protocol (STP): A solid understanding of STP states (Blocking, Forwarding) and Root Bridge selection is vital, as the course covers how vPC interacts with and overrides traditional STP.
  • Basic Cisco NX-OS Exposure: While not mandatory, familiarity with the Nexus CLI (which differs slightly from IOS) will help students follow the configuration examples more fluidly.
  • Understanding of Layer 3 Fundamentals: Since the course dives into HSRP/VRRP and "Routing over vPC," students should understand basic routing concepts and Default Gateway redundancy.
  • Simulation Environment: Access to EVE-NG, GNS3, or Cisco Modeling Labs (CML).
  • Nexus Images: Use of NX-OSv 9000v (Titanium) or N9K-9300v images is recommended to test the vPC features discussed.
  • System Resources: At least 128GB of RAM is suggested if the student intends to run a dual-nexus lab environment simultaneously with the videos.

Description

Cisco Nexus vPC (Virtual Port Channel) is the cornerstone of modern Layer 2 data center design, yet it remains one of the most misunderstood technologies in the industry. This comprehensive 5-hour masterclass is designed to take you from a basic understanding to expert-level mastery of vPC architecture on Cisco Nexus 7000 and 9000 platforms.

Why this course? Most tutorials cover simple "Single-Sided" vPC. This course goes much deeper, exploring the hardware "Golden Rule" of loop avoidance and the specific ASIC differences between M-Series, F-Series, and Cloud Scale modules that dictate your fabric’s performance and limits.

What You Will Learn:

  • The Architecture of Resiliency: Understand the interplay between the Peer-Link, Peer-Keepalive, and Cisco Fabric Services (CFS) for perfect control-plane synchronization.

  • Advanced Deployment Scenarios: Master Double-Sided vPC, Multilayer designs, and Data Center Interconnect (DCI) strategies using BPDU filtering and PortFast Edge.

  • The Layer 3 Integration Trap: Solve the "routing over vPC" challenge with Peer-Gateway and the layer3 peer-router command, ensuring seamless OSPF/BGP adjacencies.

  • High Availability & Failover: Learn how the "Sticky Bit" and Role Priority work during real-world failures to prevent "Split-Brain" (Dual-Active) catastrophes and traffic blackholes.

  • Best Practices & Optimization: Implement HSRP/VRRP Active-Active forwarding, Bridge Assurance, and professional configuration workflows used in the world's most robust data centers.
