Join me as we begin working together to develop a vital skill, that you might be surprised to know, you already have.
We'll outline the Objectives and Outcomes for using the skill of Visual Communication which has a capacity like no other to help you collaborate, connect with, and convince customers by communicating ideas simply, quickly, and memorably.
You'll explore just how it has the distinct capacity to make complex concepts and solutions simpler, in a unique, honest and authentic way.
Together we'll explore
Just how a hand-drawn sketch puts across a sense of authenticity and a personal touch that an AI generated image might always lack.
Why that's significant, particularly in a crowded marketplace, where a positive way to stand out from the competition, however seemingly small, is an advantage.
How hand-drawn sketches have the power to communicate a sense of transparency and honesty on the part of the person drawing them. Especially when you draw live and your client can see the process of how your sketch was created right in front of them.
How hand-drawn sketches can help you connect even more strongly on a human level than without them.
We'll review the two questions from the last lecture, and get into our first Exercise together - How to Make Tea!
Exercise:
Grab your pen and paper – you only need one of each as a minimum.
Draw how to make tea! (I mean that hot beverage that many of us drink at various times of the day.)
Please avoid writing any explanatory words down (but you can title your work if you wish.)
Please be ready to explain to someone who has never made tea before, how to make tea.
I encourage you to take no longer than 10-12 minutes before the next session.
Watch as I tackle the brief myself and invite you to reflect on the experience yourself.
Was your sketch simple?
Was it Complex?
Did it have people? Or no people?
Was it really technical?
Were there similarities and differences from what I sketched?
Was that hard to do? If so, what specifically was difficult about it?
Having sketched your making tea visual, what One Thing would you change? Why?
And, what outcome or improvement would you expect that change to make?
In this lecture you'll understand even more about:
What exactly is a Hand-drawn Visual?
What’s Visual Communication?
What are the factors that require careful consideration for effective Visual Communication?
What is Visual Communication’s place in business for you as a Sales Engineer?
Exactly why "it packs a punch".
How applying the skills of Visual Communication as a Sales Engineering Individual has the potential to help you become even more successful than you already are.
Grow your confidence to come up with new, creative ideas and solutions.
Discover how Sketching can be a powerful tool for problem-solving.
Learn how the belief that you can't draw just makes it even more difficult to solve problems or find new opportunities in a sales cycle.
See how sketching out different options and scenarios, can help to visualise how technology can be used
to solve specific problems or meet specific needs.
Practice the building blocks of shapes and squiggles; the basic visual elements are all that is needed to sketch anything!
Discover why “it is because I said it is” just a commentary on the very real power of suggestion when using hand drawn visuals to communicate.
Here you'll learn to:
Understand how the ability to explain complex ideas or concepts in a clear and concise manner is a critical skill in Sales Engineering.
Explore how to break down complex ideas into simpler, more digestible parts, allows your audience to follow your train of thought and see the value in what you're proposing.
Convey complex ideas more effectively than words alone, and use analogies or metaphors to help make abstract concepts more concrete and relatable.
Together we'll:
Understand the various factors that can make it more challenging to succeed in your Hand-Drawn sketching.
Learn about my personal experiences using this skill that encouraged my client to have an even more open dialogue with me and gave a distinct advantage over the competition that allowed me to really focus in
on the most important value propositions to demonstrate against.
Explore several factors I've found can make hand-drawing sketches simpler to succeed with.
In this lecture you'll build on what I've covered, with particular focus on:
Learning how to overcome the number one barrier to drawing in my experience - People & emotions.
Discovering that when a sketch with people is simple, people tend to see themselves and so it’s more relatable.
Exploring how Colours can be a powerful tool in:
conveying ideas and concepts,
adding additional layers of meaning
and evoking emotions and associations in your audience.
Seeing how certain colours can be used to convey different ideas and concepts.
Finding out just how easy it is to bring depth to your 2D sketches.
In this lecture you'll deep dive into:
Resources that can help you communicate your ideas and concepts better and more effectively through visual language.
7 sure fire and simple ways I’ve learned to Engage the Eye of my audience!
The 5W's and 1H (Who, What, When, Where, Why, and How) as anchors for visually communicating information effectively and to ensure you don’t miss anything vital in what you capture with your clients.
The power of the simplicity of the "Problem, Innovation, Result" structure as an effective way to explain how the application of products, ideas, and people can lead to improvement.
Together we'll zoom in on:
More example Business oriented visuals that you might practice and incorporate into your sketches going forward.
A lesson learned (for me the hard way) on Framing.
A wider lesson on planning what to draw in advance.
Visualising a Future state, the innovative actions as a to do list, and the barriers to overcome as a structure with value in several different scenarios.
A roadmap as a visual representation of a plan or strategy outlining the steps required to reach a particular destination.
How to effectively visually communicate vision and strategy to encourage stakeholders to follow them and support your customers strategic goals.
As we begin our last section, I invite you you to reflect on everything I’ve covered.
You're invited:
To think of a real or example engagement,
the message and the key elements you want to communicate.
To plan it out roughly,
and then Sketch it
with Colour & Shade.
I'll sketch with you, so you can watch what I do in the next lecture as I depict a story structure known as "Rebirth"
I'll reflect on my Visual Communication for "Rebirth" we reflect on just how Visual communication is a remarkable tool that's both unusual and unexpected, not to mention, a lot of fun!
Join me here as we explore together how:
Customers crave clear ideas, presented through pictures with as few words as possible.
Pictures have the power to sell solutions, and ideas are no different; they also need visual representation to be truly impactful.
The best ideas are those that are co-created together with customers.
This approach mimics the value of the relationship between two parents and their child; both are responsible for the success of the idea.
As we exit this Lecture, you'll be much closer to taking a visual journey together with your clients and watch as your ideas come to life in new, exciting, and differentiated ways.
