Be sure to download the Visio keyboard shortcuts for quick reference as we go along.
The lessons, clicksteps, and features shown in this course will work no matter if you're learning on Visio 2013, Visio 2016, or Visio 365. That's because they're essentially the same thing - the desktop install of Visio.
In fact, the most recent Office 365 naming convention calls them Visio Online 1. And Visio Online 2. I know.
The good news is that the features are the same. If you have any questions, please post them to the discussions section. And have fun learning Visio!
Keyboard shortcuts help you quickly navigate your drawings. The more complex the drawings, the more valuable this info will be. (NOTE: a reference to Section 12 is now Section 13... I've added a dedicated section on Visio connectors.)
Learn the behavior of the Dynamic grid and how it affects the positioning of shapes.
If you want to start with the exact file I'm using here, I've attached the .vsdx file as a .zip (Udemy doesn't allow the upload of .vsdx files).
As a final note, a student mentioned a known issue with the Dynamic Grid, which is that is might not work over a Remote Desktop (RDP) session. If applicable, you can read more here, including info about a possible workaround.

Master precise Visio shape placement with the ruler and horizontal and vertical guides, gluing shapes to guides for accurate alignment, and set page setup to letter size in landscape.
Master Visio shape selection by using area select, control-click for multiple items, and lasso and home tab tools to precisely move and duplicate selected objects.
Use the Visio line tool to connect shapes via glue points and connection points, ensuring lines stay attached when objects move; delete lines when needed.
Learn to add pictures to Visio diagrams via the insert tab, where pictures become shapes, adjust brightness, crop, and layer; then swap shapes to quickly change a diagram's look.
Group shapes in Visio to move as a unit in a flowchart and swim lane diagram, then ungroup to edit individual shapes and apply different styles.
Learn to add and customize text boxes in Microsoft Visio by inserting vertical or horizontal text boxes, editing text with F2, and styling with shape options.
Master Visio shortcuts to save time on the drawing canvas: tab to select shapes, enter/escape to edit text, ctrl-shift < or > to resize, ctrl-G to group, ctrl+scroll to zoom.
Use synthesis to combine previously learned Visio skills by grouping multiple text blocks on a shape, then manage grouped objects and ungrouping cautions to build flexible diagrams.
Also posted to the LAB YouTube channel, these next few lessons help master connectors, which will be used in virtually all your diagrams. Enjoy, and please subscribe for lots more tips and tricks covering the apps you use most. Here's the link:

Learn to configure Visio glue and reroute settings, including glue to shape, disabling glue, and controlling routing around or through connectors for precise diagrams.
Learn to add multiple labels to a single Visio connector using a UML class shape hack and an association connector. Maintain dynamic, glued labels as you move diagrams.
Explore a Visio workaround to create a forked connector using an intermediary empty shape and a single connector to two shapes, maintaining layout when moved.
Add a screen tip to a shape to display text on hover. Select the shape, go to the insert tab, choose screen tip, enter text, and click ok.
Master AutoConnect in Microsoft Visio to quickly build diagrams, create dynamic or static connections, and leverage the quick connect mini toolbar for faster diagramming.
You were introduced to this earlier in Lesson 11; this covers the topic in a bit more detail.
Organize a Visio diagram by creating and managing layers, assigning shapes to layers, and configuring layer properties such as visible, active, lock, snap and glue, and color overrides.
Lock a layer to prevent moving or selecting objects, turning it read-only, and use layer locking to keep a background picture fixed while arranging top-layer objects in a Visio diagram.
Delete a layer while keeping the layer available, since layers are page-specific; add, remove, or clean unreferenced layers, and use select by type to manage and style layered objects.
Understand how Visio displays the quick styles gallery: select a shape to enable quick styles, and collapse the window to reveal or hide the gallery depending on desktop real estate.
Add text to flowchart shapes in Visio, adjust auto-zoom settings to fit fonts, then drag shapes and use auto connect to refine the process layout.
Learn to enhance org charts in Visio by adding and editing single or multiple pictures, cropping and formatting with picture tools, and ensuring image-name matching for automatic import.
Update org chart data using three methods: manual editing of names, titles, and pictures; drag-and-drop to add sub items; and importing data from Excel or Exchange server sources.
Add and view shape data in Visio, using string, number, lists, duration, date, currency, and boolean fields to describe attributes, and access the shape data dialog from the right-click menu.
Explore how auto size behavior in Visio, on by default, expands your drawing to multiple pages and affects print output, with options to toggle off and change page sizes.
Create and apply a background page as a watermark or border, linked to a foreground page via page setup, with changes affecting all pages in a multi-page diagram.
Explore how to manage backgrounds in Visio by selecting, applying, and removing backgrounds, borders, and titles from the design tab, and combine elements via the page setup.
Link Visio diagrams to external data by using the data tab to connect shapes with an Excel workbook, then drag rows onto shapes to establish live links.
Configure automatic refresh every 20 minutes via the External Data window's Configure Refresh, using a unique identifier and overwrite of user changes, with the diagram open.
Visio shape reports extract data from diagrams like org charts to tally departments and staff, with outputs to Excel, HTML, XML, or Visio shapes.
Explore spacing and alignment in Visio using the dynamic grid and align options to position shapes, with anchor shapes guiding alignment and live previews.
Distribute shapes horizontally and vertically to align them, select anchor shapes, and manage z-space by bringing objects forward or backward during diagram arrangement.
Use auto align and space in Visio to evenly space and straighten connectors, preview results by hovering, and customize horizontal and vertical spacing before applying.
Learn to create and manage connection points in Visio, switching between static and dynamic glue, and precisely place points with the connection point tool.
Explore how Visio themes instantly transform the look and feel of diagrams and shapes with colors and fonts, variations, quick styles, and live preview across stencils.
Customize Visio themes by creating new theme colors and text colors in the variant dialog, previewing changes, and applying the theme to shapes or all pages.
Explore Visio theme options, including organic themes with radiance effects, adjustable connectors, and embellishment levels, and learn to apply themes to single or multiple pages.
Create a shape container in Visio and compare it with a group to see visual boundaries and headings. Learn how containers resize independently and how text attaches to headings.
Open the container tools tab to style and manage contents. Learn to select contents, move items, and populate containers by dragging shapes within the green boundary.
Learn to add a shape callout in Visio by attaching text with the callouts stencil, using mid box callout and connection points, and note the drawbacks of the old method.
Learn how to insert and resize Visio callouts using the callout gallery and live preview, so balloons resize with text and stay attached to shapes.
Edit and manage hyperlinks in visio by adding a second hyperlink to a shape, customizing descriptions, and using control-click to access a popup menu for multiple destinations.
Use Visio's find and replace commands to locate and swap diagram text efficiently. Learn settings like search scope, match case, whole words, and wild card searches for replacing words.
Learn to group flowchart elements into a subprocess in Visio by selecting items, using the process tab to create a subprocess, and linking pages for a cleaner BPMN diagram.
