Welcome to the course. In this video we discuss the advantages of using Premier Pro. We also break down the structure of this course into sections and discuss what we will focus on in each section.
You will also learn a bit about the instructor.
When ever you are about to embark on any learning journey you need to pack the right gear and prepare yourself to successfully reach your destination. We start by getting our workspace clean and clear of any distractions. Having a physically clean workspace will greatly impact the clarity of which your mind can focus on the lessons and grasp them quicker.
We then look at building a structured folder system template that we can use for all future projects. By building a structured folder system we help you stay organised and make your operations more professional as you will know where everything is when you need it and can share the video projects with anyone.
Next we take a look at storage options and different hard drives. Storage is essential when working with typically large video files. Choosing the right hard drive for the job will greatly improve your efficiency in editing and save you time.
When it comes to working with video files its important to know how to transfer them to the right location on your hard drive and make sure there is a back up.
We also discuss the difference in resolution and how to check that on each video file to know exactly what you are working with.
We take a look at opening Premier Pro for the very first time and creating a new project. We walk through the different options available when creating a new project and how to set them up right. Its important to make sure you adjust the settings to get the best optimised performance from whatever computer you may be working from.
Premier Pro can seem a bit daunting at first when you open it but in this lesson we break it down into panels and sections. Once you become familiar with the different panels and windows available to you its easy to navigate your way around and remove the panels that are not necessary at the moment.
I can't recall how many frustrating times I have lots all my work and progress due to that unforeseeable Premier Pro crash. At some point during you editing process you will experience a sudden and unexpected crash due to the intensive workload getting the better of your computer.
Thats where the Auto-save feature comes in to save the day, literally. We look at adjusting our auto-save settings to make sure our project is automatically backed-up on a regular time basis. It is also good practice to save manually with the occasional "Command + s" or "Ctrl + s".
We look at importing your footage and organising it into folders (called "bins" in Premier Pro). We also look at previewing our footage in either thumbnail or list views and reordering the footage based on their labels and names.
The Source Panel is where you will get a full preview of your clips and be able to select parts of the clip to be used in your edit. There are a range of tools that allow you to get precise selection down to the nearest frame. Here you are also able to seperate and select just the visual or audio of the clips to be using in you edit.
The Timeline is where your vision becomes reality as we look at layering and structuring our clips to start to form a story or message. We look at what the timeline is made up of and how the clips can be stacked on the different video and audio layers to create a flowing story or message.
The Program Panel is where you preview what the final video will look like. As the playhead runs through the timeline you will see a realtime preview of all the elements you have layered and structured on the timeline. We also take a brief look at the other tools available in the program panel that effect the output of the file and help your editing process run smoother.
Knowing what tools you have available and what they can do is essential in any line of work when it comes to becoming efficient and effective, especially in video editing which can be really time consuming. We take a look at the different tools and how they can manipulate the clips on the timeline to structure the video better.
I also strongly suggest that you just take the time to play around with the tools in your own time to get a better grasp on how exactly they can better enhance your editing experience.
You can really enhance your basic video editing by applying some simple video editing effects and transitions. You can use the search bar to locate your favourite effects and transitions and then simply drag and drop them over the clip to apply them.
We go through a couple of effects but there really are too many to cover in this course so I strongly suggest playing around with them all and getting a feel for the different effects and transitions and how that impacts your final edit.
We show you some basics of how to apply the "lumetri color" effect and adjust some colour settings. Colour grading is such a large topic that there are specific courses and roles just on this. This lesson just touches on the basics of colour manipulation correction to create a certain feel and how that impacts your final edit.
Titles can add a professional fell to your videos, especially titles that have a bit of animation and life in them. We look at creating titles in the old way of Premier Pro and also in the new form of Graphics which allow you more freedom and quicker title animations.
We also look at creating manual animations though the use of keyframes. Keyframes are what seperate an amateur video editing program to a professional video editing program as you are able to create your own custom animations and save them as a preset to be used in future projects.
Audio is often underestimated in amateur productions and edits. We talk about the power of audio and break it down into three fundamental components, Sound Effects, Music, & Dialogue. We go through each component and even give examples of these working in other movies.
A little homework would be to examine your favourite movies and listen for these elements and think about the way they have been used. What audio has been used and how does it effect what the audience is feeling?
Sound effects can really enhance the actions of what ever is on screen. They can bring fictional characters and beasts to life and help sell the effect of what the audience are seeing or hearing. Adding sound effects to your edits will make your videos more professional and entertaining.
We look at different sound effects and how we can add them to our video to subtly enhance the production quality.
There are a range of different dialogue you can have in a video. We look at some different examples of the inner and outer dialogue often used in movies.
We look at adding a voice over dialogue to our video to inform the audience of what the video is about. We then break the dialogue up into sections to fit the video so that the visual content and audio content complement one another.
Music is such an essential part to any video as it has the power to make or break a scene. Music that doesn't fit the scene or visuals on the screen will often result in miscommunication of the intended story or message.
We take a look at different genres of music and when applied how they change the overall theme of our video. Hunting for the right music can be time consuming but its such an important element to get right.
Audio mixing can be very technical and often is assigned as a sole role in video production. To keep things simple we go over the basics of Audio mixing and essentially look at adjusting the audio levels so that the sound effects, dialogue and music don't overpower each other.
We also look at a new Premier Pro feature called Auto-Ducking. This feature allows the automatic adjustments of volume of audio tracks. This is great for when you want music at a certain volume and then you want the music to duck away as the character is talking and then the music will turn back up automatically when the character has stopped talking.
Once your video is looking like it is complete you will want to export your project to a single video file. We look at the different export settings available to you and what the best general setting are to use for increased share ability.
We also look at export location and where to set that up in regards to your structured folder system.
Adobe Media Encoder comes packaged with Premier Pro and is great at encoding video and helping with the export process. We discuss how to use and navigate your way around Adobe Media Encoder.
If you have multiple projects that you want to export and keep working with Premier Pro at the same time then Adobe Media Encoder is the perfect tool.
Once your video has been exported it is important to double check that everything went according to plan. We show you some quick and easy ways to do this.
We take a look at some additional software and applications you can use to save a bit of time and money in the editing process.
Having a copy of the Keyboard shortcuts handy will help improve your use of Premier Pro and in time make you look like a pro as you won't need to even look up or navigate through long menus.
One click and it's done.
Thank you and congratulations on completing the course. I really do hope you got heaps out of the course.
