Starting your plants from seed has a number of advantages. You have a greater selection at a lower cost than buying seedlings. You can have healthier plants when YOU want them, rather than when the nursery or garden center thinks you should have them. In this lesson we'll have a quick overview of how this course is organized and what we'll be covering.
Seed packets provide a wealth of information to aid us in selecting and growing out our vegetables. This lecture will give an overview of what is to be found on the packets. Please note - not all packets will provide exactly the same information. Some may be more detailed than others, so it pays to do your own research when purchasing seeds.
This lesson will cover how to determine your first and last frost dates and the advantages of using a Planting Calendar when planning your garden. Your local garden club, nursery center or agricultural extension office are all good resources for this information as well.
Dave will show how he tests for seed germination. It's a great way to pre-sprout your seeds for potting and being sure your seedlings get a good start and that you have the number of plants you want to grow in your garden. We'll end the lecture by potting up some seeds Dave has already pre-germinated.
We'll end this Section with a quick overview of what we've covered so far.
Having everything ready before you start planting will help to ensure success. This lesson will cover the supplies and materials you should have on hand right from the beginning. Dave will cover what his best recommendations are and remember, much of your seed starting supplies can be reused year after year!
Now that we've gathered our supplies it's time to actually plant the vegetable seeds we want to grow for the garden. In this, Part One of two lectures, Dave will demonstrate how to set up and get started with planting those seeds.
This lecture is a continuation of Lecture 7. Dave will talk about the importance of heat and light in germinating your seeds.
It's easy to forget to water your seeds and sometimes you can accidentally overwater. In this lecture Dave will cover how to build your own self-watering tray for your seedlings, ensuring they get the right amount of water as they need it - and save you from the daily chore of watering.
We'll review what we've covered in this Section.
Dave will explain what to be aware of when you're getting ready to move your new seedlings out into the world.
This is the big moment! Your seedlings are ready to be planted in the garden. Dave will demonstrate his method for lifting the plants from their pots and moving them into the garden.
There is a lot of controversy about the use of peat in gardening. Dave will provide a brief discussion on the pros and cons of peat moss, but if you'd like to dig a bit deeper then follow the link I've provided in the Resources for this lecture.
Coconut coir has been presented as an environmentally friendly alternative to peat moss, but is it really that much better? Dave will talk about the pros and cons of using coir. If you haven't already read the article that I provided the link to in Lecture 13 you may want to jump back and visit that blog after you've finished Dave's lecture.
We've covered a lot of ground through this course and by now you should be comfortable with beginning your own seed starting adventure. This final lecture will offer a quick recap of what we've covered. As always, if you have any questions feel free to contact me - Dave and I want your own seed sprouting enterprise to be successful!
Growing your own vegetables from seed saves you money while offering a greater selection of plants to choose and cultivate. This course is for anyone who has ever wanted to grow their own garden from seed.
Starting with the basic knowledge of determining your first and last frost and freeze dates and creating a planting calendar this course will walk you through each step you need to know to master the art of growing your own vegetables for the garden.
We'll cover how to test for seed germination, what are the environmental factors that can affect germination including light and temperature requirements.
What are the best soilless mixes to use? We'll cover that too! We'll also show you how to build your own self-watering tray to give just the right amount of moisture to your seeds and seedlings.
Once the seeds have sprouted, we'll jump into proper transplanting methods, how to harden off your plants so they are ready to be placed in the garden.
While the Course will focus on the vegetable garden, these techniques can just as easily be used when starting herbs, flowers or any other crop from seed.
Dave and I are excited to have you join us!
