A bit at a time.
Please take your time working through this course and practice each bit of the body before you tackle the whole person, you might find it less overwhelming.
Nobody is looking at what you are doing.
If you have a daily commute on a train or bus (and you are not driving) that is a prefect time to sketch you fellow passengers. After all they will probably be looking out of the window, reading a book or more likely these days, looking at their phones. So they are not paying you any attention at all. So don't me shy and just do it.
Look at him in sections
Here I demonstrate how to look at a person and break it into sections.
Look at him in sections
Putting a sheet of glass over the photograph to draw on, I can show you how I divided him into sections.
Crawl first then walk then run.
Just as you did when you were a child, start in the simplest way and then gradually build it up.
Think about a block that is almost a rectangle.
Again, don't get bogged down in the detail, look at the body as a series of building blocks.
Keep it simple.
It does of course depend how far you want to go with your sketching? Are you just grabbing a quick pose then forget about fingers and thumbs, just get the shape and the angles and that will be sufficient to convey the image.
Image the body underneath the garment and use any folds in fabric to help you.
Something to start you off.
Here are a few things to get you started.
A few ideas.
Here are just a few things to add variety. Start making your own collection of accessories.
Group of people
Remember they will get smaller and have less detail the further away they get.
Extra resources from me to you as advised by the clever people at Udemy.
Enjoy your painting, thanks Nicola
NEW bonus lecture added August 2023
Learn some BASIC skills so you will no longer be overwhelmed by the thought of sketching people.
Especially if it relieves the stain of that boring meeting.
This is NOT a life drawing course.
No longer will you be overwhelmed by even the thought of putting people in your sketches or even your painting, because I have devised a fool proof method to help you create believable figures. Many people find that drawing people is a real stumbling block so I have created this course to show you how a few techniques can get you past this.
By working through my clear and easy to understand video demonstrations you will discover the secret of how to break down the construction of a person, one bit at a time, to the simplest elements and find it's not as difficult as you thought.
Each lecture will look at one part of the body at a time, this way the learning is in manageable chunks. Take your time and practice each step of the way. Then when your confidence has grown you will be able to create more figures of your own.
This is for those who want to add some feeling of activity and sense of event to there visual representation.

I also have years of experience of teaching people of all levels both in person and via the internet.
Do one of my courses and you will feel as if I am in the room with you every step of the way.
Enjoy your painting, love Nicola
